Back with another 5 best & 5 worst list--this time--basses.
So the Fender Precision bass--so named for the fact it had frets so you could play the right notes with Precision, wasn't the first electric bass or even the first soldibody electric bass, or first fretted bass.
But it was the first commercially successful one...
Here's the list
5 best things:
1-It's place in history-without the P-Bass some iconic songs may have come out differently, and while others did produce electric fretted basses, they had short comings the P-Bass didd;'t--so sure, if Leo Fender hadn't come up with the P-Bass, someone would have made something else. But would it have been as successful? would music have been different? etc, etc, etc.
2-Simple to use--straightforward.
3-Well thought out-the scale length, the pickup placement, etc, they all make sense.
4-The shape--it prefigured the Strat--and brought an iconic shape int he bass & guitar world. And it's main advantage wasn't looks, but comfort.
5-They sound cool.
5 Worst-
1-I don't always like the neck on them.
2-While the frets are good idea overall---I prefer playing fretless bass--and while fretless P-Basses do exist, they are a contradiction in terms.
3-Less variety in sounds due to one pick up (Although it is hum cancelling--which is cool)
4-They can be bulky & heavy (Although less bulky than a double bass-but I mean in comparison to alternative options available today)
5-Everybody has one, so you stand out less.
Okay--some nitpicking, but overall I like P-Basses, though I don't have one--and the fact that I snuck a 6th best thing about P-Basses into the 5 worst things list says something.
And the fret thing really could be on the 5 best things list.
SO now i's your turn.
