A little while ago I decided to end my Marshall moratorium and go back to my favourite amp maker. I bought a used Marshall DSL40CR (the new version) and liked it well enough, but never got to hear it at its best because there were some technical issues. Luckily it came with a warranty so I sent it to Yorkville Sound (same company as Traynor amps for the non-Canadians here). They haven't fixed it yet because they are facing a big backlog due to Covid. In the meantime, I bought a DSL100HR and a Marshall 1936 cab. It turned out that the used DSL I had bought was actually the old version, not the new one we had thought it was so I didn't take it. Luckily, a friend who works at the store found me a used JVM210H for the same price. We were told it had cosmetic issues, but it was near mint (picture below). I then decided to return the 2x12 1936 and get a 1960A 4x12. So that is where things stand - I have the JVM and the new cab should arrive in a couple of days. But I still own the DSL40CR and cannot decide what to do when it comes back from repair. Should I: 1) Return it for a refund. 2) Keep it and sell it privately (might make a small profit, but I would need to check my purchase price to figure that out). 3) Just keep it as a second amp. I only play at home and have no need for a second amp, but the money is already gone so it isn't like I'd be missing the cash although I would appreciate the amount being credited back to my credit card. I really can't decide what to do. Here is the JVM that we were told was in 5/10 cosmetic condition:

If you don't need it, return it. Save the hassle of selling for a few bucks. Should see if you can just do it while it's in the shop.

I'm inclined to keep it as an alternative--because that can be fun--but if it really wouldn't get used returning it makes sense.

If you can get a complete refund, then that's what I would go for. However, if you can afford to keep it and have room, that's good as well.

I'd return it too- if down the line you really want a second amp just buy one- maybe it will be the same one and maybe it will be something completely different

I'd also return it for refund, if possible. In your situation, I'd want something in a second amp significantly different from your primary amp. I like to have a variety of tones available and readily at hand - that means more guitars, and of course more amps, more pedals (until ............. Kemper LOL).

@colchar, was it in for repair before the first 30 days? Ask the manager to put the money towards your new purchase ( JVM) It really doesn't matter if the repair ticket is yours or L&M's. The amp still needs to be repaired.

The amp still needs to be repaired. Yeah it went in for repair within ten days so I would get a full refund. I've already bought both the JVM and the new cab, so those are paid for. I'm not in any rush for the money, but if it is still sitting there by the end of the month I am going to tell them to switch the repair ticket to their name and to refund my money. the amp was sent in at the end of May, so waiting until the end of July is more than reasonable on my part.

Having something different is a good point. Yeah, that’s where I’m at. Something Fendery or Voxey or Dumble-ish or whatever floats yer boat, possibly at much lower 5-20W home cranker.

I think something from Fender or Traynor. I just had an AC30, and have British tones covered with the Marshall so a Fender or Traynor would make a nice change. And yeah you're right, a 5-20 watter would be smart. Although I would probably get a combo, because I have traditionally preferred them, a cool option would be the Traynor Dark Horse. If I set up an A/B type connector (or whatever type allows you to run two heads into one cab), I could run it through the Marshall cab. I bet that little thing would sound glorious through a 4x12.

I'd recommend a Mesa TA15 for a second amp. Lots of variety. You get Vox, Tweed and Marshally tones. And power scaling from 25 to 5 (SE) watts. Head only and manufacture discontinued though. Mines a keeper bigtime.

a cool option would be the Traynor Dark Horse. I have the IronHorse (EL34. 18/40 w) that, to me, is the perfect amp. Nice cleans and good crunch. It's my second one after regrettably selling my first. I've heard good things about the DarkHorse as well (6L6. 7/15w). Roryfan had one for sale a while back. Not sure if he sold it or just pulled the ad. Heck, even the 25w QuarterHorse (SS) floor pedal amp has a good sound. Especially through a big cab.

I did the return and got the refund.
As I said, I don't have any need for a second amp right now but if a good deal on something (likely a combo) comes up I'll snag it. Otherwise, I can easily ride the JVM.
