I always wanted to be the rhythm guitar player & maybe do a solo or lead part here & there. But I've wound up playing bass at church a lot over the years.
But I like both.
I say give it a shot.

I've been talking to a lady drummer about putting together a classic rock band and we've come up with a couple of potential candidates...one a lead guitar player/singer, and the other a rhythm guitar/harp/some keyboard/singer. We're still trying to figure out timing to get together. In the meantime, I got a response from a guitar player and drummer/singer that saw my ad on BandMix, and they've asked me about getting together to play some 60-80's classic rock, blues and country. Nothing certain yet, but it feels better than the hopeless situation that existed a month ago.

Without a doubt, there are thousands of musicians looking for something to do right now

Sounds like I'll be getting together with a drummer and guitar player this Saturday night to see if we're a good fit for each other. These guys are older, so they're more on the same page as far as music goes. It's been tougher to find players who don't want to do really hard rock and metal stuff, but this shows some promise.

I’ve only found a few people who lived or worked in the Hamilton - Stoney Creek area. One guy worked about 3 blocks from my house but after chatting with him, I found that he played nothing but metal where I was more into classic rock and blues.

Older than you? or just older in general? Hope it goes well. I always listened to music before my time... (With contemporary stuff thrown in.)

The get-together with the guitarist and drummer Saturday night was basically a washout. They don't play well and I could tell they were more about drinking beer on a Saturday night than actually trying be a band. No such thing as counting something in and everybody plays at the same time, no definite endings, just a musical fiasco. When I was loading my gear, the complimented me on my playing, but I was really grateful when they didn't try to nail me down to a "Next time". Ain't gonna happen.
It's kinda like that saying "You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince". I know that finding the right players for a band involves wading through a lot of wannabe's. I have a little higher hopes for the next prospects. The lady drummer I've been talking band with and I have a rehearsal scheduled for Tuesday , the 29th, with a singer guitar player, and we're trying arrange a time to play with another singer/guitar player/keyboardist/harp player who's expressed some interest.
There's been some discussion of whether we should try both these guys together or separately, but my feelings is one at a time is better. It avoids any sort of competitiveness that might arise between the two new guys, and it gives us the freedom to get a song-list from a new prospect and go in to concentrate on stuff that they know, rather than all standing around trying pick songs out of the air that everybody might know. I know, over the haul, it'll all work out, but it's painful when things are in the formative stage.

Ken, don’t go into these things with high expectations. A few years ago I was asked to join a band that had a few gigs but needed a guitar player and a bass player and needed someone to sing too. Apparently, the previous members just walked out on these guys. So I joined them and brought my bass player into the group too. We had a month before our first gig and after our first rehearsal, I was wondering what I had gotten myself into. However, we rehearsed a couple of times each week for that month and we got pretty tight. The first gig we did was great and I heard some people tell the leader that this was the best band he’s ever had….much better than his previous band.
Basically, the first two rehearsals were to feel ourselves out to see what music we liked and see how we got along. The songs were a little rough with weak intros and endings but the more we played them the tighter everything got.
Now, these guys that you were with on Saturday liked to drink. When my band rehearses, we enjoy a beer or two or a couple of glasses of wine. You definitely don’t want to get into a band of heavy drinkers as gigs can become nightmares….I’ve been there and left that band very quickly. So all I’m saying is give all these people a chance. They all may be decent players and it may take a few rehearsals / jams for their true musicianship to show up.
Good luck.

Hand in your citizenship immediately!!!! 🙀LOL, When I first started in a band in 2005, I used to carry an insulated half-sack container with a couple of non-alcoholic beers to drink while the rest of the band indulged in normal beer. One night when I was late leaving for band practice, I ran out the door with no beverages. It was a hot summer evening, and when the singer offered me a Labatts, I gratefully accepted. But when I went to drive home afterwards, I drove about half a block, realized I was plastered, and pulled off the road for several hours sleep. I've never tried beer since.

Rehearsal time is important so people can listen to cues from other players, especially when the song is unfamiliar to anyone playing. But if this one doesn't work out, just try again elsewhere

I think, as much as we'd like to believe that the impact of the virus is past it's peak, we'll still be feeling it to a certain extent. The second of the two candidates the new proposed band is considering has already been delayed....His father has contracted Covid, so he's putting off coming to band rehearsals for a period of time.

That’s too bad. It’s still going around. Ontario just dropped its mask mandates and believe it or not, I’m still seeing 85-90% mask usage in stores in use by all ages. Many people are gonna continue wearing them for a while longer because ITS NOT OVER!

I could be non impaired but it messes with my playing.

I enjoy a couple of beers during the gig, but only a couple. I usually have water on stage but I usually have a beer while sitting around waiting to start and maybe another during one of our breaks. I played in a band in the late 90s with an awesome guitar player who loved drinking beer with sambuca chasers. Then he used to go out share a few joints with his buddies. Our last set was usually a mess as he’d just crank up his amp and wail away. He was fine at rehearsals but gigs became pretty rough. He was a great guy and incredibly talented but I didn’t like explaining to my friends why we sounded like sh!t for the final set so I quit after about 3 gigs.

I really make it a point to not drink because if I even hinted to the trombone player that he could take a drink he would be all too eager and would be very loud about it, which is embarrassing

I'll have one beer during our gig. Btw Not to digress too much but I am dreading our first gig today for a related reason. The trombone player, when offered free food is also way too eager and literally shoves his mouth full of food and licks his hands. It may be funny for his pals when they are all drunk in a bar eating wings, but it is appalling in polite company. Once we were invited to a reception and he literally crammed fistfuls of cheese and Crackers into his mouth and I quickly moved away from him so I wouldn't be associated with it. The organizer of the event did say that we can eat after we play but I know I am going to have to say something to him and it will be unpleasant.

When I played in my old wedding band many years ago, our bass player would ask the kitchen if he could have a plate of the fish course that was being served. He loved fish but it would go right through him and usually part way through the set, I would have to take over on bass while he went to do what was needed.

It's starting to look like the band's taking shape. We're practicing Tuesday afternoon with the first singer/guitar player. I'm a little bit disappointed with the song-list he submitted because it's fairly hardcore blues....Stuff like Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bo Didley and B.B. King. He says he's open to try other kinds of music, so maybe there's hope. We have a Saturday afternoon rehearsal with the second guy who's a singer/rhythm guitarist/harpist/keyboard player. The list he provided is somewhat closer to my taste...a certain amount of classic rock such as Van Morrison, Elvis, Johnny Rivers, and Bob Seger, but there's also some country stuff that I'm only lukewarm about. I guess it stands to reason that a person's not going to be wild about everything a band plays, so I'm trying keep an open mind. However, I find blues tends to all sound the same and very predictable, and slow country almost puts me to sleep. I guess we'll just have to see how it goes.
I had a conversation earlier today with a guy I played in a band with briefly a couple of years back. He's a great guitarist and really above average singer and I'd have played with him indefinitely, but ended up being replaced because he said I "had no chemistry with the drummer". I did a booking with him this past summer which went quite well. He's busy trying to put together a four piece right now, but is already getting signals that some of the people may be less than committed, and he asked me to keep him in the back of my mind if these other players we're trying don't work out. I guess, if anything, I'm encouraged that after such a long stretch when nobody wanted to get together during the virus, it's finally looking like things are starting to happen again.
In the meantime, I guess I've got a few songs to learn before Saturday rehearsal. I can fake the blues without any trouble, but some of the country songs that I've never even heard before with be more challenging.
