So, what's your favorite overdrive or distortion pedal?
I like my MXR Custom Badass '78 Distortion, and my Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret II.

In my younger years it was the boss metal zone with a boss equalizer and let my amp do the rest. I always favored the boss analog Tu series tuners. For rock and blues i completely change. I used the ibanez tube screamer, MXR delay, boss super chorus, I used the fender mustang floor model as a pre-amp but didn't use many of the effects features, but did use the fender amp model a lot. All this stuff was mounted on a powered trailer trash pedal board. I also changed from the boss to a korg strobe tuner. I went through lots of stuff to arrive at those set-ups but that's it in a nutshell.

I don't have a favorite. Like Lyrica I use multiefx. Or models. Actually I guess the distortions on my Digitech RP-1 or the DuoRectifier models on my Vox VHT30. Although right now I'm sort of doing an integrated thing with a Behringer UltraTwin preamp out through a Boss Me5 and it's distortions. Which would be. DS1 and a OD2 equivalent. So. I didn't really answer the question did I?

Knew a lot of folks that used the me5, never used one myself but i've been told that it is a good workhorse pedal. Never used any boss multi stuff but practically everything else.

Boss pedals are hit and miss, the good ones are really good and the bad ones are really bad. I was messing with some MXR stuff towards the end.

i'm told boss doesn't do distortion very well. (for the most part). they do overdrive great i'm told, and delay and chorus especially but everyone says they suck at distortion. well, the Me50 has some pretty nice distortions as long as one doens't go overboard on them wiht the amount of it

My favorite was a Nady TD-1 12AX7 overdrive that like a total dumbass from hell, I don't have it now... Damnit... I think it was actually a Joyo under another name.
I liked the Tubescreamers. When they first came out, I pulled one out of that Ibanez shipment and took it home.
I just a few weeks back bought the DOD yellow boost/drive reissue on that Mus Friends stupid deal of the day for 49 bucks.. Didn't need it but it was 49 bucks, damnit...
I like my Digitech rp500 big-ass-multi-all-kinds-of-wild-as-hell-shit floor unit...
I have a single exp pedal Zoom multi with badass overdrive and good other stuff I don't use much....
I've only heard Tubes of the Simble pedal but I can say with 100% certainty I will have one when I build my butter and egg money stash back up....
If my amps were Fenders (no master volume) I would have a yellow DOD in the back of each fo bitchslappa da preamp... I'm just not fond of loudastwohells....
I am not one to worship at the altar of a specific brand. If I like it, I'll buy it. I don't give a rat's ass if it is ZimGar....

Their distortion pedal sucks but the multi effects pedals they have put out aren't bad. I used the metal zone and equalizer in my thrash days. After that I didn't use boss for any overdrive or distortion effects. I went to the tube screamer for lead boosts and let my amp do the rest. I had a mxr delay and a boss super chorus.

The MXR '78 Distortion is great. It gets a really good 70s distortion sound. I can get close to Reverend Willy tone with it through my Bugera. The Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret II is designed to sound like a Marshall, and it gets very close. I can run my amp clean, and get good sound from it. My first dirt box was an original ram's head Big Muff (I wish I hadn't sold it when I was a kid). The worst distortion pedal I ever owned was some kind of DOD box. Sounded like angry bees, and a scared bear all in one. Unusable.
If I was suddenly wealthy I'd get a Divided by 13 amp, and a boatload of pedals. Those amps sound great with pedals. My Bugera works well with pedals.
I've always been a pedal junky. I've gone through dozens. One of my favorites is an A/DA Final Phase. A great phase shifter with built in distortion.

