For me, today is definitely better than yesterday, which was characterized with a lot of school-related drama with one of my kids.

Just another day working the brick pile for me. Flying out to Nome for a couple days tomorrow, small job, in and out...hopefully. Monday thru Friday is usually Groundhog Day.

Had quite a good day yesterday. Went for a small walk then carried on working on another of my songs.
This one is about the Chartist uprising that happened in my home town of Newport in 1839. I have an association with it in that one of the leaders of the riot, a man called John Frost, is an ancestor on my mother's side.
Anyway managed to get drums, bass, couple of rhythm tracks, guitar solos & a tracking vocal down. Speaking to our other guitarist about the mix, we agreed that it needs another stronger rhythm track and one of the solos wasn't in the style/feeling of the track so will take a look at them or redo them. Finally will need to redo the vocals

I picked up a new computer last month and last night, I spent a few hours copying files from my oldest computer onto a flash drive and today I’m going to copy files from my last computer onto the same flash drive. Then I’ll move whichever files I need onto my new unit and retire the old computers. I tried doing this last month with my backup HDD and it froze. I’m pissed as I had lots of photos on there and I can’t retrieve anything. Later today, I’ll probably start swapping some parts out on my Fender Champ. I was tracking the package of parts that I ordered and apparently it has been scanned at the Stoney Creek postal station. Hopefully should be delivered later today or tomorrow as the sorting station is only about 1.5 miles away.

I wanted to get all of my important files backed up before I did anything to it. So I did that today. Weird thing though...my remote hard drive froze up the last time I used it. I was uploading files and then it paused and started making a “clickety-clickety-clickety” noise and I saw a spinning wheel on my screen that never stopped spinning. I unplugged it and waited a while and then plugged it in again. Same noise so I figured it was toast. Like I said, I was pissed at the time as I had a lot of photos and files on it. So I plugged it in today and it was working perfectly! So I copied all those files onto the thumb drive that I was using just to be safe. So now I have two backups, a flash drive and a HDD. if I change over to the SSD, do I have to do anything in the bios?

So now I have two backups, a flash drive and a HDD. if I change over to the SSD, do I have to do anything in the bios? I'm not sure I would use that old external hard drive if it is starting to have issues. This time you were able to recover everything but next time you might not be so lucky. And honestly, now those external HDD's are really cheap to replace. I was just looking on staples and a 5TB HDD goes for less than US $130. Obviously smaller capacity drives are cheaper. 5TB would probably allow me to back up every single PC that had ever been used in my house and I would still have space to spare. Remember when that much storage cost thousands of dollars? My advice too is although flash drives are handy, they aren't really designed to replace an external drive for heavy duty/ long term storage. They do have limitations and I have had them occasionally fail where I had to reformat them. If you swap the SSD into the laptop you will need to go into the bios to tell the computer where to boot from since the SSD won't have windows installed. So you will need some version of windows on a flash drive or DVD to boot from. If you don't have an old version of windows lying around, your new laptop has a factory version embedded on it that you can copy to a new stick drive. In fact, even if you don't do the SSD swap, i would recommend getting a new stick drive and saving that OEM windows version that came with the laptop. Since nothing actually comes with OS DVD anymore, it is important to make sure you have an OS just in case there is a failure.

Yeah, I’ve got a couple of new 64GB and a 32GB thumb drive that I am using to back up things. I might pick up an SSD and install it into the case of the current HDD. Then I’ll clone the HD that’s in my old computer and swap them once I’ve copied it.. I don’t think I can put a copy of W10 into my old computer because I don’t have a licence for it.

I'm not sure that you can't install the OS without a license. I seem to remember I took an OEM version of Windows 10 Pro and put it on another computer in the house. Although as I said elsewhere I usually use the full version of Windows 10 I bought for everything. No bloatware!

Sigh, this seems like it is going to be "one of those days" but I'll stay positive. One of my credit cards was frozen and more school drama- all before 8:00. Still plenty of time to turn the day around

Just received my 'invitation' to access our household online Census 2021 record. The census isn't due to be completed until the 21st March, co-incidentally my 75th birthday, but going to start filling it in and save a draft.
If I feel like it afterwards, I'm going to try and redo the vocals on my latest song demo. All instruments are done, I just want to see if I can better the vocals

The day started off well, I fixed my Deluxe reverb this morning and then we went out this afternoon looking for a new bathroom cabinet and sink for our powder-room and a new mirror for our upstairs bathroom. We also picked up a new comforter for our bed. Then I got a call from my daughter while she was driving home. She said she was hearing “clicking” from the front drivers side, but only while she was driving. So inknew it wasn’t the engine. I started thinking that it was possibly the CV joint but this is a 2018 Mazda 3 with 50,000km (30,000 mi) on it. So I told her to just drive it home slowly. When she got home we found a screw in it. It’s not losing much air so I’m going to top it up in the morning and she’s gonna have it fixed at the garage next to her workplace tomorrow. Tonight I’m gonna relax and watch the hockey game.

