Back in Oct 2016, we played a memorial gig for one of our 60s bass players who had sadly succumbed to cancer in 2015. He had played with the Pieces for a while back at the end of the 60s and he had a part in suggesting the meet up in 2012, which led to the reunion. He was too ill to play with us at our reunion or subsequent gigs, but did manage to come to some.
Anyway, one of the countless old friends that came along was the drummer Henry Spinetti. For those of you who may not know him, Henry has worked with Katie Melua, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Jones, Bill Wyman, Pete Townsend, Roger Daltry, Labi Siffri, Mike Batt, Joan Armatrading, Andy Fairweather -Low,The Herd, Leo Sayer, Gerry Rafferty, including the single 'Baker Street' and I'm sure many others.
Henry was also a local lad, who had actually supported us way back in 1966. He was the drummer in a very young group. I think Henry was only about 15 then. He was also the drummer in Judas Jump, which our singer, Adrian, was in.
As we were 'headlining' this event, I had the chance to have chats with many people. I couldn't remember Henry, but he did know me. Adrian, Henry and myself were talking about the old days and the subject of him playing a couple that night came up. He said he would love to, so I showed him what we were planning to do. He fancied doing the old Jimmy Reed song, Baby What You Want Me to Do.
We were also going to have a go at the Freddie King song, Going Down. He said to me 'Great, last time I did that was with Eric'. I thought, no pressure then!!
Great drummer. He literally just sat down on the stool and didn't mess around with any of the bits and pieces
Incidentally the main part of the split screen was taken by another old friend from the 60s who sadly died suddenly in 2017
Henry was one of the multiple of drummers who played the Concert for George, back in 2002. See him to the right of Ringo
