This is already starting to be time/effort intensive and making it harder for me than it has to be. I hope this isn't a portent of things to come. That sucks. Giving you simple, basic info of what you requested is a no-brainer, IMO. They're lazy. Almost sounds like these guys just want jam 'on the fly'.

Lots of slogging, trying to get ready. I managed to create a songlist from the mentions of various things in our opening emails. I sent it to my contact (the drummer) asking if he could put me in touch with the guitar player or ask on my behalf what key they play songs in, so I could learn stuff and be ready. I got put off, being told that both of them work long hours and they don't have time, so I should just wait until we rehearse to jot things down. I'm not comfortable with that, but I don't seem to have options. There are probably twenty or twenty five songs that I've either never heard, or may have heard but never played, and I don't want to walk into a rehearsal unprepared. My only alternative seems to be to print out chord charts/lyrics for everything and make notes as far as when the bass is supposed to come in, and then do the necessary key transpositions on the spot when we play. This is already starting to be time/effort intensive and making it harder for me than it has to be. I hope this isn't a portent of things to come. Download “Spotify” onto your computer. It’s a free app for listening to music. The free app has ads every few songs whereas the paid app eliminates the ads. You can search the songs that you are worried about and listen to them. Unfortunately, you can’t save them.

I've also started locating bass cover versions to listen to so I can hear what other bass players are doing with the songs. I've been bookmarking everything as I go so there's an easy way to reference them. I'm anxious to get beyond this stage and actually start playing.

In the search bar, enter 'how to play **** on bass'. You get a lot of vids to choose from. I go through them till I find the most accurate.

I wish I could read tab to take advantage of everything the net has to offer, but I've tried to learn and found it absolutely painful and slow. When I played in a band about three years ago that did a lot of Doobie Brothers material, the bandleader was quite demanding about me playing everything almost note for note. He was the one that recommended I put the song name + tutorial into my search-box which brought up videos where someone would show you note-for-note how to play things. I found that using song name + bass cover tended to be the most useful, watching and hearing a player playing bass over the recording...It gave a lot of tips on accents and technique that just learning the notes didn't. Videos of Constantine Isslamow tended to be the most beneficial to me.

I'm having some difficulty printing pages with lyrics/chord charts....The print's too small for my limited sight. If asked for an answer in the Tech Guys Support Forum, but would welcome any suggestions you might have.

I'd been looking at some adjustment I could make to Windows or the printer to enlarge things, but I was barking up the wrong tree. There's a font adjustment built into the site I was downloading from that'll do it.

It stinks that this is a lot of work for you, but I'd see this as a positive challenge.
My recommendation is ask them to throw the easy Songs and anything familiar to you at you in the first rehearsal. There is no way that our Band could possibly get through 25 Songs in a 90 Minute rehearsal and it isn't a fair expectation for you to be 100% on a first run through. Get as much easy stuff solid as you can and build confidence rather than getting jung up on the stuff you don't know

I've already compiled bookmarks for videos of all the songs, and now I'm printing all the sheet music and bookmarking videos with tutorials and bass cover versions of the songs. I can't take the video content to practice with me, but I've been making notes on intros and points where the bass enters the song, any breaks in the bass, and particular hooks that are important. It'll be good to make as many notes as I can up front, but I'd feel a hell of a lot better if I'd been able to find out what keys they play the songs in so I could actually practice them. As it is, this feels like a long clerical job and I'm not enjoying it much.....I just want to start playing. I'm about three quarters of the way through the list, but I've procrastinated as long as I can and need to get this chore finished.

Making notes is a good idea, especially for songs that you're not familiar with (yet). For that, I'd recommend constantly listening to those songs over n' over while you're surfing the web to get them to a point of almost earworm. lol NEVER! think of it as a chore. It's all about fun. Enjoy what you're doing so that it doesn't become a chore. You don't want to lose interest now, do you? I'm sure that if the other guys have any class, they'll give you the time and space to learn the tunes (within reason). Have a blast and Rock On! \\m//

I gave it the old old college try, but I just couldn't work up any enthusiasm for the band I hooked up with a little while back. It was apparent after I'd played with them a few times that they were pretty set on what they wanted to play, weren't particularly interested in any input from me, and frankly, what they were playing just didn't feel like classic rock to me. They were nice people and had a good practice scene, but I was coming away from practices thinking that this just wasn't fun.....And as far as I'm concerned, there aren't going to be a lot of gigs for the next while, so the enjoyment has to come from rehearsing together. So, I told them that I wasn't going to hang in there and we parted on cordial terms. Just a few days later, I got an invitation to sit in with a blues band that had a no-show bass player. I was happy to have something to go to only a few days after kissing off the other band, so I accepted, knowing it was just for one night, but likely to be fun. It was a good time and I'm glad I went. I still have my ad up on Band Mix, and hopefully something will come along. If nothing else, the recent events have me picking up an instrument more often and feeling a bit more enthusiasm.

Wait a minute- is that a Hofner Violin bass you are playing there??? It's a cloned Hofner. It started life as a Jay Turser, but everything except the wood's been converted to Hofner parts. I love that bass....It's the lightest instrument I've ever owned and the most comfortable bass I've ever played.

There was a Jay Turser version called a JT-G2. I used to own the Turser version but sold it, which I regret now.

I just checked my band-wanted ad in the local online classifieds. It's still getting views, and it hit 105 today. Unfortunately, I'm thinking that the latest version of our current covid plague is going to depress the band scene even further for a prolonged period of time. I'm wondering if maybe bands are going to be more or less a thing of the past.

In my experience, covid's a factor - Twice in the last year, I've had good musicians refuse to consider joining a band because they were afraid of carrying home Covid to an immuno-compromised wife. I just added "double-vaxxed, boostered, and health conscious" to my band-wanted ad because I've had both the band I joined recently and the blues band I practiced with qualify me before they agreed to have me there.

Last week we brought in a new tuba sub who accepted a gig with only 4 hours notice. I can't imagine that brass players are more itching to play than guitarists, especially since guitar and bass players can even wear a mask if they really want to

I've been talking again to the lady drummer who wanted to get a classic rock band together last year. At the time, the temporary guitar player who was talked into rehearsing with us was disappointing, and so far no better prospects have come along. I mentioned to her yesterday when we talked that I'm also a guitar player and if it turns out that it becomes easier to find a bass player that I'll play guitar instead. I don't think I'm an exceptionally good lead player since I haven't worked at it full-time in bands for years, but I'm probably good enough to pull it off to get us started and would be happy to step back into a rhythm guitar role if somebody more qualified becomes available. I'd prefer to just play bass, but I'm willing to think outside the box if it helps get a band started.
