As I mentioned in another thread, I sold my Vintage Modern 2266C and bought a JCM 800 2203 and a 2x12 cab from a friend of mine. We managed to meet up today so I've got the beast home now. The first letter in the serial number (S00151) points to this being an '84 model, provided I am reading the serial number correctly. But I thought there should be a model number too, which doesn't appear on the back panel of this one so I may be reading the serial number incorrectly. Whatever year it is from, this thing sounds glorious - but moronically loud!!! It does need new knobs, and he has replacements, but he forgot to bring them today. No big deal, I can get them later and put them on then. The cab is a PRS cab that he had new grill cloth put on (and matching cloth on the amp), and it contains two G12H-75 Creamback speakers. I got both the amp and the cab for $1400, so I am more than happy with the purchase. My apologies for the crappy picture, but my proper camera is refusing to recognize even brand new batteries as having any charge so I had to resort to using the camera on my cellphone. Here is my new rig:

From what I read your right. The jcm 800 was in production from 81-91. The “s” would indicate a 1984 model. How do ya like it??

It needs a cleaning with Deoxit, and that will determine whether new tubes are needed, but it is still awesome. The thing is moronically loud, but can be controlled using the master and pre-amp volumes along with the guitar's volume control. I am not getting power tube distortion, but even pre-amp distortion sounds good on this. The sound has a very 3-D quality to it (a poor description, but the only one that comes to mind).

I have a lot of experience with marshalls, my first one was a jcm 900 50w dual reverb, el 34’s, solid amp but with the 1960a cab I was using at the time my tone was to “glassy” if that makes any sense so I got rid of it. My next one which I had and gigged with for years and years was the jcm 900 dual mono-bloc 100/100, also loaded with el34’s. No pre-amp, just a pure power head so I wound up experimenting with several pre-amp units over the years. This amp had the greatest tube tone I ever heard. The el-34 tube is awesome but I have experimented with others but always went back. I found that with marshalls it’s best to stick with the tube it was designed for or just go to another amp. Like you said, both mine were ear splitting loud. I’ve played on a few jcm 800 series amps and they were awesome I their own way.. Making the amp deliver your tone all by itself with minimal effects or pedals overdriving things is the best way to get the most out of your marshall, I learned this from years of dicking with pedals and preamp effects processors. I just wanted to share my experience with them, your going to love this amp. It wasn’t love at first sight for me with marshalls but once you get the hang of them you will never go back.

I am considering attenuators. I want to use it as is for a little while before settling on an attenuator for it.

I picked up a Marshall cab yesterday, the 1960A model. I do not need a 4x12 for home use, but got it in good condition for $375 so couldn't pass it up. When I get it home (too big to fit in my car so a friend who works at the store is going to bring it home for me in his van next week) I will decide whether or not to keep it. If I do, I can sell the other cab. If I don't, I already know someone who wants it and has offered me $650 for it despite knowing what I paid for it. Another option is to take the two Creambacks out of my cab, swap them with two of the Greenbacks in the 4x12, and then sell my other cab with two Greenbacks in it (I'd still be able to sell it for more than I paid for the 4x12). If I do keep it, I'll have a nice Marshall half-stack for home use

The 1960a is what I had for years. You got the steal of a lifetime on it in my opinion.....congrats.

The 1960a is what I had for years. You got the steal of a lifetime on it in my opinion.....congrats. Every February the store I deal with has an inventory blowout sale a couple of weeks before they do their annual inventory count (their entire chain of 70+ stores has this sale). This year my local store had a few good deals, probably because they are moving locations to a stand alone store on the other side of the parking lot of the mall they are currently in and were selling stuff so that they didn't have to move it. After taxes, I got the cab for $423.75. I didn't bother lining up to get in there, but a friend was there at 5am so that he could snag an R8 for $2500. After he snagged the guitar, he grabbed the cab for me. I owe him lunch. Funnily enough, he doesn't like the R8 and is going to return it so he basically lined up to get the cab for me.
