I'll bet a lot of people do... Well, why not--allows for a good break. Absolutely, for most people, vacation costs a couple grand and that tax return makes that possible. Many people say that if you get a tax refund, you are giving the government a free loan, but getting that little windfall is a nice feeling.

Eureka!!!! UPS just dropped off my replacement power washer. My almost 3 yr old power washer started tripping the breaker every time i turned it on. The warranty was up on May 15th so last week I told Karcher about it and sent them all the required info last Wednesday. Friday I got an email saying that they were shipping me a new one and it would take 10-15 working days....3 working days later, it’s here!! Wow, nice one! Yup just in time to wash all that salt and winter grime off of the cars!

My day, or actually the last couple of days have really gone sour. Yesterday after work, I started noticing that I was having a toothache. By the time I got into the evening, it had turned into one of the ugliest dental problems I've ever had, and by the time I should have been thinking about sleep, I had a headache from it so bad that I thought about going to hospital. The only reason I didn't is because the hospital's answer to dental problems is to pull teeth. Having just spent 80.00 on the tooth in question a few weeks ago, and not having any teeth I can spare, I decided to ride it out. I had a sleepless night and by the time I left for work this morning I was miserable. I ended up going to my family doctor, hoping that if I started a course of antibiotics, maybe it would settle down. The doctor wrote me a prescription but insisted that I call the dentist immediately. The dentist would only agree to see me if I promised to pay the balance on my account from that little fiasco of misbilling in early February. I told them I was going to get money from my employer on Friday, so they booked me in this afternoon. After a fifteen minute consult and an x-ray (which cost me another 80.00), they told me that I had a massive infection and that there was no saving that tooth...It has to be extracted. I wish they'd told me this in early February before I threw away money replacing a filling in it. Long story short, they've booked me for an extraction Friday morning, and when it's done, I'll owe them another 1072.20 which has to be paid the same day. I'm expecting it to eat up any money I get from my employer, plus whatever money I can get pawning a couple of guitars. At that point, I'll have spent over two grand in under six weeks on my teeth with nothing to show for it except a big hole in my mouth that means I'll never be able to chew anything on the left side for the rest of my life. I'll be completely broke for at least another month, and living a bare existence. I'm about as miserable at I can be but there's absolutely nothing I can do except accept it.

I had an infected tooth & severe pain recently--missed some time here from it. And I did lose that tooth. Antibiotics ultimately were the most helpful thing. But the cost sucks a lot--especially in your case--much more expensive than mine. hopefully you can adapt.

At least you have money coming in from the side job. I'm surprised that this stuff is so expensive in Canada- I thought you had national health service. Doesn't that pay for this kind of thing?

Dentists are not part of our health care system. When I did my daughters income tax yesterday, i got her dental and prescription receipts for the year as they are deductible and she gets a tax credit. She had $2500 in receipts and $2000 was dental. Now she’s supposed to get 4 wisdom teeth pulled which is gonna be another couple of thousand.
Usually our insurance through work has a dental plan that pays between 80-100% of standard procedures (cleaning, fillings and X-rays.) Root canals and extractions are usually limited to the first $350 -500 in most cases and most bridges and crowns are not covered at all.

