I just wanted to make a little announcement. I have decided to create a sub-forum here for political discussions (I will do so later today).
This came about due to the political section on a Canadian guitar forum being nuked by the site's new owners. Some of the members still wanted a place to discuss politics, so I invited them here. They are all guitar players and good guys.
Because political discussions can become heated and/or offend some people I have decided to limit access to the new section. If anyone wants to participate there they will have to ask for access (nobody will be denied access, you just need to ask before it is granted so that that section stays invisible to the larger forum community). Once anyone has requested access they accept that they might be offended by some of the stuff being discussed. If they decide they don't like it, they are free to leave that section of the forum. But please do not report posts that you disagree with or that offend you, as doing so will accomplish nothing other than to irritate the mods. And as you all know, those of us in charge like to do as little as possible around here!
The new section will be pretty much a free-for-all, with obvious limits (ie. no outright racism, threats of violence, porn, etc.). It will not be actively moderated, and I don't expect the other mods to bother themselves with it unless they want to as I wouldn't want to put it on their shoulders. Any moderation in there will be my responsibility, and you all know how lazy I am.
We're all adults here so hopefully this will go smoothly.

I have created the new section, but cannot figure out how to make it visible but not allow access unless a member requests it. So like every other technical thing I try to do here, I fucked it up (for those who weren't around, when this place was created I managed to perma-ban one of the mods!). Hopefully one of the other mods will know how to do it. If not, I'll contact Edro and ask him to take care of it for me.

This is an interesting move into an area most forums seem to avoid. Congratulations on progressive thinking. Hopefully, all will go according to plan. You can expect a PM from me requesting access. I'm not sure I'll be a very active participant, but I think it'll make for some interesting reading.

That way it won't shit up the rest of the forum.

If you go into 'admin' then 'structure' you might be able to see that it is there and then fix whatever I did that is keeping it inaccessible. You should have all the same permissions that I do. I am thinking that the best thing to do is for me to create an announcement to let people know it exists, but otherwise keep it completely hidden. Anyone who requests access will be given a link that will get them there, but nobody else will see it. Hopefully I'll have it all sorted in the next 24hrs.

I'm thinking that Bill and I should probably have access just in case we need to get in for some reason.

I’m a little worried that this could affect the dynamic that we have here. Right now, we are all very friendly with each other but once people start hearing political views that don’t mesh with their own, we’ll start losing the few members that we have. I have unfriended many people on Facebook who were posting political garbage and unproven theories.
If I had my “druthers”, I would “druther” be locked out.
Thank you

I was able to get the 3 of us listed as mods, but I still couldn't get in. however, I haven't tried since your "ineptitude". I think we should call edro.
edit: nope, still can't get in.

On the other forum where we had a political section there was the odd scuffle that carried over to the main board but those were the exception rather than the rule. A lot of us could be arguing with someone rather vociferously in a political thread, and two minutes later be talking about amps as if no argument was happening elsewhere.

Don’t worry about it to much, before this thing is uncorked there will be a lot of safety’s in place (ie visibility, membership etc...) and the board can disappear quickly if it starts to be a problem. Believe me I understand your concern and when it does open up we will be keeping a close eye on it. On a positive note, things being the way they are in the world right now, a little venting may be interesting..... hopefully.

OK, I have created it but it is hidden. Nobody can see it unless they specifically ask for access and are provided with the link to it. The rest of the board can continue as if nothing has happened, and those of us who wish to argue about politics can do so to our heart's content.

I can't say I am surprised to see this happen, after it being ended on you know where.
While I ventured into it over there, I didn't post all that much--mostly just took a look & wasn't offended, even when I disagreed. Some of it was fun.
Some people just blew off steam.
Didn't affect how I saw them ont he rest of the forum. And if it doesn't work--it could always be deleted

Prefer this to just be guitar related. Politics & religion are always iffy subjects on places like this.

I agree with Rob and JR that this could wind up getting nasty quickly. In my opinion you have a good group of guys here right now that hold to unwritten rules of decorum that are stricter than the actual rules of the forum. I'd hate to see that devolve into unnecessary acrimony. And I'm certain nobody wants to know my politics!

I've looked at the new forum a few times. I haven't found anything there yet that really captured my interest (although that could change) but I'm impressed with how many views it's getting. And, I know some of the new arrivals are maybe here primarily for the political content, but there's a good chance they'll look in on the general forum while they're here.

I look at the 'political discussion' title of the forum as a catchall phrase for taboo subjects that would most likely be deleted or result in a suspension on a typical forum. For instance, if I came across an article regarding 'gov't changes to the tax law' and wanted to share it, it would most likely be considered out of bounds because of it's political connotations.

Like all forums, it's a community of like minded individuals (guitar enthusiasts) getting to know each other, sharing their views.
There's more to life than just discussing guitars though, eh?! The reason for 'The Pub'. State what's on your mind regarding other topics.
Sometimes, they may not mesh, which most anti-politic/taboo subject minded people argue will happen and tear society apart.
That's where the 'choice' comes into play. Participate, or don't. Nothing wrong with being a voyeur either.

Of course Colchar and the mods run the show but few of the guys around here would get bent out of shape about discussion about tax laws. I avoid online politics because it often just devolves into people complaining about "the other side" which is simply tiresome. I took myself off Facebook because I was sick of the acrimony and complaining. Half complain about Trump and the other half complain about Harris= tiresome

If you wish to avoid reading/talking about politics, that's your choice and I respect that. Some still do. It seems that more are trying to censor what others want to say because it goes against 'the narrative'. The 'complainers' are closed minded. As you imply, they are just ideologues. Arguing will not change minds if it's formatted in the same tone of dialogue. Backing up one's argument with linked sources sometimes makes the other think. Getting society back to 'discussing' differences will make for a better nation.

I agree with you completely. Sadly political discourse is no longer allowed in the US anymore. I know people personally who stopped talking to friends because of how they voted- pathetic.

One can well regret their vote, but to punish others for not being on on their "team" is inexcusable. It is what got us here in the first place.

More general political topics will be discussed, but even those are generally seen through the prism of Canadian politics.
