I guess I just play with a light touch....I've used that pick on .125 bass strings, and it still looks like new.

Yeah, a player who manages to hang onto one pick that long should almost be in Ripley's Believe It Or Not, lol. I've never ever heard of someone who has played the same pick for years! Are you really light on your stuff or am I very hard on mine? My fender heavy picks are only usable for so long before they are basically sanded round by the strings... The ones I use last a single gig. I usually put 3 in the little coin pocket of jeans for a gig. Normally just use 1 per gig, but sometimes I drop it so may go through 2. When I check them after a gig, if the edges are serrated I throw them away. I buy them in boxes of 100, which cost about £20 and have loads. These days, I am using my fingers more and more, so perhaps use less than I used to

I have picks I've used for years--although since I don't gig that could affect it. But I also might just use hardier picks. And the stone ones I have should never wear out (Although they could break.)

I'm thinking back to high school and the old Mohs Scale I never noticed extra string wear, but I suppose it's possible. It probably depends on the strings you use & your touch. When using a stone pick I use a very light touch--I'm not picking anywhere near as hard as a regular pick--because you don't have to.

Here is a shot of some stone picks--along eight some pick shaped shells & stuff. At the bottom is a piece of agate I though I might make into a pick. the two at the top are more recent--and I have others by the same company--which is sadly gone--they were in Northern Alberta--so much cheaper to order from than other companies that sell them--and you pay a lot more for shipping--and also for the pick int he first place. One of the unseen ones is Obsidian--which is my favourite of my stone picks--due to the smoothness and the thickness. the next row has one hat is thicker than I like (Bought it in Hawaii many years ago) the next one is too thin--it feels like I'm going to break it just beholding. The last one in that row was just right. As you might be able to tell it smashed when I dropped it on a cement basement floor. I loved that pick-used it almost exclusively for a couple of years, before I got a 351 shaped agate pick I lost a few months later. I started using Tortex after that--but pulled out the broken one one day to use it for the first time in a while--but dropped it..ARRRGH! I couldn't find a decent price on storm picks for a few years---so mostly Tortex & a few others.

They do look mighty pretty! Well that's why I kept the broken one. I actually traded a different agate pick for it. a guitar playing friend really liked the look of an agate pick I had and offered to trade--since they were the sae brand, shape, & thickness--and I liked the look of his pick better--I traded When t broke I kept it for the look. Some of my other stone picks are plainer. But I do love them.

These would be more commonly found used for bass (Rubber & felt) or ukulele (Felt) Rubber & felt picks I bought them for fun. I don't really use them though. But some love them.

I'd like to try a stone pick sometime- where does one get them These days mostly online. the local store I got mine form no longer exists. And the place I got mine online from is also out of business--so I can't recommend any specific site--but there are a few--with a wide variety of prices. they will cost more than regular pick--but they won't wear out--but they can break if dropped. And thinner ones could be snapped if bent. I've seen then anywhere from $10-60, and more for some with rarer stone--but you don't need those. And I wouldn't pay $50 or 60 for one.

I'll have to look around- I'm interested in trying one. But yeah, not for $50. I'd probably take a punt at $10

I think I paid $15 for the last one I bought--and I won a couple from that company that is no longer around.
They can save you money in the long run if you go through a lot of picks--just don't lose it or break it.

Actually an amusing thing from my playing today I was using a Dunlop nylon pick at one point(1.14mm) I set it down & then couldn't find it at first--so I was looking all over for it--and I found it, but then I remembered it's glow int he dark. I would have saved a few minutes if I'd just turned out the lights.

I feel like such a "pick dullard" Once things open up more--just hit some music stores & buy a bunch of different ones--for fun. Don't worry if you'll actually like them or not.

The piece of agate I posted as part of a larger picture is one I was thinking of making into a pick--I thought someone I knew had a rock grinder/polisher--but they didn't.
The agate itself was fairly cheap--so if you know anybody that has one, and you have a nearby lapidary --check it out. Make sure you have at least a general idea of the dimensions.
Maybe it won't work--but if the agate is cheap enough--it will still be an adventure.

I looked online yesterday. Not surprisingly there were a lot of places selling them, but the prices were very wide ranging. One guy had them made of fossilized dinosaur bones for $125 each. Although that sounds like a great conversation piece, it seems like an incredibly expensive luxury item which is far too expensive for the likes of me!

I can't vouch for the picks & the site--but $12 (Canadian ) plus $4.45 shipping is a good price. link They have agate ones for a little more. this siteHas eve cheaper options (Not sure on shipping costs though. Again I can't vouch for with site or their picks--but if I was looking for more stone picks--I would consider them.

Thanks, I will check them out Well if you get one or more, let us know if you lied them or not. I do realize they're not for everybody--but I love the way they slide off the strings and you can get faux slide tones, and pick harmonics are simpler. And you can get a nice smooth tone as well. If you like give in a pick though, you might not like them. But it was getting my first stone pick that really helped me learn pick control.

Only one way to find out!

Well I've seen more than one source saying the cheapest way to change your tone (Other than work on your technique--which may or may not be free) is to try a different pick.
And that's something I agree with--and I love experimenting with it.

Why can't we have GAS for picks?

We certainly could. Would that doritos pick give us a differentvkind of GAS?

I noticed on Facebook Marketplace, there's a guy in Victoria selling guitar picks made from woolly mammoth tusk for 40.00.
