Hey.
for our first show i borrowed a friends guitar amp cab, and plugged it into my amp and set it on the opposite side of the stage next to the bass player. Ron said it probabaly saved our show since without it he wouldn't have heard my guitar. (not enough juice in the pa to plug more than a kick and vocals in)
So i'm going to have a cab made, but I have no idea what speaker to even use. I dont' want to spend alot, but i want an approximate sound of the one i've already got in my fender HRDx which is an eminence 125 i guess.
anyone have any recommendations?

How quickly do you need it?
I don't have any specific recommendations but L&M sells some really good Traynor cabs, as well as all kinds from other manufacturers, and they have their annual inventory blowout of used gear coming up sometime in the first two weeks of February (I want to say it is the first weekend but I think that last year's was the second weekend in February). You might want to wait so that you can save yourself a good chunk of cash.

well, we may have a new years gig, (not that I'll necessarily need it by then...)
My tech will be calling tomorrow to discuss the issue, and i was just kinda hoping to have some knowledge on the subject before i talked to him lol

Maybe borrow a cab or rent one from L&M for the show and then spend some time in January learning about speakers and cabs so that you can make a more knowledgeable purchase once the L&M blowout sale rolls around?
And although we've been spoiled with a complete lack of winter thus far, and record high temperatures Christmas Eve, we are going to get crapped on over the next two days. About half a foot (or more) of snow is on its way, followed by freezing rain. Sounds like a good time to hunker down indoors and learn about speakers and cabs!

I, too, suggest buying a cab instead of making one. look around for a "used" one. there's a lot of good/well taken care of used "gear" out there. just a thought.

I've already done some looking around locally and there isn't anything at all goign for cabs. there are also people already looking for them.... i can get the same speaker in my amp for about 90 bucks plus tax from amazon.ca. plus the cost of building a cab, or simply replacing a speaker in one my tech has lying around.... you never know. that doesn't sound like it would be all that expensive.... but, if he knows a good replacement speaker, i might be able to get the whole thing for less than a hundred bucks. that's what i'm hoping anyway

Their rental prices are cheap. Don't just check the London locations (there are two of them) for used stuff that you might want to buy, check nation wide as they will bring anything in you want even if it is on the opposite side of the country. But before you do anything, check with others about speakers, ohms, etc. as you can't simply add another speaker, you have to make sure it is the correct ohms. Or something like that. I can't even begin to pretend to understand that stuff.

my tech explained the ohmage and polarity and phase/parallel/series things to me the other day. and then i brought him my amp and the cab i was borrowing to make sure wouldn't eat the amp lol needs to be 8 ohms, and i'd like a 12" speaker. and has to be enough wattage to handle the output of a 40watt tube amp i'd as soon have one made cause all i need is a single speaker in a box. every cab i've ever seen has at least 2 speakers, sometimes 4 etc. this isn't a replacement for my speaker in my amp, it's an addition to give sound to the other side of the stage

cool Gooner thank you. cheapest one i saw was 68 pounds, which is nearly 2x that in dollars canadian? or more? i don't imagine it would be top of the line either, (or of suffiencent wattage). So i guess i'll see what my tech says it would cost to make one for me and compare it to what is around locally ish

You also have to figure out what kind of speaker you want in terms of breakup and headroom. Speaker efficiency I think it is called. But since I don't even know the correct term I'll let others explain it.

well, i'll be telling my tech a simple thing and let him figure out the complications.... like "i need a speaker like the one i got in my amp, in terms of what it does and sounds like, but i wanna do it on the cheap" lol. and i'll let him educate me hahahahahaaha however, geting the same speaker that is in my amp and sticking it in a cab won't hurt me none. the eminence is the cheapest speaker i looked at.... though I'm sure there are cheaper ones... if my tech can find me one that will do the job for 60-70 bucks i'd be really happy

sounds like you have a good amp tech. It's the same guy that wants to sponsor me by providing a pair of amps for me and having me shill for him. He should be decent at it if he has the time to do it

Not sure what you have as big chains over there but I'm pretty sure you can get a no name cab with a good speaker for a better price than having one made. But if you tech is trying to reel you in, you may get even better value. It does make sense to go for the same speaker as your amp if that's the sound you want or a speaker with a similar voice.

i hope so! if it doesn't sound good it will be a waste of money hahahahaa I think you are pretty lucky over in North America, most musical equipment is pretty cheap, over here a set of strings will set you back the equivalent of $10CAN.

well, prices are certainly higher in canada than in the US, even taking exchange into account.

There are handmade. Cabs for sale on Ebay for decent. Unfinished..no grille clothe. They look good to me and some are ported. Would make it more efficient than your amp cab.

Frank, what do they sound like? what speakers are in them?

No speakers. Just raw pine cabs. So light and resonant compared to composite or plywood. So you'd want to throw on a coat of poly sealer and rig a grille cloth or something. Or buy the metal basket covers. So you have that plus spesker invested. Don't know if that would suit.
