On another forum I have been known to go on there are number of members who are absolutely 100% against shorts and/or hats all the time--no exceptions. Others are willing to allow exceptions. Some are open season. So while I have an inkling how this might go here--I present the hats & shorts-yea or nay poll.
Feel free to comment as well.

I know a band where the bandleader has asked all of the members who are balding to wear hats on stage....just an appearance thing so that they look younger and appeal to younger people. I told him that was a silly excuse.
The only time I’ve worn shorts on stage was at an outdoor picnic or outdoor dance and I can probably count the number of times on one hand in my 45+ years of playing.
Two years ago, two friends of mine asked me if I could fill in for their other guitar player at a Canada Day performance at a Long Term Care home. I asked what I should wear and was told a nice shirt or golf shirt and nice pants. I show up in a nice golf shirt and nicely pressed pair of long chinos, they show up wearing shorts, flip flop sandals, one had a golf shirt and the other a t-shirt. I looked at them and asked “WTF”? Even though this was July 1st, they said old people are always cold so they keep the A/C turned off. They were worried what I would wear if they told me shorts and short sleeved shirt! These guys were wearing what I wear while working in my yard and they were worried about what I would wear? I wasn’t too happy but the next few times I played with them I told them what I was wearing and told them not to make me feel overdressed. They dressed normally the few times I played with them after that but I don’t know how they dress when I don’t play with them.

Even though I have awful legs, I have worn shorts on stage mainly on outdoor summer gigs, or occasionally indoor if the club/pub was really hot. Never worn a hat.
One question for people is why do Americans wear those blooming huge hats indoors, whether on stage or not? I can understand outdoors in hot weather, but indoors? I was watching Willie Nelson & Friends on TV last night and loads of performers, all male, had them on. To us they look ridiculous.
Being the leader of my band, I don't ask people to wear particular clothing. Even if we play posh events, it's up to members what they wear
Only time we discussed it was at our reunion gig when a t-shirt manufacturer offered to make us some t-shirts to wear. We decided on a design and wore them for the gig. The t-shirt manufacturer set up a table and sold quite a few to the audience so they made their money back.

I'm sure not all the musicians wearing hats are American, but I'd tend to go with Infant on this one that they are trying to look younger. We wear hats sometimes. At Christmas Santa hats keep you warm when you are playing outside in the 15 F weather. My wife made some of cashmere and rabbit fur for us which are very warm. Usually towns want you to look festive anyway. But if you are ready to step on with us for a 3 hour set in the freezing rain without a hat, John, you are welcome. In summer we do don straw hats at outdoor gigs because I've played too many gigs in the direct sun at over 90 degrees and it can be cripplingly hot. One time the drummer, probably around 70 hearts old got so dehydrated that his leg cramped and he had to stand for the end of the set. I was afraid we'd would have to call an ambulance

There was someone called Kid Rock on with Willie and he looked young with long hair, but was wearing a hat for most of the time.
Outdoors is a different matter but inside? ?

I’ve got no problems with wearing a hat on stage in any situation. I think I may be biased because I don’t have any hair on top of my head. My hair falling out was the initial reason I started wearing one but there were a couple fringe benefits. One of those benefits was the bill of the hat shading overhead stage lighting and it also kept sweat out of my eyes. Shorts are a different story, if you were in a rock/blues band I think you would look pretty silly unless you were outside at some tiki bar on the beach, or something along those lines, to each his own I guess.

I voted for context mattering Some genres feature many players in shorts So no issues with me there That’s a genre thing I was once at a festival where the temperature was over 100 Ffor most of the day (It didn’t cool off until the sun was getting quite low. And even then it stayed hot) Some of the performers ( most actually) Wore shorts
Then there’s Angus Young, but that a costume
I have also seen pictures ofBb King in a suit with dress shorts
It doesn’t bother me unless they’re revealing

Hats? I have no problems with that, although some look goofy or worse But whatever
As for no hats inside-I understand some reasons for that, but mostly it seems to me to be just one of those things
I don’t wear hats often, but I have performed wearing what (& shorts) But in some contexts I would not

Short sleeves result in faster sunburns as the sun evaporates your sweat more quickly. 3- sweaty, bare arms get the guitar sticky and can eventually damage the finish. Of course you have to do what's right for yourself but I greatly prefer long everything if it is really hot and sunny on stage. That said if I am hanging out in the summer I am wearing shorts, just not on stage.

We don't wear lederhosen or anything like that when playing polkas, but a blue blazer and an olive wool crusher hat is generally enough to give the illusion you're at least trying to look German

In the 90 degree heat I feel gross no matter what I do anyway!

It was back in the 60s days of psychedelic paint and that lighting that made everything glow.
I painted my upper body and todger (penis) with this paint and went on stage at a club called Sands. I had a long coat on covering me, but whipped it off in the second set. The crowd seemed to love it, but the club manager didn't and we got banned for life from that chain of clubs

But did it get sunburned? If it had been outdoors, I would have put a hat on it Unless the stage lights were too bright! Would it be inappropriate to call that performance "ballsy"?

Maybe a bit too far--just a bit. Probably the thing that really put it over the line is that he painted "I'm with stupid" in luminous paint on his chest with an arrow pointing towards the club manager. Some guys just can't take a joke!

Never wear shorts.
Jeans, boots, a Stetson hat and a Keswick Dinner Jacket is the only acceptable attire in my view .. lol
I usually wear boots and a Stetson cattle crease even with a business suit because they are really comfortable and that's all I care about; has nothing to do with music and I don't like the "hat act" aspect of some country players always seems phony unless they are playing outside or something.

Hats are never going to be an issue for me because they give me claustrophobia. Personally, I think musicians wearing shorts on stage looks silly and totally unprofessional. YMMV.

Carhartts (again) and a knit cap doing a gig at the local Harley dealership a couple weeks ago, no shame. In my own defense, it is Alaska so it looks normal up here, stepped off a plane from Florida not 6 hours before the pic was taken Attachments:

Hat, yes. Shorts, no. I don't have pretty legs. I only wear shorts at home. Even though my hairline's receding, that's not the reason for a hat. I have fine, wispy hair and it becomes a mess if I just turn my head, never mind a light breeze. Sometimes a bandana.
