It looks like the pre-COVID trio I played in is defunct. The singer doesn’t believe in vaccinations and the other guitar player says his arthritis is so bad he’s not playing anymore. Today I posted this on a local musicians group on Facebook. Two female singers are interested. One of them has a husband who is a drummer. They also have a jam space. Hopefully some more people will show up. Myself with two singers and a drummer doesn’t sound like a band  Here is the ad: Looking to start a blues/rock band. Me: 67 years old, decent rhythm guitar player, basic lead guitar but it is not my thing, simple bass player (1 & 5), one handed keyboard player, terrible lead vocals, ok backup vocals. I have professional quality guitar and bass gear and a basic PA. I have a nice older Yamaha Clavinova piano but it is way to heavy to move around. In summer we can practice in my backyard. I love the blues but am OK with most genres. I can sight read but am slow at it. I try to write original material but I’m better at the music side than lyrics. I understand theory pretty well. You: guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, percussion, lead vocalist, horn, violin, woodwind, etc. You have your own gear. If you have original material even better. I like playing original songs. The important thing is you want have fun, jam, see how we fit musically, and possibly gig if it works out. Message me if you are interested. Age is not important to me. I’ll play with anyone who is compatible musically. |

I’ve jammed with a violin and trumpet before. You just have to let them do the lead parts. I prefer playing rhythm anyway so it would work. I like to lock in with the bass and drums to support the singer. That way I get to play all the time. Heck I'm a trumpet player myself. I'd bring my son to jam with you but I think you are probably too far away from us! I'm also a rhythm player with a pretty good grasp of theory too. I don't like to solo on guitar- just never really got an appetite for it. Although from what you described, I sense that you probably have been exposed to other genres than rock and blues if you are used to playing with brass and reeds... |

People I practiced with last night were a female singer who plays 12 string guitar and a female violinist. I used acoustic last night but will probably play electric out.

There are so many musicians that have been sitting at home idle for the past year that I'd expect you'll have to beat them back with a stick. It has made it very easy for me to get high quality subs in our band. And I mean really good players. In May we brought one guy in who is a Broadway drummer who is used to taking $500 a night for shows like Cats and Phantom of the Opera and paid rehearsals. I was super happy to have him because he was truly top notch. After the gig he looked at me and said, "you know I haven't played on a stage in almost a year and a half." |

That’s an expensive two hour ferry ride plus driving time. Still once you joined I do believe you became the member closest to Spell. I'm too far away from both of you--but if you were somewhat local I would certainly consider answering that ad. And it is fun to play with all worts of instruments. They might not fit everything you want to do--but they can work. I love playing with cello--and cello & flute mix together real well. |

Yeah, I'm a little far away. From Duncan, thirty miles north to Nanaimo, a two hour ferry trip to Vancouver, and then an hour or more driving up to Sea To Sky highway to Squamish. It's a long way to go for band practice. Otherwise, I'd be interested. I wish you luck in finding the right people.

So far myself and another guitar, a drummer, and two singers. We need a bass and keys. I can do bass in a pinch but really only good enough for practice not live. It is slow going because several of them are going visiting relatives after being cooped up for a year and a half.

People keep telling me that bass players are few and far between, so it'll be easy for me to find a gig. Hasn't happened for me so far.
I found the Facebook music groups were fairly active as far as personnel went, but if you haven't tried it yet, I'd recommend you should put up a profile on BandMix. I've found players there before, and also had calls from bands looking for people. It's free to have a profile posted, and you only need a paid membership to open communications with someone, but not necessarily to respond to messages.

No luck with this. Had one jam with another guitar player. It was fun. We’ll do it again. Everyone else that replied has disappeared or can’t find a time.May have to think about a solo act. Will look into singing lessons.

Getting a band together is always an adventure and a lesson in patience. Trying to find musicians with time to invest is the hardest part, especially for us older guys. I’m lucky that my wife plays the bass so when we do want to try the band thing we just get a singer and drummer which are the hardest ones to find, at least for us anyway. We had a band going this year, played 2 open mics and a real gig and then it fell apart. We fired the drummer because he couldn’t control his drinking when we played out. We’re trying out another drummer this weekend. When it comes to bands, it’s always something.

Yeah that's really bad news- you simply can't have that liability Yeah, I played with a band about 25 yrs ago and we were playing some great blues and R&B stuff. Our first gig started off great but the drummer and I were watching the other guitar player chasing down beers with shots of whiskey all night. When he came back for the last set he was staggering and slurring his speech. The last set was a big clusterf**k. He just cranked his amp right up to the point where he was playing over top of us all and some people started leaving. It showed us what this guy was gonna be like going forward so we kinda disbanded after that. I have maintained friendships with the bass player and drummer and have played a few gigs with them since but none of us know whatever became of that guitar player. He was a great player with a terrible problem. |

Substance abuse, whether it's alcohol or drugs, and playing in a band are generally a really bad combination. Years ago, I played in a four person band (guitar, bass, drums, and singer) that worked well for a couple of years. Then, the drummer developed a habit of spending all day Saturdays in a local beer parlor getting oiled up to play that evening. The straw that broke the camel's back was the drummer, absolutely glassy-eyed and hardly able stay on his drum throne, and the guitar player, distracted by both his recent ex-wife and his new girlfriend there at the same gig. It was a disastrous evening, and when it was over, the singer and I packed up our gear and after a discussion, decided we were done. Ever since then, when I see drug use that goes beyond a beer or casual doobie at practices (Not at a booking) I extricate myself from the situation. There's enough drama in bands just dealing with personalities and egos, without throwing booze or drugs into the mix.

I think we could broad brush that and simply say that substance abuse is a big problem in just about any setting. I'm really lucky there- we've played with some players who couldn't really hack it but never with someone who got blasted before or during a show. That said, I rule out band with an iron hand and the players know that I won't tolerate it at all. Our image has to remain squeaky clean with our audiences, who are generally older and often more conservative than the bar band audiences |

But after trying playing under the influence I realized how much it messes with my playing.
So even if there were times in my past that I drank more than I should have, I never drank when I had work to do or music to play.
these days I really ever drink, but that's more because I no longer enjoy the taste that much.
Ina and setting I would say something if someone was being impaired from playing properly--but I wouldn't expect them all to be identical to my position.
maybe if I was the bandleader?

My policy is not to ever drink anything prior to playing- even if it a barbeque in my back yard. |
