I'm really offended by the unsolicited promotional emails sent by other guitar forums owned by The Gear Page. I don't give a flying fuck about the guitar picks you're promoting, and I've never given you permission to spam me with advertising for things I don't want. (I'm looking at you TDPRI and My Les Paul)
To the people responsible.....Your greed is showing. Why don't you guys have a little class and stop this shit?

Spellcaster- can you change your account profile settings?

Or just click on any emails from them as phishing.

I looked earlier on TDPRI and while you can turn some off, you still seem to get their 'promotional' emails. Like this place, you can't delete your account either, without messaging admin people. I just mark them as spam

Ya, I just marked them all as spam and they go to my junk mail. It’s usually for contests to win guitars but the contests are only open to US residents.

I guess I'm not subscribed to any of their forums because I don't get any spam from them. Spellcaster- can you change your account profile settings? In all cases, except My Les Paul, there's a an unsubscribe option at the bottom of the email which takes you to your profile settings. Although, in every case, I had not opted to receive SPAM emails from the forum, I freshened everything just to make sure they're current. In the case of My Les Paul (which I never visit anyway), I'll have to look in my profile for a way to opt out. If there isn't one, I'll just delete my account there.
This is the first time I've been inundated with SPAM from the forums, but I foresee this as a taste of things to come. It's really annoying to me....Not just because it's junk email I have to sort through, but it displays a greed that was never apparent before......The forums have legitimate ways to try to generate income, from forum user subscriptions, vendor subscriptions, and display advertising. I'm offended by this newest ploy that's only been apparent since the Gear Talk assholes have taken over. This kind of shit never happened when Chris was at the helm, and I really miss him.

I’m surprised that you are just starting to receive these. I’ve been getting them for years. Just mark them as spam and they will disappear from your mailbox. Deleting your account is a drastic measure for something that can be controlled with a spam filter. Then you can set up your email to empty the spam folder every week or two. If you delete your account, then you just have to sign up again if you want to respond to something and then the whole cycle starts again.

Deleting your account is a drastic measure for something that can be controlled with a spam filter. Then you can set up your email to empty the spam folder every week or two. If you delete your account, then you just have to sign up again if you want to respond to something and then the whole cycle starts again. One of the drawbacks with the email program I'm using is that there isn't a way to block emails from a particular sender or set up a permanent divert-to-SPAM folder. The people that developed the email program suggest that I'd have to contact Shaw, my internet provider to do this, and Shaw disclaims any ability to do it....Suggesting I should do it with my email program - A chicken and egg situation of passing the buck. The main appeal in staying with the Mailbird program is that it's affiliated with Mozilla Firefox, and I can get a vocal notification on my browser when mail comes in.
If you've been getting these SPAM emails for a long period of time, I'm guessing that some idiot that administrates the forum has decided to bypass the fact that I specifically did not check the boxes to receive promo emails because it's never happened to me before. As I said, I just went through my profiles in the -Talk forums and ensured that the boxes to receive promo emails aren't checked. If I continue to get SPAM emails from those forums, I'll just delete my accounts....They're not that important to me, and it's the only way to fight back if they insist on SPAMming me.
Frankly, I haven't logged into my My Les Paul account in years, so if it gets deleted, I won't miss it, and I'll never go back to The Gear Page. I occasionally visit TDPRI and Squier Talk, but my forum activity overall is a fraction of what it used to be. Gretsch Talk just isn't that interesting to me, and the guys on Strat Talk were so shitty to me the last time that I visited there that I'll never be back.

Do you have a hotmail or gmail account? If not, get one as they are free. Then change all your forum emails to this new account and you can mark these things as spam. In fact, start the account and you can just leave it as a “spam” folder and whenever someplace requests an email address, you can use this account so that you don’t have to receive this shit.
Look, I remember you deleting your account on TDPRI and you’ve gone back. You did the same thing here and you’ve come back. Deleting your accounts because of minor annoyances is a bit drastic in my mind, but then again, you aren’t me and I’m not you. I would prefer that you look at other options before doing anything drastic. Just my 2 cents buddy.

I have a gmail account, but it's been hacked twice so I don't use it. I prefer to stay with Mailbird because it gives me audio notifications that emails have arrived and I haven't been able to find anything else that does that.
I'm not sure where you're getting me deleting my TDPRI account from. I was banned once for a week because the new owners took offense to something I said, but I've never quit and gone back. This is the only forum that I've left and then decided to come back and try it again. I'm pissed off enough at Strat Talk that I considered closing my account a year ago, but just closing the door and not going back has been sufficient.
I just don't want to give the administrators of the other forums that are now controlled by The Gear Page any openings to SPAM me. I can only assume that's why I suddenly started getting emails flogging guitar picks when I specifically did not check the boxes agreeing to personal emails, other than PM's from other members. If they persist, I will be gone from those forums. I recognize that there's no way to shut off the TDPRI notifications regarding their yearly membership promotions, but at least they're offering an opportunity to win a guitar if the member chooses to participate. This latest spew of emails about guitar picks is just a way for the forums to make a commission if I buy picks, and I'm not interested in lining their pockets. I'm still nursing a grudge about the cavalier way they went about shutting down forums like AxeTalk and GibsonTalk.

Somewhere in the fine print you probably agreed to it. I've been a member of most of those forums for many years. however, I don't frequent them nearly as much as I did in years past. there are new members, new attitudes, and the same old subjects/same old questions. so, why go back ?

I just looked and can't see it. Do you have to use Google Chrome to utilize it? My previous landlord, when he heard my computer announcing "You have email" using my Mailbird program and Firefox, tried to find a way to make gmail do it on his phone but it didn't work for him.

All of my email accounts chime when I get an email. I’ve got bell mail, Hotmail and gmail. For the last year I’ve been using my gmail account if I have to give an email address when signing up to something.
Ken, I apologize for what I said about you leaving TDPRI, but I seem to recall you saying something about leaving them because they suspended your account or reprimanded you for something. Like I said, use Gmail or Hotmail for all your non-personal signups and then they can send you all the spam in the world….you can just leave it there and not bother with it. And then, who cares if they hack it!

John, just out of curiosity, where on Gmail do you turn the audio alert on? You may have to activate it on your computer. Windows 10, if I remember correctly? Type 'notifications' into your search bar and open it. Scroll down to 'get notifications from these senders' and check 'mail' on. Click on mail and check 'play a sound when notification comes'. Hope that this helps.

There's almost no chance anything legit comes in there. Ready to set up and forget about it.

I don't get any spam from My Les Paul. I do get some from entering giveaways, but you can usually opt out of those when you enter, or later.
I haven't been to My Les Paul in years though.
Maybe they changed things after I stopped going there.

It should. If not, type in 'sound notification' instead and see where that takes you? I tried it. I need to go in via the Start menu and type in "System sounds". There's a process that lets you customize the type of audio notification. The bad news is that it doesn't work with Mailbird. I'd have to scrap my email program and adopt a different email program, which means I'd lose all my current email files and have to figure out a way to transfer all my contact's addresses. It seems complicated and maybe beyond my ability to perform. The only email program on the list that I've used before is Thunderbird, which really sucked. I think I'll stay with what I have.

I actually turn mine off on the desktop as it's a pain
I do have notification sounds with gmail on my iphone. Should be similar on android
On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app . In the top left, tap Menu Settings . Select your account. Under 'Notifications', tap Notification sounds. Tap Email or Chat and spaces. ... Choose the sound you want to use. To turn off notification sounds, tap None.

I'm surprised he had enough cash to buy forums like TGP, TDPRI, etc. I do know that he runs a forum for the deaf that apparently gets huge traffic.
