Ok. so i mentioned this in the other thread, but since we have a whole sub forum for this type of thread, I'm going to slice it a bit finer.
the only things i know about leading people are "listen, be kind, be honest, encourage, acknowledge, and lead by example before words, and leave any drama at home unless it's stage drama for the show"
anyone have stuff to add?

Leadership of a band is tricky. I cannot function in a dictatorship, which is how a lot of bands end up. The best band I was in was rather democratic. We all chose the songs. It wasn't communist, because the majority usually ruled. We usually booked our own gigs. The late 70s, early 80s, was a rough time for Rock n Roll bands here. Disco caused havoc for a lot of bands. Clubs wanted dance bands, and we didn't fit the bill. The the "Urban Cowboy" country scene hit and we were still screwed. I was able to get side jobs sitting in with country bands because I knew how play Bluegrass, and it was very similar. However, my main band was stubborn, so we just kept playing Rock n Roll, and Blues.

As a bandleader, I prefer Franco's style to Mussolini's, but that's a fine point...
It's MY name on the line, and I have final say on everything. While I often rely on others to do their thing as they see fit, if I'm not pleased with the results, changes WILL be made to suit my whim.
Don't like it? I have two more guys just as good as you waiting for a call.
The long-term result of that approach is everything I was hoping for. I could not be more pleased with the sound of the Trio, and the Kings (actually a bit different situation, being students), are making leaps and bounds weekly.
As a sideman, I always end up as a sort of Vizier to the bandleader, not entirely sure why. I generally encourage them to be as ruthless as needed to fulfill their vision.

I guess i'm doing ok with teh band. The guys (with the new bass player Ron) are coming together to form a bunch of bandmates who help each other rather than simply a group of strangers who play music together. The drummer thinks i'm awesome cause i listen and the bassist thinks i'm awesome cause he get's a say. Of course, i just revealed the fundamental plan for success to them and so far everyone i've explained it to think's it's awesome. I don't have to be a dictator cause they willingly follow me. so i guess i am dictator by appointment even though they have opinions. And i listen to their opinions and consider them for they are two people who have brains and knowledge and a perspective i don't. final decisions seem to rest in my hands though and everyone seems to be happy with that. i am diggin it

Sounds like you have the right combination of people. Everybody getting along is crucial. Nothin to it but to do it now.

Dictator by appointment. Worked for Caesar, briefly. Worked for Augustus, completely. Be Augustus, not Caesar.

'Cult of personality'. That's the only way to do it. I never got anywhere though. The problem with democracy is that, in many cases, it's taken on the meaning of "My ignorance is as good as your knowledge" ( Asimov). In a business situation ( which this is) there has to be someone in charge or not much happens. Or you sort of meander down the trail. I have managed people in business ( and creative) situations before. Occasionally you have to be a benign despot when things bog down.
