I decided to start experimenting with pedals, mainly to goose my Marshall a little bit. The amp already has more distortion on tap than any reasonable human being could ever use but a boost or some overdrive for the clean channel doesn't hurt.
I was considering something in the Tube Screamer family and read a bunch of info over at the Marshall forum. A lot of people there seem to really like the Boss SD-1, especially with Marshall's JCM series amps. I used to have one of the Japanese made SD-1s but didn't like it with the amp I had at the time and sold it. But I searched around the online classifieds here and grabbed one tonight for $40.
I won't get a chance to try it out until later tonight, but I can already see this as being my first step down the rabbit hole because I also want a Joyo Sweet Baby (a clone of the Mad Professor Sweet Honey), an EHX Soul Food (I'll keep trying to find one at a decent price), and maybe a Boss OD-3 (widely regarded online as the best overdrive Boss has made).
Since my Marshall has good on board reverb I don't need a reverb pedal. The only other modulation pedals I might, maybe, want to grab are a delay pedal and a tremolo pedal but those are a ways down the line as I don't really use those effects. But if I am going to head down the rabbit hole and start putting together a small pedalboard I might as well grab those too eh?

Apart from drive/boost and reverb, I'd add delay, tremolo and or chorus. Maybe a phaser. The hardest part is which bunny to exclude down in that rabbit hole

Col, have you thought about mini pedals... Loads of them about and there are some really good clones. Not had any experience with minis but have a Joyo crunch overdrive which is really excellent for the price. Just thought if you go for minis, you can have more and they use up less real estate.

I still have a couple of those Joyo Ironman minis up on Kijiji. The Green Legend (Tubescreamer) and the Flanger, if you want minis.

The Boss SD-1 circuit is very close to the Tubescreamer circuit so I think I am good on that front. I also contacted a couple of people who had Bad Monkeys (another Tubescreamer circuit) but the guy with the SD-1 got back to me first.

I always loved tube screamers, the original and the new ones. In my metal days I used the boss mt-2 metal zone and a boss ge-7 equalizer which eliminated my need for compression, but we're talking over the top distortion. Once I started playing covers i never had a need for a distortion pedal and I experimented with everything, used a lot of boss and mxr stuff. The markets just flooded with stuff to experiment with now. Yep, the rabbit hole is much deeper then it used to be.

I considered an actual Tube Screamer but when the SD-1 circuit is so damned close to the Tube Screamer's circuit and they can be had used for $30-$40 it is a no brainer. A lot of tone snobs slag Boss pedals but there is a reason so many pros have them on their boards. And the Bad Monkey is apparently a very good Tube Screamer clone as well, with better tone controls. And they can also be had for about $40 if you are just a little patient. They used to be available at that price all the time but, once they were discontinued, the prices started to rise. I think I will grab the one that I found locally just to have another TS style option to play with.

Never tried an sd-1 myself but it makes sense that there are alternatives to choose from if you don't want to come off the hip for a tube screamer, I'm not sure but I think they re-issued the original. Back then there wasn't the selection there is now, the market is just flooded with boutique pedals of all kinds along with boss, dod, mxr, digitech, ibanez and on and on. If one company comes out with something really good it gets cloned almost immediately. I agree, a lot of people dis the boss pedals, I could never figure that one out. Sure, boss makes pedals that aren't that great but the make some really good ones to. I really love the boss chorus and delay pedals. I liked the mxr phase 90 as well. Through all the pedals I went thru over the years there was always one or two boss pedals in there. I used korg floor strobe tuners but always kept a boss analog tuner in my bag as well. I was continuously changing pedals, dabbled in the processor world, line-6, behringer, ADA, I used an mp-1 for a long time.. It was a lot of fun really, messing with pedals in the tone quest. As we all know, there is no substitute for a really good amp, without that no pedal is going to help.

True, and now that I have a really good amp it is the perfect time to start trying out pedals a little more seriously. And one of the good things about buying inexpensive ones is that you don't miss the little bit of money you have spent so, rather than selling something when your tastes gravitate to something else, you can just chuck it in a drawer until such time as your tastes gravitate back, which they are very likely to do. Or I could always grab a small pedalboard that fits 5-10 pedals and just leave them all on there so that all it takes to change flavours is the push of a button. But I expect that I will eventually settle on a small handful of pedals that I like - a couple of overdrives, a delay, a tremelo, and perhaps a looper - so will onlu need room for five or six pedals and the remainder can get comfortable in a drawer.

LOL, yeah, I never sold anything, there was a time when I could have built a house with all the pedals I had collected. I never thought getting a couple bucks for used pedals was worth the trouble so I just kept them.

When I had my white Marshall 100w, I set it for hot clean and used a Nady TD-1 that was probably Joyo... Had a 12ax7 in the stomp... Best damn stomp I've played through... I stopped playing for some years, taught college, and did sound stuff and damned if I know what I did with it... One of these days I;ll get another... Loved that stomp...
I had a Tubescreamer when they first came out... Damned if I'm sure what I did with that...
I must have lost my damn mind somewhere along the way....
