back in the spring i bought a d'angelico premier mini dc xt. the premier is the lower end of dangelico, but because this particular guitar is a sweetwater exclusive, they upgraded it with a set of seymour duncans, locking tuners, and a finish the rest of the premiers don't get. it comes with a nice gig bag, but i also bought a hard case for it. dangelico's case was still unavailable, so i bought a taylor case that fits perfectly. it's a really nice case. i sat down and played it for a couple hours just now. it sounds great through the mesa. however, a grilled cheez would sound good through that amp. it came with 10s on it, i don't know what brand, but they're stiff. i usually play 9s, so i'll be changing out these strings. the nut is cut a little high, consequently, the action is a little high too. the pots work well, but they are the taper i don't like. the pot (vol) does nothing, and then all at once, it cuts nearly everything. i can live with that for now though. the fret ends are perfection. well rounded and absolutely nothing sticking out. neck shape is a good size and shape for me, about like the one on my ar325. overall, i really like this guitar. with a couple of minor tweeks, it's gonna be nuts. aside from that, i think she's real purdy, and i could nt find any finish flaws, even with my glasses on.

so, i was playing this one yesterday. i think the bridge pickup is way too hot for this guitar, BUT it does allow me to do some cool feedback sounds. i'm not going to be in a hurry to swap it with something more appropriate. it's kinda fun like that. it's nothing at all like his birdland (obviously) but after fooling with my amp for about 3 minutes, it will do terrible ted sounds with ease. the tweed setting on my mesa makes golden honeyed sunshine spill from the cabinet. it will deliver growling rock and roll, but kill the vol on the guitar to the right spot, change my pick attack some, and it's like when the sun appears after a bad storm. chimey like a church bell, calling the rock and roll faithful to gather. the guitar is a little on the dark side. i'm not entirely sure what it is that makes it so. possibly the cap or the way it's wired in? maybe it's just the pick up? i don't have any idea. (yet) i can dial it out on the amp, so it's not any big deal. just something i noticed. my other guitars behave alot differently at the same settings. either way, the guitar does cover alot of ground in it's current configuration. if i bump the gain from the tweed setting to high gain, add some fuzz, it will do corrosion of conformity all day long. but can also do some rich, chimey clean sounds. it plays fantastic now that i have the action set where i like it. in the reviews, everyone complains about neck dive, but i don't have that issue with it. it has a good weight, on a guess, i'd say about 8 lbs. i'm pretty happy with it. i'm sitting here burning some mids with a little wax booger in there too. clutch's "the dragonfly" is playing on my stereo. it's 12:19 am hence, this post

Nice looking rig. I bought a set of nut slot files a few months ago and it was money well spent.

new years weekemd, i plugged in the d'angelico, and the bridge pick up was totally weak, but the middle position and neck position of the switch worked just fine. i called sweetwater, and they said they will pay for repairs as long as i provide a copy of the receipt. i dropped it off at my luthier yesterday. now the wait begins. my guess is the switch but we'll see. on the plus side, i love going there. everyone is super knowledgeable, very friendly, and they do a fantastic job.

I’ve bought a lot of gear from sweetwater, their customer service is great. Hopefully it’s an easy fix.

I’ve bought a lot of gear from sweetwater, their customer service is great. Hopefully it’s an easy fix. that's why i buy new gear from them exclusively. for used stuff i have reverb. you couldn't pay me to go into a guitar center, which we have about 5 miles from here. other than that we have one other music store here, but they only sell stuff i don't really want.

yesterday i got the mini back from the luthier. indeed, the problem was with the switch. they cleaned the contacts, and now it works fine. however, i had them work their magic on the rest of it, because a great set up makes for a great playing guitar. sweet water is paying for the repair.
they leveled the bridge pick up, beveled the fret ends, crowned and polished the frets, carved the saddles and the nut, adjusted the bridge and tail piece, and set the action and intonation. as has been the case with every other guitar i brought to them, it now almost plays by itself. i didnt get to play it yesterday because i had stuff going on. i took it out today and played for a few hours. i liked it before they messed with it, but now i like it even more. of course it plays even better, but correcting the bridge pick up and the switch improved the sound greatly. the bridge pick up is much more useable than before, and for what ever reason, using both pick ups sounds better on this guitar than any of my others. i am a happy camper

8 months later, i just want to re enforce my above post. every time i pull this guitar out of the case, i like it more. the switch is acting up again. sometimes i get both pick ups in the middle position, sometimes i don't. jiggling the switch or the bridge vol seems to bring it back. however, this is the only guitar i have that i use the middle position at all. for whatever reason, this guitar delivers some sounds that i love, but getting them requires a different approach than my other guitars, even going back into the past. i don't know how much the semi-hollowness is a factor in all of this. but the body being smaller than a 335 makes it alot more comfy to play on my couch. the neck is a little different than the other 2, but not so different as to be uncomfortable. it really is fun to play. usually when i have a consistent problem with a guitar, or if it requires some major repair, i lose interest in it, and i end up selling it after not playing it. not this one. every time i put it back in the case i find myself thinking how glad i am to have it. i'll eventually get it re wired to be sure i've gotten rid of the short, but i don't want to give it up for a month while they do the work. i'm in a funny place i've never been in before. i have 3 electrics that i love equally. they all have quite a bit of overlap, but they also all have some things they do that the others do not. spending a few minutes deciding which one to play is an enjoyable problem to have
