I've heard people challenge this, in the sense of what makes one a successful musician.
But in the context of the quote he is answering a question about what would he(Randy Bachman) have been if his music career never happened--and eh hadn't had those hits with the Guess Who & BTO, etc.
His answer is he'd still be a musician--just one without that career
