Out washing the cars this morning when I started hearing the rumble of 4 Merlin aircraft engines….yup, the Lancaster was out flying around today. It’s one of only two that are still flying, the other one is in the UK. What a glorious sound it makes….I can’t imagine how loud a squadron of these would be. Sorry about the poor quality as the pic was taken fully zoomed in on my phone and it’s also quite hazy outside.

Great aircraft. Funny enough, I watched a documentary about it last week. It evolved from the 2 engine Manchester Bomber, which was underpowered. As soon as they put 4 engines on, it turned it into the great aircraft. I went inside the RAF one, years ago when I was in the RAF, working on recruiting. It was on static display. RAF Lancaster

RAF LancasterWe have the Warplane Heritage Museum here in Hamilton and so we get to see a lot of the old Warplane flying over head. One can book a ride on any of the planes although some of them are expensive, with the Lancaster topping off at $3600 for a 1 hour flight! Apparently, the Lancaster is pretty much booked for the rest of the season as the lockdown temporarily halted flights for over a year. www.warplane.com/aircraft/flights/buy.aspxIn 2014, the Canadian Lancaster flew over to Britain to help celebrate the Battle of Britain memorial. They filmed a documentary “Reunion of Giants” which was very interesting. Here is a trailer for the film. I may have mentioned to John in the past that the uncle of a former co-worker of mine, flew a Lancaster in WW2 and for his 90th birthday (about 12 yrs ago), the family bought him a flight on the plane. He showed up with log books from the war and sat down and shared them with the current pilots. Then when they took him up, they let him take the controls for a couple of minutes and fly the plane. When they landed, my coworker said that everyone was in tears, the family, the uncle and even some of the pilots. Everyone was so happy that they gave this old veteran such a memorable gift. He passed away a few years ago and the local news aired some video of that day. It was an incredible story.

Don't think it was this documentary, but one done by a UK, probably the BBC, channel. You would be lucky to get a flight on the UK one, because it's operated by the RAF.
