As you all know, I recently picked up a used Marshall JCM2000 TSL122. The amp has sounded great at lower volumes and last night I decided to crank up the master volume while keeping the gain knob turned down low. When the master hit about halfway up the dial I started to hear noises from my amp - crackling, hissing, etc. - and these got worse the higher the master was turned up. The noises were constant, not intermittent. When turning the master back down the noises decreased, and disappeared as soon as I got it under the halfway point on the dial. This is a three channel amp and this happened on both the clean and the crunch channels. I didn't bother checking the lead channel but am assuming that it would have had the same noises. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?
If it is a tube issue fair enough, I can purchase new ones (I might have to do some research on KT77s vs. EL34s first so that I can decide which to buy).
If it is something else, I will have to get the amp fixed. When I bought the amp I purchased a couple of years worth of the store/chain's extended warranty so they will repair any issues for free (I can extend that warranty year after year for as long as I am willing to pay for it...and since it is only costing me $7 per year I will do so for as long as I own the amp). The store that I bought it from is the same company as Traynor amps so, if it needs repairs, they have amp experts at their main facility which is where the amp will be sent for service. So I am not worried about the cost of having it repaired, or who will be doing the repairs, it will just be a minor inconvenience if it has to go out for repair.
I figured I might as well ask about this issue here before I take the amp back into the store because I won't be able to get back there until the end of the week (I was in there today and wish I had cranked the master last night).
So, does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?