At the moment I am just using the overdrives and distortions in my Mustang III. But to be honest, I barely use those as I've come to appreciate a really good clean sound. If I eventually buy a Deluxe Reverb or something I will then buy an overdrive or distortion - or two. But right now I don't need them.
That also brings to mind another issue. My whole view of amps, tone, etc. changed when I finally tried a DRRI and that took me away from the pursuit of Marshall (or British) type tones that I had been on. I only play at home and, to be honest, the Mustang does its job very well, certainly as well as a hack like me will ever need. Based on that I am not sure if I will ever buy a DRRI. Maybe if I find a great deal during the annual inventory blowout that my guitar shop has (it is chain wide so there is a lot of stuff available).
I still want a DRRI but I am not sure that I need one.

just cause you don't "need" it doesn't mean you can't "get" it lol. if you have the disposable income that is.

just cause you don't "need" it doesn't mean you can't "get" it lol. if you have the disposable income that is. L&M has an inventory clearout every spring. Individual stores post lists of what they have available, along with the sales prices, in the week leading up to the weekend of the sale. Those lists get posted over at the Guitars Canada forum so that people can plan where to shop (people in the GTA, like myself, have about a dozen locations to choose from). I mentioned to my friend who works at L&M that I wuold be doing that because I want a DRRI. He told me that, as soon as I find out that there is one available, I can text him and he will transfer it into my local store for me. The originating store might not like it, but the manager at my local store is a good guy and he would step in and force the transfer. If there is one at a good price, I will jump on it.

So, what's your favorite overdrive or distortion pedal? I like my MXR Custom Badass '78 Distortion, and my Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret II.ok, my fave is the Buffalo Effects Rams Head Muff, big fat juicy sound, boost it for solo's with the BD2(on the edge of dirt), then there is the London Fuzz when you want something less refined, smooth it out with the BD2 or adjust the amount of fuzz using your volume control, finally the BD2 good on it's own.

Ethos, hands down. Will get another someday.
After that, a good old Tube Screamer.
Currently using an MXR Distortion III, good pedal.

Knew a lot of folks that used the me5, never used one myself but i've been told that it is a good workhorse pedal. Never used any boss multi stuff but practically everything else. I like it cause the main efx (comp,overdrive/dist,para eq,chorus/flange,and gate) are analog and basically the early 'classic' Boss efx. Only the reverb/delay is digital. The overdrive is good as is the compressor and chorus and noise gate. Some folks object to the dist as a 'hair band' kind of distortion but with the parametric eq I don't see it's a problem. i like the Digitech RP-1 for the same reason...analog guitar stuff but digital reverb/delay. Between the two I have about 8 different overdrive/distortions.

I really like the Digitech 500, but I'm not afraid to get in there and jank with all the settings to get what I want out of it... Like I posted over there, I have it set up with none of the effects stomps on, just a bit of master level boost to slap the amplifier preamp a bit. Still playing with tweaks here and there. I have found that with the multi's, you must get in the mud with it and jank, twist, tweak, kick, and cuss to get what you want. I'd still like to know what lunatic comes up with most of the patches... I think they tailor them for young ignorant teenagers that like weird sounding stuff... I prefer my 500 because it is one box with a bunch of stomps built in with a stomp button for each type... While each is not perfect for every taste, with janking, all can sound pretty darn good... The first step is getting the amp set with no stomps so it sounds good...then the multi is like pouring gravy on the mashed potatoes... If the amp sounds like cardboard, nothing is gonna fix that... Still gonna get a Simble pedal though... Just got to have one after listening to the vids and what others have written about it.... My all time fav though is still the channel switch stomp for the Legend amp...

The problem with most multiefx is that the presets are written to feature all the effects. Not to necessarily give a bunch of good patches. People have to get in there and customize 'em. Otherwise they're just turned off. Some just take them as is and don't see the potential. Which is what presets are for...displaying potential...maxed out mostly.

A lot of folks will listen to stock only when looking at one... I'm gonna jank it on a user setting... Damn those ROM patches, I don't use em. I stay in the user patches... I may start with a stock patch for the hell of it, but I never use the ROM patches... Most suck...

I don't think I ever remember a time when I heard a preset and thought "wow, that's perfect". I always customized, of course to do that you have to read those non-user friendly instruction manuals but it always turns out to be easier then they printed it.

The worst user manuals are from Line 6. Why do they insist on using "Hipster" language?