I couldn’t understand how it may have been a CV joint. I can’t see a CV joint failing at 30K miles. I’ve only had to replace a CV joint on my old ‘88 Honda Accord. I’ve had a Corolla, Mazda 3, Ford Fusion and a Windstar all hit 150K miles on the original CV joints. Still driving the Fusion.
Oh and my wife finally received her final bit of information to finish off her income tax. So, I’m gonna sit down and input the numbers before I watch the game. Shouldn’t make much difference in the amount of money we get back.

Yes, but if a CV boot tears and goes unnoticed for a long time (like immediately after a servicing), the joint could go if enough crap gets in. But, yeah, that's really unlikely in a newer car. I got a letter today from my tax accountant and it looks like I will get a decent refund this year for a change. That is most welcome since I have been contributing 50% of my salary to my retirement account to hit the maximum ASAP.....

She just had the car serviced on Tuesday and I’m sure they would have noticed the grease spray.
My wife was doing temp work at the hospital ever since she retired. She would fill in whenever the girl who replaced her would go on vacation. Because of lockdowns and border closures, the girl never went away anywhere so my wife only worked one week. So she really didn’t have much work income. In fact, she’s getting back an additional $37!
The past couple of years, I tripled the amount that I was putting into my retirement savings plan and then I put my severance directly into it too. I was worried that I would owe because I received unemployment insurance and Canadian pension. Neither of them are taxed at a high rate and so I knew that I’d be paying more tax due to my income. All my retirement contributions helped me and I even get back money. I usually call my income tax refund a “Long and McQuade Gift Card”

I usually call my income tax refund a “Long and McQuade Gift Card” I've been concerned that there would be no public pension since I started working so I've always put the max allowed by law into retirement. It has meant no expensive cars or big house but I wouldn't have it any other way.

I’ve been living in the same house for 39 years. It’s been paid off for quite some time. Like you, We haven’t been buying new expensive cars for the last 20 years but rather buying them a couple of years old. I wanted to buy myself a nice high end SUV for my retirement but settled for a loaded Hyundai Tucson. We’ve paid for both of our kids university educations so that they wouldn’t be burdened with student debt for years to come and we have had no problem helping them out with expensive purchases like a new car for my daughter or a new kitchen in my sons house.
It helps that my wife receives a decent pension from the hospital. Between that, my government pension and the little bit that I take out of my retirement savings every month, we haven’t touched our regular savings and haven’t had to go without. We’re still living the same life as when we were working. Things may change once the world opens up as we may want to do some travelling in the future.

We’re still living the same life as when we were working. Things may change once the world opens up as we may want to do some travelling in the future. That's exactly what I am hoping to do myself. Our house isn't paid off but our interest rates are low (2.75% fixed) so my interest payment is less than $300 a month, which is manageable. The only car I ever paid more than $20k for is my Golf GTI, which I negotiated down to $20,500 (new). Talk about being in the right place at the right time as that was always my dream car. I'm not complaining because it is my own doing to raise my retirement contribution to 50% of my paycheck. It is forcing us to tighten our belts early in the year, which I think is a very valuable exercise once in awhile. We're basically down to only groceries and gas as expenses. I'm positive that at least some of the family will be going to Germany in the summer so that is a looming expense that I have deferred until I am ready to afford it. However these days planning the family trip together is all but impossible with 4 adults in the household. I can't wait for that Canada border to open up too!

I miss heading over to Buffalo for shopping and dinner. We also like heading down to the Finger Lakes south of Rochester and spending a few days hitting the wineries and museums. My SIL and her partner go down to Lakeland Florida in the spring for a couple of months. In the past, we’ve joined them for a couple of weeks of relaxing and golfing. We were hoping to go this year but it’s not happening.
Hopefully soon.....

Of course, you guys are way closer to the border than we are and can see the impacts first hand. When we want to go to Canada it is a big deal with the Niagara Falls border crossing 400 miles away and the Plattsburgh crossing (going into QB) around 350 miles away so for us it is a full blown vacation, not just an evening out!
