Maiden is one of my favorites. Their new record The Book of Souls is a great piece of work.

1985 so it seems. This was an ad on British TV at the time for Lucozade. I had just got a job teaching music in a High School in Paisley. "Can you teach me how to play this?" Was a request I got every other day from beginners. EEK! couldn't play it meself.

I taught lessons to a kid for awhile back in the 80s. I was actually pretty fast at the time. I was learning Gary Moore's metal stuff. This kid asked me to teach him some Yingie Mingie (Yngwie Malmsteen). That was a good laugh.

Those kids kept me on my toes. Was still a kid myself back then.

Fired up my old XBox 360 last night & stuck on GTA 4 The Lost & The Damned motorbike DLC. Hadn't played it in a good few years so was belting around the city on the bike & the radio station started playing Run to the Hills. Parked up & head banged away till it was finished then carried on & took out a rival biker clan with shotguns & machine guns...As you do.

When I last lived in London there was a pub just across the Hackney Road from my place that became my local while I was there (the Sebright Arms...I still can't remember how I ever found it because its front door was off another street and one had to go down an very narrow alley to get to it from the Hackney Road). Once the staff got to know me, I was included in their weekend lock-ins. When they were having a lock-in they would allow us downstairs to smoke. The room had a small bar at one end and smallish stage at the other end. It turns out that was one of the bars that Maiden played in their early days, and it was that room in which they played. I had no idea about this at the time, and only discovered that after returning to Canada. It is cool to think about now but I wish I had known at the time. It turns out that Phil Collen played its main floor not too long ago. Too bad there were no interesting acts like that playing at the bar while I was living there. metaltalk.net/columns2016/20166703.php

They are one of mine too.
When I was last living in London (same time as that mentioned above) I got on the tube one day and noticed that there were a lot of people in Maiden shirts, etc. Turns out the band was playing Donnington that day.
So I am sitting on the tube and across the aisle from me were a bunch of guys from some Scandinavian country. I couldn't understand a word they were saying but they were all decked out in Maiden gear and one of them had a huge tattoo of Eddie as The Trooper on his upper right thigh. He was, of course, wearing jeans that were strategically ripped to display the entirety of said tattoo.
I settled back to listen to my iPod and read a book during my trip across the city. I kept looking over at them and didn't realize that I had started staring (if you had seen the tattoo you would have stared too) until I noticed one of them giving me a look that basically said "what the fuck are you looking at?". When I noticed this I realized that I had been staring so I leaned across the aisle and showed him the screen on my iPod. I was listening to Aces High at the time and when he saw that he was all smiles and started telling his buddies, in a rather demonstrative manner, that I was listening to Aces High. I had turned down the volume so that I could hear him, but the only words I understood were "Aces High". The rest of it sounded like the Swedish Chef from The Muppets. I guess because I was a fellow Maiden fan that made me OK in their books and they forgave me for staring at them because they were all smiles when they later exited the train and a couple of them gave me the thumbs up and said "Aces High" as they were walking away.

Poor ol Maiden. They've always been dismissed as an overblown caricature because of the artwork, and image. I know the "galloping" rhythm bothers some folks but it's one of there signatures. I've been fond of them for years, in part because they are almost a progressive metal band. I was glad that Book Of Souls was really a great album.

The trooper was the first maiden song I ever learned. Never had the chance to see them live but my brother did and he said it was awesome. The tv has been showing the flight 666 concert tour a lot lately. They are the blueprint for a successful metal band. The horsetrot Rythem is what makes them who they are. Their clever use of that Rythem in many of their songs makes them instantly recognizable. I learned the horse-trot while learning the trooper as that is what it is from beginning to end...literally. For me iron maiden is an awesome timeless metal band. I never get sick of listening to them.

In fact, sticking my neck out, I'd rate it right their with Piece of Mind, or Number of the Beast.

Sunshine, Moonlight, Good Times, Edro. Although I'm sure we can shift the blame over to Frigg. He's very blameable.
