About 10 years ago, I saw The Who live here in Hamilton. At one point, a roadie placed a music stand in front of Pete Townsend and we couldn’t understand why because they weren’t playing any new material that night. It was weird but I figured if PT used one in front of 10,000 people, I could use one in front of a couple of hundred. Could be lots of reasons for it too. I'm sure he knew how to play the songs but maybe he needed the key as a reference- or the lyrics at some point. Or maybe he had notes on a section that he wanted a certain way and sometimes forgot...

Exactly why I use a stand. Unlike professional musicians, I worked at a job for a living and had a house and family to take care of. My band mates and I never had time to memorize all of our songs. In my old band when we used to play 35-40 gigs a year and many of the songs became pretty much committed to memory but we had the music and lyrics in front of us, just in case, especially when we learned some new songs.

Our band has over 30 program lists in rotation wroth around 600 songs - it would be near impossible for me to attempt to learn all those chord changes

We’ve got about 120 R&R songs in our repertoire and maybe an additional 40 continental type songs for ethnic type events. (Polkas, tango, waltzes etc). The continental stuff is pretty easy to play as you can feel the chord progressions. However, some of them are sung and i need words in front of me.

Yeah those songs add up, especially as you get into the ethnic stuff. Heck, we probably have 40 Christmas and Hanukkah songs in our holiday books

When I play at church it isn't a regular rotation--or in the same lineup Sometimes someone different is leading and they want me to do something a certain way. Most of the time I have freedom to play it as I feel it--which I enjoy. But sometimes I have places to start & stop or certain rhythms, etc. And one time I play a song it's in one key, sometimes in another. Sand since we aren't really abel to rehearse much now--that also adds to our need for music stands. Although there are songs I don't really need the music for, but I still have it there.

A lot of our arrangements have fairly complex roadmaps of repeats and DS's. I could probably memorize them but were always playing different music

But if you'e played with them enough makes it easier.

We were together for 25 years and for the last 10 years we were gigging on average 35 times a year. We were so in tune with each other, we knew exactly what the other guy wanted to do.

Except for 3 years between our last band and our current one, the sax player has been in every band with me since grade 11 in high school...a total of 48 years. We’ve known each other since the age of 6 and I’m referred to as the “4th brother” (like the 5th Beatle) as I’ve known him longer than his youngest brother. We tend to think alike in the band as we’ve “ been there, done that”

Certainly rehearsing helps--as does individual practice--but I have also found some people are just easier to mesh with musically. Sometimes it just happens-soemtiems it doesn't. In my case i have had that happen with very little rehearsal. But I tend to listen to the others and make sure we're meshing together.

Sometimes it just happens-soemtiems it doesn't. Absolutely. As a rhythm guitar player I am extremely sensitive to the drummer. There have been some drummers where I gelled with the guy perfectly. They're have been others where I fought with the guy on stage to get the feel right and I couldn't play with them.

I always figure you wear the song better if you have the words memorized but when I went to record this one I realized that I only knew the words to the first verse had to write the rest of it down .. lol i.imgur.com/TkFK65C.jpg
