I was shocked and saddened today to hear that Charlie Watts has died. He always had my respect as a great musician, plus being the anchor of the Rolling Stones. I admired the fact that he was one of the classy guys who didn't fall into the trap of substance abuse that was the downfall of some of his bandmates and was a steadfast dependable guy who never let the band down and was a part of one of the best backlines in rock and roll. He'll be missed.

Yeah, Charlie was open that he had just as much fun as the other guys. He just kept most of it out of the public eye.

They've replaced other members over the years.

Yes they have.
There’s something about Keith saying they couldn’t go on without Charlie and he also said they’d keep going until one of them dropped dead but on the other hand they already had a sub in for some upcoming tour and guys like them never know when to quit so probably maybe do the tour they have set up for the fall.

At least they aren’t tied to some schtick like having to wear school boy shorts into their declining years like that cretin in ACDC.. lol

I've heard a suggestion that now that the band's down to two original members, it's more like a tribute band than the real McCoy. Yeah, I know Ron Wood has been around for a while, but somehow he's never seemed like a true part of the band, and the decision to hire a bass player who's more of a hired gun than a formal member of the band is just weird. In my mind, the Rolling Stones now consists basically of Mick and Keith, but, being out-numbered by relative newcomers, the band seems like it's dead but just hasn't fallen over yet.

As I recall, Bill packed it in and opened a fish&chip shop so they pretty much had to get another bass player.
Sad about Charlie but he had a good life or at least good success in life and 80 is a good run.
That’s the way it is.

Charlie had a good run and a great career, he was a legend and I hate to see him go. No doubt in my mind they will continue. I always thought Keith would be the first one.

I heard this last night. Very sad indeed. Mick and Keef are actually the only original members of the band as Charlie joined them in ‘63. I think this may be their final tour.

Too soon? A lot of good Keef memes…with global warming, I wonder what kind of world we are going to leave him?

I wonder what kind of odds are being given on which of the last two pegs out first. I think Jagger was probably better maintained over the years than Richards. Keith is a good player but I don’t think he’s crossroads material so he may not have the deal with the devil that would see him through.

Well condolences to Charlie's family & friends.
Probably see a bunch more of this over the next few years. Sadly.

Do you think that rock n' roll will be officially declared dead when Keith goes?

Inevitably.
But when artists like Mr Watts (RIP, sir) die at 80, I celebrate their life more than mourn their death. I will really be saddened the loss of Jimmy, Pete T, Brian M, etc - who have left great bodies of work that we can still enjoy. Nearly anyone on the planet would have loved to have their ride (Hugh Hefner excepted??).
It's the death of guys like Eddie, Tom P, Prince - artists who've gone far too soon, IMO - that really bites. They still had things to say. That is our loss.
