I've spoken to my former landlord/friend about printing me a copy of the conversion procedure. I appreciate all the tips people have offered....I'm sure they'll be helpful when I actually get down to making the change. One question I have - When I go to create a backup copy of my Windows 7 program and content before I start the conversion, how do I know how big a memory space/USB I'll need? I have a USB stick that accepts a 32 GB SD card that I normally use with my camera. Is that likely to be enough space? Is there a way to tell from something I can call up on the computer? I'd recommend putting the files on a larger stick drive to back them up and putting the windows backup drive on a 32 GB stick drive. If you have a lot of photos on that drive it is hard to say how much space it will require but Northernboy is right on how to check the folder sizes

I have a very small proportion of my photos on the computer - Almost everything is in the cloud. I haven't done a firm calculation, but I suspect everything will fit on one USB stick.
I've located a page online with a procedure for downloading my Windows 7 onto a backup, so I think I'm getting close to being able to do this.

It'll set my timetable back a week because I'll need to wait till my next pension check gets here. Should I buy another stick that accepts an SD card, or is there a USB stick with integral memory built in? I'm really broke in the coming month, so I'd like to keep the cost as low as possible.

Any USB jump drive would work- you could probably get a 32GB unit for around $12 at staples. 128 GB is probably closer to $30 but you might not need that much for your files. The reason I recommend this is because when you load an OS image to a stick drive, you often have to format it, which would wipe the files. I think having an emergency backup of your files is a good idea anyway. Ideally that would be an external HD or SSD but that would cost a lot more and I want to keep the cost as low as possible for you. Once you back up those files from your computer onto the new USB drive and make sure there is nothing important on the old USB, you should be good to proceed. Again, I'm suggesting you back up those files in case anything goes wrong with the windows upgrade and the computers HD needs to be formatted. It may be unlikely, but as they say, stuff happens

I've been conferring with some people on a Windows 10 forum about the upgrade. There's some question as to whether this computer will make the transition properly. It's not a question of whether this unit has the capacity, but several people who own HP Compaq 8200 Elites have experienced difficulties which may or may not be solvable. So, there's a gamble involved in trying this, and everyone is recommending that I have a backup in case I have to revert. Based on a program they've had me download, called Macrium, it's being suggested that I should buy a 1TB USB storage unit. It's a bit distressing because it's a lot more money than I can really afford. (I can see another month with no haircut and a diet of Kraft Dinner ahead ) Anyway, I checked Staples to see what's available, and there are several to choose from, all at about 70.00 - 80.00. My question, never having used one or even seen one firsthand, is what do I need to connect this to my computer...Is it likely to be a standard USB to USB patch cable?
(Edited to add:) Since I posted this, I found a 1TB drive on Amazon for about half the price. This says plug and play...Should I assume I won't need a patch cable to plug this into the computer?

I think what they are recommending is that you buy an external HD or SSD, not a jump drive like you posted. External HDs are my recommendation as well but I was trying to keep the cost down as much as possible for you. Here's an example. linkBTW chances are you don't need anything nearly as big as 1 TB based on what you've told me

When I started by looking at Staples, they actually listed about half a dozen 1 TB units similar to what you posted....As a matter of fact, two of them were Seagates the same as you posted, but they were all out of stock. The ones in stock were all 200.00+, so that's what prompted me to look at Amazon. They also sell the same Seagate you mentioned, but by the time I paid the freight on it, it would have been well over 80.00. I didn't buy the cheapest stick they listed....They actually started at 20.00, but looked cheap and plasticy and I was less sure that they utilized standard size USB's, and I wanted to avoid having to buy an extra adaptor cable if they turned out to be those miniature USB's that gave me so much grief a while back. I hope the stick I bought will do what I need.

I think Dell have some laptops for about 3 or $400 cdn. Might be cheaper in the long run.

I wish I had some idea why the HD and SSD devices you seem to favour are better than the stick I ended up buying. With my 8200 computer, there are a wealth of extra USB ports easily accessible on the front of the tower where the stick could plug in, or even stay plugged in if there was a reason to, rather than a larger bulky box that would definitely be in the way.
I wish I knew more about these devices.....I was completely in the dark that there were differences. Anyway, what I ordered is still coming on Tuesday. If it turns out to be really wrong or inadequate for what I need, I guess I could send it back and order the Seagate you mentioned, but it's twice the price so I'd need to understand why there's a difference.

Since you're newer on the forum, you probably don't know some things about me that would help you understand why I'm staying with what I have. My eyesight is really poor....It's been limited all my life and it got a hell of a lot worse after my dual cataract surgeries in January of 2016. (One of the reasons I don't build guitars anymore.) Anyway, my computer at home uses a 37" monitor as a computer screen because that's what I need to see it. A laptop computer screen's way too small for me to see.....and it's also why I'll never own a smart phone.

Canceling an order at Amazon is easy- just click my orders (upper right) and then cancel. You might still be able to do it if you don't have prime and get fast shipping. For long term backup capabilities an external SSD (solid state drive) or hard drive is the best option because they are made to be very stable and intended for long term use as backup drives for all your files. They all come with a USB connector that would plug into the front of your computer so they are plug and play. They are much larger than stick drives (you can't hang them on your keyring). A stick drive is a decent budget solution but more prone to failure over time. Will that happen the first time you need to backup all your files? Very unlikely. They are more intended to be something that you can load your files onto from one computer and then plug into another and have your files available. (e.g. you want to bring your music collection to a friend's house to listen to it on his computer or show him a document that is on your home computer.) The stick drive will work in a pinch but it is not really intended to be a long term solution.

