I don't have pretty legs. I only wear shorts at home. Thanks for THAT imagery (just kidding)

Even though my hairline's receding, that's not the reason for a hat. I have fine, wispy hair and it becomes a mess if I just turn my head, never mind a light breeze. Sometimes a bandana. I have thick hair--and it can become a mess for many reasons--including turning my head. Especially now since It's been about a year and a half since I had a hair cut.

My attire for gigs is usually a western shirt and black vest, jeans or khakis, and sometimes a black pork pie hat. At Christmas I'll wear a Santa suit. For jams and bar gigs, jeans and a t-shirt. I hardly ever wear shorts in real life so no shorts for me.

It's all contextual. I've got a buddy who plays in a band called Beach Patrol. If you didn't wear a Hawaiin shirt and shorts, you really weren't in the groove. They book the band with that in mind, and the crowd expects it. Their playlist reflects it, too. Hell, in 'straya, businessmen were shorts as a part of their two piece suit. Context. I've played in hats, in shorts, whatever the gig/venue/occasion calls for. Never say never. I do have a line, and probably would never go as far as Mr. Reardon. LOL The older I get, the less I respect the uniforms of our culture. Rebellious while still a bit respectful. If I played in a classy band like Die Bullen, I'd dress the part. My last gig (besides the barn jam last week, where we dressed pretty much the same.......).

Thank you, but as you said it is all contextual. We're not a rock band and we generally play historical music, so it would probably look very weird if we were playing a historical society annual dinner or a non-profit gala and we showed up in jeans and t-shirts, and if we did, it would be sure we wouldn't be hired back to their next annual dinner.

I just can't understand why people wear hats indoors. Outdoors in very hot or cold weather, then yes. But indoors? We don't do that over here, unless they are bands pretending to be Country singers

I also had a temporary job in a food preparation plant that had a lot of pipes & things sticking out in weird places--they made us wear hardhats while we worked (They supplied them)

If you play in an Army&Navy club or a Legion over here, they have a 'no hats' policy. The hard core clients will shout you down if you were a hat inside - I've seen it many times. A bit uncomfortable for those that wear hats to cover up their bald spot (I've played with a few of them).

I played a few legions up here in Kanuckistan and they will allow the band to wear hats on stage but they have to remove them when they leave the stage. When I went to see my former band mates on Friday night, they were all wearing shorts during the gig. It looked a little unprofessional to me for an indoor gig.

Well I've noted that guidance if I ever play a legion hall...

As I know it's mostly older people than myself who remark on it, or seem to care And hey--I'm okay with that. Although in my teens I took a tour of Parliament Hill in Ottawa, about half way through the tour guide asked me to take off my cap. (I hadn't even realized I was wearing it--but it was handy when I was outside as it was a very sunny day) I complied without comment.

That reminds me of a time when my wife and I were down in Pennsylvania and we took a tour of “Fallingwater”, a Frank Lloyd Wright designed house. We were told before entering to not touch anything. About halfway through the tour, I was getting tired and we were in this one room with a desk against the wall and the tour guide was speaking and looking at us all. Then he looked right at me, or should I say he GLARED at me and stopped mid sentence and looked at the desk, then back at me and the desk again. I then realized that I was leaning on the edge of the desk with the palm of my hand! As soon as I removed it, he continued from where he left off. Whoa, this guy took his job seriously!

We like FLW architecture and have taken in the Darwin Martin House and Graycliff near Buffalo. However, they aren’t anywhere near as nice as Fallingwater.

A few years ago there was a documentary about him (American Masters on PBS.). He was a very odd guy. They interviewed one person who had FLW decorate his house. They guy said years later sometimes he would show up unannounced to see if any vases or furniture had been moved and he would move them back

what’s really cool is that part of the living room is right above the creek and he designed the floor in such a way that a portion of it opens up to provide natural air cooling of the room from the breeze created by the running water. It’s quite beautiful.

Well our boater hats are retired for the season as of yesterday. I need to invest some time into freshening them up as a couple of them are not really stiff anymore and the ribbon on my band needs replacing because salt from the sweat has literally wicked through, discoloring the band. They get some serious use!
