Check out edking.proboards.com. Some interesting reading. Edit - that board might be a bit fucked up because I’m reading a section called guitars and playing and it doesn’t show up in the link that I just posted. He’s talking about buying Strat for $150 and using it to record sweet home Alabama and other stuff like that. Says that you can’t duplicate the 1950s guitars Gibson or fender because they were made from old wood and none of the custom shop reproductions made now get anywhere near what the originals sound like and the originals sounded like that the day they were made. Also mentions that a 70s Strat is still going to sound like shit 50 years after it was made. Says that by the mid-60s companies were using green wood to make guitars whereas prior to that they had access to stock of wood that was 30 years old.

I haven't read it yet, but will check it out when I have time.

Yeah, that’s it. Thanks Larry.
There’s some interesting stuff buried in the various subsections. Just about interaction between the people and living through that all day by day.

i don't believe in tonewood. it's snake oil when talking about an electric guitar. an acoustic guitar, sure, ok. but an electric? i call bullshit. when someone can show me sound graphs that prove scientifically that there is a difference in tone, i'll believe it. i'll go even further and say if you can produce scientific proof that tonewood is real, i'll send you $ 500 american cash money.
ANY properly functioning electric guitar played through a good amp, and recorded properly, will sound good. in a blind test, none of you, no matter what you believe, can tell the difference.
this guy's studio is down in london ontario, so he's canadian. you can't blame this on america hahahaha

I like Glenn, I've watched quite a few of his vids. This is one of my favs because I used to be on talkbass (left due to numerous bans) and yeah, they do think like this:

As long as they sound good when I buy them that’s all I care about. Same goes for acoustics, no guarantee they gonna sound any better years later could sound worse. Take it up with Ed next time you see him and in the mean time send me $500 just in case yer wrong .. lol

I've always believed it doesn't matter when it comes to electric guitars. No one has shown me research data about the woods resident frequency is transferable to the pickups. I don't believe any of the "vintage" stuff makes it sound better. Again you can say you hear a difference, but like Glenn has pointed out numerous times (along with others) when we visual see something it has an influence on our choices. Many actually studies prove this and even though we know about it, no one can avoid it (again numerous studies.) If you want to spend $300 on PIO 60's capacitors have at it. Not a single person can hear tell me when they hear a recording, what guitar it is, what pickups are being used, what strings, if it has a vintage capacitor, if it bridge wrapped, or what wood the guitar is made out of.
However if you feel like you hear a difference that's all that matters..

I posted the link because there was some interesting stuff about what they went through during the band years and to some extent after that. The bit about old guitars and so on was just an aside.
