Are those toasters humbuckers? No, the Rickenbacker Toasters are single coil. I'm not sure, but I think all of their pickups are single coils.

It’s what gives them their “jangle”. Our bass player uses an old 1975 Ric bass. It sounds awesome.

They have a look that could lead one to think they're humbuckers, but that doesn't mean they are. I do like their pickups though--a distinct sound. And you mentioned horseshoe pickups--I once played an old Rickenbacker lap still with one--loved the sound from that one

I can understand what would attract a guy to the 330 Fireglo. It's an incredibly pretty guitar. It's amazing what a difference the colour makes....I worked with a guy who showed me the 330 that he'd bought and happened to be in the trunk of his car that day. It was black, and something about the colour made it look oversize, awkward, and almost a caricature of a guitar. The Fireglo looks delicate by comparison.
By the way, I was looking at some Google images, and from what I could see, all of the newer 330's seem to be equipped with the Hi-Gain pickups (more conventional design with six exposed magnets on top), while the 330 12 string models all had Toasters. At one point when I was buying the Toasters for my Telecaster, I read some stuff that John Hall had written.....the very new Toasters are machine wound rather than hand-scatter-wound, are higher in output, and reputed not to sound as good. If the one your buddy's got is an older one, chances are it's got the superior pickups that older ones had.
Also, I just looked, and Rickenbacker's now supplying three different models of pickup in their guitars....Toasters, Hi-Gains, and Humbucking. They're all the same size and configuration which makes them interchangeable in newer and older guitars.

Those toasters are well loved--other pickup makers have their own versions.

It lived at my house for a year or more before I gave it back- he never missed it... The fireglo scheme is really nice looking. I liked how it looked but the bodies are a bit odd shaped and clunky
