Yeah that's a bit expensive. In that shape it likely hasn't been well cared for internally, as well.
And taking your time to find the right one is key. I've played a lot of Marshall setups that I just didn't like. Plus there are a lot of guys who think their gear is worth waaay more than it is.

Finding gear takes some serious patience.

And you have to love the people who have older MIM Strats or Teles who, because of the current new prices, are asking more for their used guitar than they paid for it when new.

I remember before Fender started jacking up the prices you could get the MIM and MIK guitars used for like $200. Great guitars but I can't say that I'd step up to pay the current prices. Could build a better partscaster.

Could build a better partscaster. Current prices, and the fact that Fender doesn't make a guitar with the specs that I want, is why I have gone the Partscaster route. I want a double bound sunburst body, vintage style three saddle bridge, a neck with a rosewood fingerboard that has a 7.25" radius and vintage sized frets. In order to get a guitar with those specs from Fender I would have to get one custom built, and pay thousands for it. By building a Partscaster I am getting a guitar with those specs for $600-$700.

It's definitely the way to go. And besides, I'm at the point where I'd only look for a guitar under $500 for shits and grins.

With the Canadian dollar sinking along with world oil prices, as well as Fender's price increase, MIM Standards are now $799 up here.

The new American Professional series are $1899 Holy crap!!! The MIM Classic '60s Tele I ordered in before deciding to go the Partscaster route sells for $1079. I bought the Classic '50s version about three years ago and paid $799 for it. The Bajas sold for the same price back then and are also selling for $1079 now.

The inflation is a bit much, but I guess that's what happens when our dollar dives to $0.75. I tried the new American Professional Tele last night and I have to say, it's a pretty nice guitar. An interesting blend of vintage and modern features and the neck is definitely more substantial than the American Standard (I was able to A-B them). The American Standards are $1499 now.

At the time the mims were floating around the 400 range but could be had even cheaper, those days are gone I guess.

So the AC15 is going back. There is nothing wrong with and they are great amps, but yesterday I stumbled across a used JCM2000 TSL122 while in the guitar shop. It is beat to shit but works and sounds good. Because it is so beaten up they are selling it to me for $175 (they sold for $2100 new). Their guitar tech is a friend of mine and he told me today that, if I can wait until the spring, he can redo the tolex and grill cloth for me (he already has the materials at home). The store also offers an extended warranty which only costs 4% of the purchase price, so for me it will be $7 per year. That will take care of any mechanical issues that might arise and they are the same company as Traynor amps so have plenty of amp experts on staff. It is a 2x12 100 watt combo, which is moronically loud for home use, but this model comes with a low power button that takes it down to 25 watts which is much more manageable. Apparently you can also put a patch cable into the effects loop and then use the effects controls as an extra master volume (would have to read more about that before trying it).

Thanks. When I was back in there today I double checked the price twice just to make sure I hadn't misread it the first couple of times! They actually sold for $2175 brand new before taxes so I am getting one hell of a good deal. The amp is from the year 2000 so is 16 years old but obviously works well because it has definitely been played!
Youtube videos are never a great way to figure out how something sounds but here are a couple anyway:
For the first little bit this guy plays at gain levels that I would never dream of using but he settles down part way through the video (from about the 3:30 mark onwards):

175, goddamn. To think I paid 1000 for a Dual Reverb head. (I did overpay btw.)
Used, heavily played rigs are the best, because the speakers and well broken in. Brand new amps almost never sound as good. Give me a floor model instead of something that's never been unboxed before.
I only watched the first clip, but that guy got some pretty good tones. I've never had a chance to really sit down and dial in a TSL. Been a long time since I've even been in front of one.

I can't wait to plug my LP into it tomorrow (the pickups aren't being done on my Tele until late January or early February so that guitar won't sound very good until then). Actually, what I am just as interested in hearing is how this amp will sound when playing slide. Right now I am using my Epi LP Custom for slide but am hoping to find an SG for a decent price ('61 Reissue, Derek Trucks, or a 2012-2013 Standard) and think that would sound righteous through this Marshall.

My recommendation is to trying pushing the clean channel into dirt for playing slide. I don't think the gain channels sound as good right at the breakup point. But I think that about all multi channel Marshalls.
I liked diming the clean channel volume on my DR more than I liked playing through the dirty channel. Though the TSL has much better dirty channels.

I just brought it home.
I am going to let it come to room temperature for a couple of hours before firing it up (it is cold here and the amp was in the trunk of my car so there is no way I am turning it on while the tubes are cold).
It is ratty, but not in nearly as bad a condition as I had first thought. I'll still get the grill cloth and tolex replaced in the spring, but it is fine until then. I'll take a picture or two later on and will post them here.
And it only cost me $175+tax ($197.75)! I also bought two years worth of the extended warranty ($14 for the two years) so the thing can blow up tonight for all I care as that warranty means that they will have to repair or replace it.

$175 for a Marshall??? Oh, you are so going to hell....you lucky rat bastid... Congrats! Yep, $175!!! I bought two years of the extended warranty (I can extend that every year for as long as I want to for only 4% of the purchase price, so $7 per year) so the total was $189 before taxes. That worked out to $213.57 out the door. They deducted that from the refund for the AC15 which was $676.87 so, in the end, I walked out of the store with a JCM2000 and had $463.30 refunded into my bank account! And here she is in this thread: guitartalk.freeforums.net/thread/723/new-me-amp-day
