I've been talking the last couple of days in the "How's Your Day Going" thread about my trials and tribulations with the computer. Rather than side-track that thread any further from the normal subject matter, I'm starting a new thread to deal specifically with the subject of computers.
The advisor I've been working with has given me a bad time about using Internet Explorer. I don't normally use it, but it's built into my Windows 7 computer and is integral and can't be deleted. He suggested I should try Microsoft Edge, so I downloaded it, which was tough....It's built for Windows 10 and I finally, with difficulty, located a source that says it will work on Windows 7 so I downloaded it.
To be blunt, it sucks. I spent over an hour just trying to make it use Google as my home page instead of Bing, but finally threw up my hands and gave up. However, it's got me wondering if maybe the major problems I was having with the Windows 10 computer that I bought and then returned were due to the browser and not the operating system. I haven't been able to find any information about this online, but is it possible to use Firefox on a Windows 10 operating system?
I'm wondering if I can use Firefox on Windows 10 and overcome some of the really ugly problems that made me reject Windows 10 in the first place. If I can use Firefox on Windows 10 and have it look and operate similarly to how it appears on Windows 7, maybe I'd consider upgrading my operating system.

I've always used Firefox with Windows 10. No problems at all.

I have no advise as I struggle with computers as well, I feel your pain!
I am fortunate, our IT guy at work works for gin, he likes guns and I have a gaggle of cool guns. I wish he liked recording music, I am trying to set up a home recording studio and I am struggling with making all this stuff talk to each other.

If you have a basis for comparison, can you tell me if Firefox will look somewhat the same as it did on previous systems....Are the functions in similar locations and do things operate the same when it's used on Windows 10?

I can't remember exactly, but I don't remember any issues either if that answers your question.
What problems have you had with Windows 10? I honestly don't find it that different from Windows 7 and pretty easy to figure out.

I use firefox as well. Win 7 and 10. Never had problems. Definitely take advantage of their ad blockers and other add ons.

I've used Firefox for years no problem and I also have Avast Secure Browser which is a little faster and I can get into newspapers that are blocked by using Avast.

I'm beginning to suspect that maybe my problems weren't with the Windows 10 operating system, but actually with the Edge browser. If Firefox will work with Windows 10, that may be the best answer to the situation I find myself in now. I might end up having to take my computer to a technician to get him to switch the browsers over to Firefox because I can't seem to get anywhere with that Edge crap, but if it'll work, it probably makes the difference between me using a computer in the future and just saying screw it and walking away from computers for life.
I do remember that a couple of years ago, when I had an XP computer, I used Firefox successfully, and when I switched to the Windows 7 computer (which came with Internet Explorer), I was able to add the Firefox browser and it was a fairly smooth transition for me. Hopefully, if I can do the same thing this time, I'll download Windows 10, add Firefox, and life will be good.

I have Windows 10 machines and have Firefox, Opera, Chrome and edge. I can't say if Firefox exactly looks like it did 10 years ago but it's just a Browser- at the end of the day they all work pretty much the same.
Edge is the worst Browser I've used, and no, you can't Dekolleté IE of a Windows 7 machine.
See the other thread- just posted a reply there before I saw this thread. So feel free to ignore that post and just reply over here

Heck try other Browsers too like Opera

I assume when I download Windows 10, it'll come loaded with that shitty Edge browser. I'd probably go to someone else to do the transfer because I can't get to first base with the Edge browser. I couldn't even get it to display a search page. I know that to convert to Firefox browser, I'd need to find a download page, download it into my computer, and add it to memory. I doubt I'm capable of doing that.

I haven't had much luck with other browsers. I found Firefox worked and acted a lot like Internet Explorer (which I learned on) so it was fairly easy to transition to Firefox. Since then, I've tried Safari, Opera, Vivaldi, and Chrome, and I struggled and basically crashed and burned trying to use them. If I can use Firefox on Windows 10, I think I could live with making the OS change.

I can get you a download page for Firefox in 30 seconds if you want

I don't know why you would transfer anything.

However, when I try to use Edge, I can't even seem to get a search page that would let me find Guitar Talk to get a link to a Firefox download page. On Edge, I'm basically hamstrung and can't get anything.

It should pretty much download and install itself.
Go to the page click the download and follow the steps which are minimal.

And the only time I use the microsoft browser or whatever is to get another browser running.
Unless something is messed up on your computer this stuff should pretty much install itself no problem.

Okay, I just tried northernboy's suggestion to find Google in the address bar and it worked. I'm going to go offline now and try downloading Windows 10 and assume that I'll find a way to download Firefox. If it works, I'll be back. If I don't come back, you can assume it didn't work.....
One additional question......If I switch the OS to Windows 10, will it transfer my Mailbird email program as well or should I assume I'm going to lose all my email and addresses?

Yeah, I have Avira and Malwarebytes. I don't know if they'll transfer automatically or whether I'll have to add them manually.

I just tried the conversion to W10. It's really a lot more complex to change operating systems than just changing browsers. I'll probably have to take the computer to a tech and have it done by a pro.

I'll probably have to take the computer to a tech and have it done by a pro. Absolutely true. Replacing an OS is huge compared to just installing an application. An OS is really foundational to the entire System. Do you need a tech to do the upgrade? I thought it was pretty much clicking through?
