I thought this could be interesting to share--whether you heard it or not.
I'm starting with something I read written by a music store employee...
Customer: I dunno who to talk to.
Salesman: Whadda you want?
Customer: I dunno.
Salesman: Talk to him (Indicates other salesman)

One thing I wish I would hear more often is, “Can I help you?”. When I actually want to buy something I always have to hunt down a salesperson. It might be an age thing. They are usually 40 years younger than me and seem surprised that I can actually play guitar and may even change the settings on an amp to find my tone.

I always find it interesting when parents are buying their kids first instruments, like violins, etc and pointedly ask the sales person if the $100 model is going to be a great player. How the salesman answers is always very telling. Sometimes they don't want to be bothered and simply say it is a great instrument to get the easy sale. Sometimes they try to upsell the parent to the next model. But then occasionally you get the guy who is actually a player and he tries to tell them that there are significant quality differences. Then again, most parents don't care about the quality for a 4th grader. They don't know if they will stick with it anyway...

Salesman is on the phone...
Salesman: Sorry, there's no way to make an estimate over the phone.
Customer: I don't want an estimate, I just want to know how much it will cost to get it fixed.

I don't find that to be the case with the staff at Cosmo or the local L&M stores that I go to. They are helpful when needed and leave you alone if it looks like you just want to try some gear by yourself. Even at Steve's on Queen Street in Toronto where some of the staff would'nt look out of place in a punk band I haven't noticed any age gap awkwardness and generlly have good time talking to them for a few minutes.

Most of my experiences have been good. The only times I have had issues finding a salesperson, help, etc, has been when they were busier than normal. Which unfortunately doesn't happen much anymore, unless there's a big sale. But I sued to avoid one store on Saturdays, unless I had no other option--they were too crowded & parking was difficult.

I haven`t been in a music store since the Covid thing started. Yet, my impression of music stores is the same as any other store. If they know you as a well heeled familiar customer, you get extra attention. If you`re unfamiliar to them, you get service when the well heeled guy they know isn`t in the store. It`s just economics, nothing personal.
As I progress in age, I have noticed however, that some sales reps must be under the impression that gray hair and a discerning stare that cuts through sales bullshit, isn`t worth their time.
One of the guys I talk with in my local store has been doing the music store thing for 26 years. He said to me that the whole experience has changed. He rarely has to sell anything anymore, he merely points out in the store, where to find what the customer is looking for, as people now know what they are looking for before they arrive.

“We don’t have one out here so I’ll check in the back”. Always wanted to check out “the back”. That was how I got my fretless bass. they had a MIM Fender fretless J Bass I had looked at before, that was around for quite a while & there was a sale--and sometimes they drop prices on that stuff--but when I got there it was gone. When they asked if they could help me, I mentioned the bass--so they searched for other ones--nothing. they found an Ibanez SR500F--which I had really wanted to try as I love the Soundgear basses. According to the Ibanez website they didn't sell those in Canada. So I was interested--but tried not to show my eagerness So sometimes checking in the back is a good thing...

“We don’t have one out here so I’ll check in the back”. Always wanted to check out “the back”. I got to go in the back room once. however, before I did, the owner asked if my heart was in good condition. what ? he opened the case of a pristine 1958 Gretsch 6120 hollowbody. it was perfect ! I was afraid to touch it. so, I just let it lay in the case. I knew I couldn't afford it and I didn't want to be responsible for causing any damage to it.

years ago there was a shop that I used to go to. the owner would always remind you, "be careful your belt buckle doesn't scratch the back of the guitar".