They do. Starting price is 380. That would probably be a good recommended solution as the new PC would already have Windows 10 (soon 11) installed, but Ken is under some heavy financial constraints which make that impossible. Although as far as bad eyesight goes- a laptop your be plugged into the existing monitor, as long as both have HDMI connectors. I had used a laptop with a broken screen as a desktop for years.

Okay, I've attempted to cancel the order. Doing an upgrade to what I'm now being told is the right item is beyond my means at the moment. I'm going to at least postpone and maybe forget about doing my computer upgrade. I'm pretty depressed at the moment and it might be time to just backburner the computer for a while.

Sounds like there may be a solution in the making. A relative of a friend closed a business about a year and a half ago and has a couple of computers sitting in storage. He thinks they may be Windows 10 Pro64, and if so, he's going to give me one. That would be great and the best solution to things. If, by any chance, the OS on that computer isn't what I need, I've been looking at new/refurbished computers on Newegg, where I bought my present computer. It looks like I could buy an HP EliteDesk 705 with Windows 10 Pro for 169.00 with free shipping - Actually, that would be cheaper than I'd spend to upgrade my present computer by a technician. Either way, it appears that I'll resolve my computer problems in the next few days. If I end up buying a computer, this is a likely candidate.... link

See if the computers that are being offered free are any good- many people upgrade their computers and the old ones are still very serviceable for a guy like you who just wants to surf the net. I have several windows 10 machines I could give you, but as I've said, you are simply too far and customs would be ridiculous. I can't see the link, but just buying a Windows 10 computer would solve the problem and you could take your time moving your files. And then if you want to upgrade that old machine you aren't dead in the water if something goes wrong

And then if you want to upgrade that old machine you aren't dead in the water if something goes wrong More than once I've kicked myself for recycling my old XP computer which was outdated but still serviceable. It would have made it a lot easier to consider doing upgrades on my present computer if I'd had a second machine here to confer with the computer forum while I was doing it. If I do get another computer, I'll keep the one I have now in my storage locker for such an instance in the future.
I learned my lesson about one thing over the last few days.....I know almost nothing about computers, and it's way too easy to buy the wrong thing without good background knowledge. If I do end up buying a new/refurbished machine, I'll select four or five that are all (to my eye) roughly equivalent and ask one of the gurus from the Windows 10 forum which one I should buy. If this was audio gear or musical gear, I'd trust my instincts, but I know less about computers than I do about cars (which is almost nothing) so I'll leave it to someone more knowledgeable next time.
If I'd known a little more when I bought my present computer, I'd have realized that the horrible problems I had operating the Windows 10 version I initially bought weren't the operating system.....it was the Microsoft Edge browser that was awful, and all I needed to do was change the browser to Firefox and I'd have been happy. One thing I've realized after having spent some time reading on the Windows 10 forum is how almost-universally despised that Edge browser is. I can't believe Microsoft is still trying stuff that down people's throats when their computer products would probably be a much easier sell with a better browser. For years I've spent time listening to everybody bitch about the automatic upgrades that were being inflicted that nobody seemed to want because they always seem to screw things up. At least now, if a person gets rid of Edge, you can shut off automatic updates.

Ken, the lessons learned are these. "Measure twice and cut once"- know what you need and why before pulling the trigger. Lots of us can help you and speed is not as important as buying the right thing. Just don't give up so easily. Computers are frustrating. I'm not a computer genius myself and sometimes things work out (or don't) for reasons that make no sense to us mortals...

Here we go again. I'd resigned myself to waiting till I could afford a replacement computer, but things have changed. The guy who had the computer I thought was going to be given to me has lent me a 3 TB outboard hard drive to download my Windows 7 program so I can attempt to convert my computer to Windows 10. It's being dropped off to me today, so I can probably begin the conversion process in the coming days.

Are you planing on cloning your Win 7 onto it or just doing a backup (copy/paste all of your files, documents/pictures/video/downloads etc)?

I need to do a backup of everything on my computer before I attempt the upgrade to Windows 10. Some of the reports on the Windows 10 computer forum from people who own the same HP Compaq 8200 Elite that I own indicate that other users have encountered some difficulties in upgrading to W10. I want to ensure that I have a means to restore my computer to W7 if the upgrade goes badly. If I'm successful in doing the upgrade, I'd like to transfer the data from the old program onto the new program. I'm assuming that the Macrium disc image that's being transferred onto the external hard drive will make that possible. I need to confer with my guru on the W10 forum to make sure that's possible.

This isn't looking too promising. It's being suggested that the best course of action would be to try to do a clean install of Windows 10 on my external hard drive first. If it's successful, and the computer is accepting it, then I can proceed to go ahead and back up my files and do the upgrade. But, I'm told that other people with the same computer have had issues trying to upgrade to Windows 10. I've been given a link to a page that details how to install Windows 10 onto an external hard drive, but I'm on my own as far as trying to get that done.

When you say install windows 10 on the external HD, you mean on the jump drive, right? I don't think you can boot windows from an external hard drive like the one you are borrowing. The whole point is to partition your important files from the windows installation drive.
