As most of you know, I was recently looking for a Marshall but couldn't find anything I wanted at a decent price so I bought a Vox AC15 instead. I was happy with the Vox (the second AC15 I have owned) and wasn't in the market for another amp but a couple of days ago I stumbled across a used Marshall JCM 2000 TSL 122 that was available for only $175 A 100 watt 2x12 is moronically loud for me as a home player but this model has a low power switch that takes it down to a more manageable 25 watts so that should help me to control this beast. Cosmetically it is a little rough (but nowhere near as bad as I had first thought) so I will probably have the grill cloth and tolex redone in the spring (a friend who is the guitar tech at the store has said that he has the materials at home and can do it for me). Mechanically it seems fine but, even if there are problems, I bought two years worth of the extended warranty from the store (4% of the purchase price, so $7 per year, and that can be extended for as long as I am willing to pay for it) so the thing can blow up for all I care because, if it does, the store has to repair or replace it (the store is the same company as Traynor amps so, if repairs are ever needed, there are plenty of experts in the company to handle them). And after returning the AC15 and having the cost of this amp subtracted from my refund, I still got almost $500 back on the deal. Anyway, this is the best deal that I have ever scored so I am happy as hell...this was a nice early Christmas present. Because of the "pics or it didn't happen" rule, here is a photo of my new amp:

That's freaking sweet, dude. I'd be shitting over just how many knobs there are, let alone the volume. Rock on out.

That's freaking sweet, dude. I'd be shitting over just how many knobs there are, let alone the volume. Rock on out. I prefer simplicity but the knobs actually make sense. Since there are three channels, there are knobs for all three. Once you break them down by channel, they are simple - gain, volume, bass, middle, and treble. There are extra knobs for reverb, presence, etc. but those are masters (ie. one set for the clean channel, and one set that controls both of the overdrive channels) so are fairly simple as well. The biggest thing I need to get used to is the presence control as I have never owned an amp with that before. And I have to say that I was shocked by how easy it was to control the volume at 2am with the low power switch engaged.

My friend the guitar tech has my Tele so I used my Trad last night. Tonight I will grab the Epi LP Custom to try some slide with this amp.
From my experimenting last night I think the crunch channel might sound righteous when used for slide.

Really I just wouldn't know what to do with 3 channels haha. So used to riding the knobs on my guitar I don't really care about having more than one channel. Have fun tonight, man. Hard not to with Marshall in da house.

I tried it with a slide last night and it sounded great. It was awesome on the clean channel and the crunch channel sounded good, although I only used that for a couple of minutes. I tried it on the lead channel and that also sounded awesome. I even dialed in levels of gain that no sane human being would ever use and, when the slide was on the strings, it sounded good and notes sustained forever. I dialed the gain back down and it still sounded great on that channel.
According to info online, there are vintage sounds to be found in this amp but it will take me a while to dial those in. Even without those, this amp delivers the thunder of the Gods..............

I'm pretty sure my combo is bulletproof. When I got it I had a power tube go out on me, and it didn't even take anything with it.

Throw some dirt on it... It'll be fine... Yeah I decided earlier to chuck some dirt on there so while at the guitar store earlier today I checked to see what they had in their used stock (nationwide, not just local). There wasn't much because things are being sold off during their Boxing Week sale but friends who work there will keep their eyes open for me. I considered a Tube Screamer, or clone, because that is a classic pedal to pair with a Marshall but I'm not sure I want that sound. I'll have to think on that some more. I will probably order a Joyo Sweet Baby which is a clone of the Mad professor Sweet Honey, but is apparently an extremely good clone for virtually no money ($37 new on Amazon). I will also consider a Boss BD-2 Blues Driver, a Boss OD-3 OverDrive, a Soul Food, and maybe an OCD (or the Joyo clone). Here is a video of the Sweet Baby for those who aren't familiar with it:

I have a 2203, but it's a combo. So I think that's like the 4203 or something like that.
I've got a blues driver and a soul food. Both are great pedals. The soul food is much better. Works great as a boost, has a great range of tonal color, and there is a ton of gain if you want it. Plus it sounds more way smoother than the bd-2. The gain structure on the soul food adds mids as you add gain. It takes my jcm 800 to jvm levels of gain, and the added mids gets it closer to how it sounds when the preamp gets working. Seriously great pedal to have. One of the best drives I have found. There is just so much that it adds to your sound.

I think what I will do is grab the Sweet Honey mentioned above and a Soul Food. Maybe I should start building a small pedalboard over the next little while - but mine would be primarily drive pedals. My amp has built in reverb, and it is very good, so I won't need a reverb pedal. A delay pedal might be an idea. But other than that all I would need would be drive pedals. Maybe a tremelo pedal? Can't really think of anything else.

I have come to like my Soul Food in front of my JTM45. I didn't when I first got the JTM, but as a cleanish boost it is perfect.

It's hands down my favorite pedal. Perfect for a Marshall. Also fattens up single coils nicely.

What is really cool is neck pup on a Lester and boost the Treble knob... SpankyStank...

What I do is I EQ off the neck instead of the bridge, and then roll tone off on the bridge to taste. The tone knob on my bridge pickup lives at about a 6. So my bridge sound is fat and a tad rolled off, like a cocked wah. And the neck just sounds really clear. No mud here!

Wow, talk about the thunder of the gods!!!
I just got a chance to turn the amp up when nobody else was home and holy shit, it sounded great.
I definitely have to buy overdrive pedals though. I have noise induced hearing loss (when hearing loud noises, and often when I am talking or listening to someone speak at a normal voice level, I get a sound in my ears that sounds like a blown speaker) and when I had the amp turned up halfway my ears were acting up big time. Granted, I was sitting less than five feet away from the amp so things might be different if I was listening to it from across the room. But still, since I don't want my hearing to get worse than it already is I think I will buy a pedal or two. I am going to order the Joyo Sweet Honey from Amazon and will search out a Soul Food from my retailer, Amazon, or the online classifieds.
But without a pedal this amp definitely delivers the thunder of the gods!!!
