Over the years, a lot of personnel changes have taken place in bands. One of the more interesting scenes is where a band member switches instruments or suddenly assumes a frontman position. Most people have probably heard the story of Stewart Sutcliffe leaving The Beatles, and guitarist Paul McCartney drawing the short straw and having to become the bass player (which actually worked out pretty good!). It's not the only time something like this has happened though....Roger Daltrey used to be the lead guitar player in a band called The Detours, but when frequent disagreements led to their vocalist leaving the band, Daltrey assumed the singing duties and became the frontman, handing off the guitar duties to rhythm guitar player Pete Townsend (another one of those situations where things worked out fine when they became The Who). There are other times where fate has led to people changing instruments too.....Tom Petty was originally a bass player who became a guitar player/singer with The Heartbreakers, Mickey Dolenz was the Monkees drummer and became a frontman singer/guitar player, Joe Butler went from being Lovin' Spoonful's drummer to frontman singer, and Dave Grohl went from being Nirvana's drummer to the singer/guitarist in Foo Fighters.
Any other unforeseen personnel changes in bands that you can think of?

Phil Collins from drummer to frontman when Peter Gabriel left Genesis Not necessarily a step up--depending on what you like. It did become a different band though. Especially after Steve Hackett left--which also changed Mike Rutherford's role-as he took over more guitar stuff, and also bass--and live they had a second guitarist/bassist.

Other examples.
The Ramones--initially Joey Ramone was the drummer, and DeeDee the bass player, was the lead vocalist. But while DeeDee still sang some songs, and he sang back up vocals-wasn't working out as lead singer. So Joey got out from behind the drums, and became the lead singer. And as drummer they got a guitar player who became Tommy Ramone (& who later speed aside & was replaced by a real drummer-who said he had a difficult time learning Tommy's drum parts.)
After Jim Morrison died, Ray Manzarek still played keyboards, but he also took over on vocals--and they released three more albums, before calling it quits.
Musically it fits in with their stuff with Morrison, but the vocals & lyrics are not quite the same.

I think changes in vpcals can have a real impact in the character of a band. Case in point - The Doobie Brothers. With Tim Johnston as their front man doing most of the vocals, they were perceived as a hard rockin' band. When Johnston left the band for a while because of health issues and Michael McDonald went from being a backup vocalist to their main singer, the whole personality of the band changed. I have an appreciation of both styles, although I always think Johnston's songs represent their best work, but it's almost like listening to two separate bands.

I know people who refer to Michael McDonald as the guy who ruined the Doobie Brothers I can’t say I disagree but then a lot of people liked that period for them but it wasn’t the Doobie Brothers to me

I can’t believe I left out the Yardbirds When the bass player, Paul Samwell Smith left to focus on producing, the plan was for guitarist Chris Dreja to switch to bass (which fulfills the thread subject) At the same time they added Jimmy Page. They had some live shows set up & Page played bass for a while, to give Dreja time to learn the bass parts ( which also counts)

One thing I've recalled recently is a change of personnel in one of the Rolling Stones songs. I can't remember what prompted it or why Bill Wyman wasn't available, but when the Stones recorded Jumpin' Jack Flash, the bass track was done by Keith Richards. Listening to it, I think he did a fairly credible job, coming up was a bass line that's interesting and memorable. He was also the bass player on Sympathy For The Devil.
Somewhere online, I've heard a story recounted that involved a bunch of well-known players getting together. Apparently both guitar position were already claimed by two other top players, so Keith decided to be the bass player before a couple of other people who were probably very qualified and might have been a more logical choice. I guess Keef doesn't mind slumming when he has to, lol.
