Despite my thread a while ago about being done buying gear (yeah, that went out the window but I think it might actually be true now), I recently got rid of my Yamaha LL6 and picked up a 'lifer' acoustic - a limited edition Gibson Songwriter from the Gibson Custom Shop. Only 65 of these were produced for Canada's main gear retailer, although they do currently make a regular production 'Studio' version of the guitar. Mine was NOS, and had been sitting in a store for four years. They originally sold for $3599 before taxes, and this one was reduced to $2199. The originating store refused to transfer it to my local store, so I emailed the company president and he made it happen. The guitar has an Adirondack red spruce top with mahogany back and sides. It also has a beautifully streaked rosewood fretboard. Anyway, here is my new 'lifer' acoustic:

I would be afraid to own a high end Acoustic.. They should have discounted it a little more since you had to go to the President of the Company

I've never owned a high end acoustic either but decided to get one because A) I had the money and could spare it and B) because I cannot play acoustic worth a shit so spending money on a high end one would make me devote time to playing it. Because of work, family responsibilities, life, etc. I have barely played in months so will need to work my way back up again and figure I might as well do that on an acoustic.

Valid reasons all of them. There’s a reason high end acoustics are high end. The biggest one for me besides build quality is your more apt to pick it up if you know it’s not going to destroy your fingers if you play it for more then ten minutes. Same boat for me, work, responsibilities.......don’t play much these days. I retire in less then three years, might get a high end one in the stable while I can still afford it.

I'm busy dealing with Mum. A couple of weeks ago I came home from shopping to find her unconscious in the kitchen in a diabetic coma. Best the doctors in the hospital could figure was that she took her insulin, forgot she had done so, and took it again shortly afterwards which shot her blood sugar through the floor. She was in hospital for five days and one of the doctors told me that, although they cannot do definitive testing for 3-6 months because of the minor bleeding on her brain that resulted from her hitting her head when she fell, he is absolutely certain that she is in the early stages of Alzheimer's. Luckily, I went on holidays last week and do not go back to work until after Labour Day so I will be around the house a lot. Being off will also give me some time to get into playing, working my way back up, and using the new acoustic to do that.

Hopefully she recovers completely the fall. I have a dad in last stage Parkinson’s and just barely hanging on, you have a mom in early Alzheimer’s, all things aging sons and daughters face with their parents eventually I suppose. Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s are the worst. Watching the slow progression take my dad piece by piece is agonizing. Every time I leave after a visit I’m not sure if I will see him again. I feel for your mom, I don’t know much about Alzheimer’s except its a slow progression that takes the mind where Parkinson’s is more a physical thing affecting the mind in the last stages. Enjoy your time off as best ya can. That new geeter will take your mind off things.

Sorry to hear that man. And yeah, it sucks watching our parents get older and more infirm when there is nothing we can do to lessen the effects of whatever is wrong with them.

Nope. I threw my back out a few days ago so have been too stoned and in too much pain. But I am feeling better tonight and the case is right next to me so I'll be pulling the guitar out shortly!

Haven’t been playing but I have been building a new pedal board, I know, makes no sense does it. Still have a couple more pedals to go but it’s nearly there.
