Heard some odious snotty types say it's not real bass playing if it's not with the fingers...Bollocks! Just another way of striking the stings.

Either one for me, like Sid says. Depends on the sound I want.

We need a permanent bass player, so I'm trying to persuade a mate to take it up. Realistically how long do you think it would take a complete beginner to pick up a bass and learn simple bass lines to some tunes.?

Is it's easy coz yer only playing one string at a time. BOLLARDS! It is easy when you first pick it up to get going as opposed to playing chords on a guitar for the first time but you have to be able to play in time & have a knack for it. Can't say for sure without knowing the lad how he might go. Is he a Stranglers fan? If so I'd give him a good chance at getting it. Easy peasy bass lines can be taught very quickly. Shouldn't have much trouble there. Do enjoy the big blisters on the virgin fingers. Right scream...Feck! I remember when me digits were in a right state.

Done right, bass guitar isn't as easy as it sounds. It's easy if one just hammers away root notes, which drives me up a wall. I like a bass player who knows how to walk around the root.

Seems to me that pocket bass is one of the most difficult things to play... In my humble opinion.... My late bro was the best pocket player in this area. He could play all kinds of Star Trek psycho weird shit but on stage he stayed perfectly in the pocket and was amazing in simplicity. He played for a while in a badass funk band way back with horn players, the whole nine yards, and was like a nuke doing that but when he played NOT funk music, back in the pocket he went... I gained an appreciation and understanding of pocket just listening to him... Simple is sometimes the hardest freaking thing to do....correctly, that is...

Don't I just sound like a suck up to the mods bottom parts gimp eh? But in all seriousness it's a battle between beefing up the sound whilst being melodic & knowing when it's needed & when it's not. Then again there is the flip side that our dear departed Lemmy was expert in...Playing it like a guitar. Bass GUITAR...He was on to something. Can't express just how good it feels to blast a growly distorted bass out at high volume. Aye... Gives me the right feckin' horn. Oh yes. Pick & mix. Dependent on the song. Then kill the singer. Do it before it's too LATE!

Do it before it's too LATE! It is according to what your are playing... An old bandmate of mine played primarily Jacksons... He liked pointy ass guitars with the mandatory Floyd Rose... (I detest non-Beck whammy) One HELL of a player that would practice most of every waking moment on running through modal scales in 32nd notes....forward/backwards/sideways... Then hours on whammy technique. (he'd been doing that for decades). He was really phenomenal, albeit on stuff I didn't care about. He could learn/play any song/solo in minutes...even old ScallopNeck was fairly easy to him.. Anyway, he did a stint with a country band for a while (which dumbfounded my big ass). I dropped in to hear them play one night and was sitting with another bud... I told my bud I would bet beer there would be a divebomb before the current song was over... He bought our beer... The divebomb was about as tasteful I guess as a divebomb can be in a freaking country song but it was still a divebomb from hell.... Playing country music on a Floyd Rose equipped pointy head nuclear pup Jackson through a damn Marshall half stack...on about 8. Damn.... You just haven't lived until you've heard that shit.... hahahahaha

We need a permanent bass player, so I'm trying to persuade a mate to take it up. Realistically how long do you think it would take a complete beginner to pick up a bass and learn simple bass lines to some tunes.? Ya playin' with an awesome drummer? It can make a world of difference - if said newbie listens to enough different music - Motown, Ska, Blues, Rock, Pop and you get the idea that the Bass and percussion are locked in a dance of sorts.
Listen to 'Can't Understand' or 'I Walk Alone' by Los Lobos and realize the bass isn't playing what you might think would be the natural part - meaning following the lead player. Way, way too many Bass players are frustrated lead players. Totally the wrong thing to do. Find the groove - keep the groove - never give up the groove.
I played Bass for 30 years and miss it greatly - I'm a frustrated Bass player, but it's made me a very good rhythm player.
How long - it's like guitar - you can learn it fairly quickly, but the drummer is going to be his best friend.
