Just occurred to me, can your tech forum guys help you? I'm sure they'd have the knowledge, but the problem is that I can't access the forum to get advice when I'm in the midst of changing things over. If I had a second computer here they could help. I might even be able to do it myself if I could read the directions on the site online, but for the same reason, once I start the process, I'd lose the ability to see the directions. And, since my printer's out of ink (and the refill is a ridiculous price - 132.00 for a cartridge to fit a 59.00 printer) I can't even print a set of directions to do it. So, I'm going to have to farm this out to a tech.

I've always used Firefox with Windows 10. No problems at all. Thanks for your response. If you have a basis for comparison, can you tell me if Firefox will look somewhat the same as it did on previous systems....Are the functions in similar locations and do things operate the same when it's used on Windows 10? I have used Firefox for years. My system is Apple MacOS, however what I'm going to say is still the same for any operating system. Most software, if not ALL will change in look and feel/functionality over its lifetime. The software developers and the users can not avoid this fact.
As Microsoft & Apple bring out new versions of their operating system (OS), applications follow suit to keep pace with changes in look and feel/functionality the OS manufacturers may have introduced. If they don't they will lose market share and profits. Eventually the OS manufacturers will de-support older versions and applications will follow suit.
It's a bit like the evolution of the vehicle. You would not expect components from a Model T Ford to work on a modern Ford, BMW, Aston Martin or Tesla.
Getting back to Firefox, the look and feel has changed over the years I have been using it. I'm currently on version 92.0 (64 bit) and been using it since it evolved from Netscape around 2004.
I tend to keep up to date with software evolution of applications on my computers, so any changes from version to version have been relatively small and I rarely notice change, However if I made a large jump in OS, such as Windows 7 to Windows 11, then changes in many applications could be quite major and I would definitely notice any differences.
This is a mutable fact of life in most things let alone computers. You either adapt to facing change or eventually you will lose access to whatever you are trying to do.

Anyone know if Winders 11 gonna be free for awhile like 10 was. According to microsoft's site, yes.
Windows 11 will be released on October 5th. The new operating system will be available as a free upgrade for eligible Windows 10 PCs, or on new hardware that ships with Windows 11 pre-loaded.

I think there’s gonna be a new laptop in my future – I don’t want to buy one but I’m gonna need it for work in case my old one shits the bed suddenly.
Did a zoom conference last week with a guy in Ukraine and amazing how well this stuff works.

I’m hoping that Microsoft will include a Soylent Green kinda app so I can appoint Winders 11 as the executor of my estate - what could possibly go wrong.

I'm not doing so well getting my computer upgraded. Two of the computer shops I emailed asking for a quote didn't even respond. The third responded promptly, but quoted almost 200.00 to do what I wanted. It's out of the question economically, so my choices are to either wait till Christmas when I'll get a cash gift that would cover it, or to attempt to do it myself. The procedure's way too complex for me to do it from memory and my printer's out of ink, so I can't even print a copy of the instructions. I think I'll contact my buddy (my former landlord) and ask him if he'd be willing to print me a copy of the procedure. The computer's getting a bit more problematic every day (lots of messages saying "The page you wanted isn't available - You're not connected to a network") and I don't see being able to wait till Christmas.

I'm not sure what you're wanting to do, but if it's just upgrading to Windows 10, it's pretty simple. You just download the file, open it and it pretty much does the rest on it's own. Even I could do it easily!
Anyway, maybe some youtube videos on it might ease your mind a bit. It's really not that difficult though, hence why the computer places aren't responding.

I've looked at the procedure that was given to me by the computer forum expert that was advising me. There are some things about the process that I'm quite unsure about. One is that Windows 10 apparently is activated with a digital license that needs to be tied to my Microsoft account. I don't know anything about a Microsoft account...Whether I have one now, or how to access it. Also, it's recommended that a backup copy of my Windows 7 be created, and I don't know how to go about that. (I've never tried to use a USB for anything except transferring pictures from my camera into the computer). And, apparently a common complaint in doing the Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade is having the computer start to run slowly and getting lots of blue screens, and the recommendation is to transfer the upgrade program onto a media...either USB or disc...to avoid this. And as mentioned, I've never learned how to use a USB to download stuff from the computer, or how to burn a disc. It strikes me that there's likely a learning curve that I may have some difficulties with, since I'm entirely self-taught on computers and it might be tough for me, as a senior, to pick up some of the skills I'd need.

The friend that I mentioned asking to print a copy of the Windows 10 upgrade process of isn't computer -literate enough to help......He uses Windows 10 on his phone and doesn't even own a real computer, so he wouldn't be capable of it. And, it hurts a bit to say it, but I don't have any other friends to ask....Sounds shitty, but I lost virtually all my friends when I quit drugging eighteen years ago and haven't made any new ones. You guys online are the only friends I have. And, I considered asking someone on the forum that I trust to assist me by doing the remote take-over of the computer, but that doesn't give them access as an administrator which I'm pretty sure they'd need to be able to do it. I can't see any way around having to do this myself.
I've also thought of one additional stumbling block in doing this myself......One of the things that a person needs to do before they start the process is check to make sure the computer's got the appropriate drivers for the Windows 10 program and if not, add them. I haven't a clue how to go about that.

I have 10 on my laptops and I still have a desktop with 7 on it.
Firefox and Avast both work the same on 7 and 10. Whatever differences there might be I just do not notice them.
Both laptops initially had 7 and I upgraded them to 10. When I upgraded to 10 I just basically clicked the download and probably a few other things that it asked for and in it went. There was no big deal about it or anything that required a particular knowledge of computers.
One consideration is whether or not the machine has the capacity to handle an upgrade to 10 or an upgrade to 11. You can easily find out the specifications for your machine by looking in Settings I believe or just poking around till you find it.
One of the things that I find annoying about software upgrades is that there’s a tendency to relocate basic functions to some other area and then you have to get used to where they are now and the one most obvious thing that you think would be in a certain area is now moved somewhere else.
There’s really nothing to it.

I think you mean the opposite- that windows has the appropriate drivers for your hardware, but this would automatically update as long as you have internet. But regardless I certainly understand that this is simply out of your depths. I don't suppose your daughter would know how to do this? I'm not sure allowing someone to have remote access would work because the computer would have to restart multiple times during the install- can anyone comment on this?

Windows 2000 was the best I have Windows 10 on 3 PC, Linux on an old MacBook, Windows 11 on my laptop for work. I wish people didn't bitch because in my opinion Win8 was much faster and better than Win10. I might convert one of my PC's to a Hackintosh.

There should be a location where you can create an account or skip to do an local account. If you do a local account then if you upgrade your computer you will have to purchase another copy of Win10/11 if you don't have the Windows Key. If it's associated with an account all you have to do in log in and Windows will be activated.
If you do create a new account use your current email. Doesn't have to be a MS email account.
Make sure you get a large enough thumb drive or portable Hard Drive and when it ask you about a back up point it the USB drive.

I've spoken to my former landlord/friend about printing me a copy of the conversion procedure. I appreciate all the tips people have offered....I'm sure they'll be helpful when I actually get down to making the change.
One question I have - When I go to create a backup copy of my Windows 7 program and content before I start the conversion, how do I know how big a memory space/USB I'll need? I have a USB stick that accepts a 32 GB SD card that I normally use with my camera. Is that likely to be enough space? Is there a way to tell from something I can call up on the computer?

Right click on each individual folder, select properties, and see how much space each one is taking up. Folders you'll want to check are Documents, Music, Pictures, etc.
