So we should all be playing boutique amps. Without a boutique amp you cannot get the tonez.

I get the tonez. Yo shoppin fo dat Phaez tonez? Nae feckin chance pal. Most of the people on MLP who own them are so obnoxious about them that I would never own one. I remember complaining about their attitude at one point and they lost their shit screaming about tone this, tone that, you don't know tone, etc. When I pointed out that I wasn't talking about the amps, but about the attitudes of some of the owners, they simply couldn't grasp that I was not attacking the amps.

I'm not a fan of formulaic tone chasing. 'This guitar' with 'this pedal' and 'this amp'. I usually just respond to what's happening with what I'm using. I have lots of stuff, mostly not expensive. But I'd really rather have variety as I've never heard 'THE' sound.
I like Gibbons for instance. I'm happy if I get in the ballpark then take it a different direction. But I also like Ronson who was notoriously indifferent to what amp he used.
If I was covering other's material in public it would be a different story.

Well. I look at it like I wish NASCAR still was, "run what you brung"...
Almost any guitar and amp can sound good if the 'fingers' are there...
Does it really make a shit what Jobo, Johnny Lang, Kenny Wayne, Robben Freaking Ford, Jack Pearson, Jimmy Herring, etc., plays with/through?
Nawt. That's why there are knobs and stuff...and you can buy speakers and stuff too to make whut you brung sound even better...
I wish I still had the first generation little Gorilla amp...one of the best sounding amps I've heard...and solid state on top of that...

I could type out a long diatribe on boutique amps but I won't. I'll just say the following... Just why in two hells would I pay $3K or more for a boutique with an old Fender design preamp? Huh? Well? I found my old ass Legend I think for $241. My Blackstar Studio combo was a brand new floor model that somebody knocked a mic stand over and it put a dime dent on the back edge of the top that you can hardly even feel for $350 brand spanking new (sells for $599 at discount big boxes). My Peavey Vypyr Tube 60 w/ the big Sanpera II was $350 I think.... Little Peavey Envoy 110? I snagged for almost NOTHING... I could go on listing... They ALL sound great.... I'm not even gonna go into the hand-wired vs. PCB bullshit... So yeah... Run what you brung...

After my last PC blew up I aint got nowt left. Have to start all over again. Bummer.

Where's my stick? sFun_slapfight_zpsxfyov2nv Would this be a Stout Stick perchance? Rune is the chap to go to for all your Stick needs. A Stick for all occasions especially if they involve being asked to cough up readies for taxi fares or uninitiated waiters presenting him with a bill. I have to look away when the smiteing unfolds. It's fearsome.

Careful young Rizla, or you may provoke old Rune to bestir himself from his comfy fireside and travel north of the border in his Purple Chair to berate you for your inability to learn the Lesson of The Stout Stick properly.

I dunno much about amps except how to plug them into an outlet, how to plug a guitar into them, and how to twiddle dials until I'm reasonably happy with what I'm hearing.
For a minute there, I was considering getting a kit to build a vintage Tweed type amp. But really, I don't feel as though I really and truly need one. I was just thinking in terms of having an amp that could reproduce the sound of Carlton's guitar on a couple of Steely Dan songs... but then I got a compressor and found that I could get to more or less the same place using a Fender Hot Rod Deville.
I realize that after only five years of playing that I still do not feature the same level of discernment as folks who have been playing for decades. How could I? But there are nonetheless times when I'm watching discussions taking place among those who do *not* feature the same level of seniority as many of my regular contacts on this board and elsewhere, and find guys of about my same general vintage speaking "authoritatively" about this, that, or the other amp.
I dunno, maybe I've got bad ears. I do wear a hearing aid in each ear, after all, because I suffer from one hell of a case of tinnitus. Lots of things went BOOM! around me over the years, and so I suffer a midrange impairment. It's correctable with hearing aids, though, and I'm definitely not tone deaf.
I just work with what I've got. But there are times when I wonder if the difference between this or that amp is really so great, of if it's not the case that some of these guys just like to chew the fat about such things and are likely to say all sorts of things.
One of the things I like about being around you guys is that I actually trust your opinions.

To paraphrase Keith Richards - "I could use a Silvertone Amp, and a Gretch Guitar, and I still sound like me."
Even if one doesn't think much of his skill level, one knows when it's Keith. It's all in how you hit the notes.

I fell for the whole tone thing when I was less experienced. None of it made me a better player so I smartened up, matured, and realized what was important. As I mentioned upthread, while I still want a DRRI because I love the sound I am picking up a Marshall Class 5 in the next week or two (depends when my buddy manages to push himself to actually part with it). Some people like it stock, some people like it modded, and some people hate it no matter what has been done to it. But who fucking cares? So long as I like how it sounds for me, that is all that matters. If it does what I need it to do then I will be happy. I might be tone deaf! I have noise induced hearing loss (too much time spent working in bars in which the music was really loud). I have a hell of a time trying to distinguish strumming patterns and I cannot tune a guitar by ear for the life of me. There is no way in hell that I could ever properly learn a song by ear, just none. Intonation is very important when playing slide and I am a bit worried that my bad ears will negatively impact my ability to hit the notes properly. My intonation might make someone like Tom cringe but, as a bedroom player, so long as I like how I am making the song sound then that will be good enough for me. I am that way with my Mustang. People say that the amp models in it are great (especially the Fender ones) and I agree that some are really, really good. But with some others I am damned if I can hear much of a difference from one model to another. For many it is. Or they will be perpetuating internet myths. That's it. Rob has officially lost his mind