I just assumed that dental was covered under NHS. The private insurance from employers is pretty much exactly how it is here. You can get NHS dentists in the UK, in fact both me and the wife are registered with them.
You still pay for services, but hell of a lot cheaper than private
There are 3 bands of charges for all NHS dental treatments.
Band 1 dental treatment: £23.80
This covers 1 or more treatments (as many as are necessary) from the following list :
adjusting false teeth (dentures) or orthodontic appliances, such as braces applying sealants or fluoride preparations to the surfaces of your teeth a clinical examination, assessment and report marginal correction of fillings moulds of your teeth – for example, to see how your teeth bite together an orthodontic assessment and report a scale and polish (if clinically necessary) coloured photographs taking a sample of cells or tissue from your mouth for examination treating sensitive cementum (the tissue that covers the root of a tooth)
Band 2 dental treatment: £65.20
This can cover anything listed in band 1 above, plus any of the following:
an addition to your dentures – such as adding a clasp or a tooth apicectomy – removing the tip of the root of a tooth a mouth guard to correct your "bite" (doesn't include a laboratory-made appliance) fillings free gingival grafts – when healthy tissue from the roof of your mouth is attached to your teeth where the root is exposed frenectomy, frenoplasty or frenotomy – surgery to the folds of tissue that connect your tongue, lips and cheeks to your jaw bone treatment for severe gum disease – such as root planing (cleaning bacteria from the roots of your teeth), deep scaling and a polish, or a gingivectomy (removal of gum tissue) oral surgery – such as removing a cyst, or soft tissue surgery to the mouth or lips pulpotomy – removing dental pulp (the soft tissue at the centre of a tooth) relining and rebasing dentures removing teeth (extraction) root canal treatment sealant to fill small holes or grooves in your teeth splinting loose teeth – for example, after an accident (this does not include laboratory-made splints) transplanting teeth
Band 3 dental treatment: £282.80
This can cover anything listed in bands 1 and 2 above, plus any of the following :
bridges – a fixed replacement for a missing tooth or teeth crowns – a type of cap that completely covers your real tooth dentures inlays, pinlays and onlays – used to restore damaged teeth orthodontic treatment and appliances such as braces other custom-made appliances, not including sports guards veneers and palatal veneers – new surfaces for the front or back of a tooth Treatments such as veneers and braces are only available on the NHS if there's a clinical need for them (not for cosmetic reasons).
Similarly, other cosmetic treatments, such as teeth whitening, are not available on the NHS.

I managed to get some sleep last night so the world looks a little brighter. The painkillers the doctor prescribed have finally kicked in too, and it hurts but it's bearable this morning. I can understand how people get hooked on this stuff though and I'll be happy to give it up soon before it becomes a new monkey on my back.
I'm sad about losing one of my important back teeth though. The damage is part of a gift I got from six guys who kicked the crap out of me when I was 18 and leaving work at the radio station after midnight one night. Ever since, I've have serious dental problems from cracked and broken teeth after I was grabbed by the beard, pulled down to the sidewalk and kicked in the face a dozen or so times. The only satisfaction I've had is that the ringleader finally met somebody who did to him what he did to me and he met his maker.
Anyway, I'm having a little better day today.

The only satisfaction I've had is that the ringleader finally met somebody who did to him what he did to me and he met his maker. Anyway, I'm having a little better day today. That's good. I suppose I've been lucky in life that apart from one bullying incident in primary school, I have only been assaulted once in my life, back in 1980, while in the RAF. Four of us, were out having a few drinks with a colleague who was leaving. The other three were two girls and a boy, who worked for me, all about 10 years younger.
On the way back to the camp a stream of motorbikes went past on the road. Now this was unusual for Stanmore, North London, where we were, as it's quite a posh place despite the presence of an RAF camp. Anyway, I glanced across to watch them go past and then carried on walking.
Next minute, I felt something hit my right arm and someone kick me up my arse. I turned around and saw this idiot standing there with a long knife in each hand. The blow to my right arm was from one of the knives. Being sensible and not brave, I shouted to the other three to run. We were only about 100 yards from a pub, so my intention was to get the landlord to call the police (no mobile phones in those days). When I got to the pub, I turned round to see where the others were. The boy was just behind me, but the two girls were arguing with the idiot with the knife. I called for them to come, which they did....walking. I ran into the pub and told the landlord who called the police. They were there within 5 minutes, having must have been on patrol. As they came into the pub, I went up to the first copper who pushed and knocked me over. The landlord and quite a few drinkers all shouted 'hang on a sec, he's the victim'.
Another copper picked me, not apologising and asked me what happened. I told them and they ran outside after telling me to go to the police station the next day.
I did this and found out that they caught the bloke after he fought with 3 policemen, slashing their tunics. The copper who interviewed me showed my what I thought were two knives was in fact an industrial hacksaw, about 18 inches long and 2-3 inches wide. The bloke had made two knives from them, one 6 inches and the other 12 inches. He had put points on them and sharpened the edges, so they were razor sharp. In fact the copper showed me how sharp by holding a piece of A4 paper up and just using the weight of the 'knife' to cut it in two. They said the fact I was wearing a leather bomber jacket probably saved my arm from getting severely cut.
This idiot told the police I had looked at him, when he was walking on the other side of the road. In fact I didn't even notice him, I had just turned to see the motorbikes go past. He was charged with resisting arrest and assault on police, rather than me, as it was a more serious offence, although I did have to give evidence in court. It was a jury trial, so they must have considered it quite serious and I think he was given 3 years, so probably out in 18 months.
So I was lucky. Only a badly bruised bum and a slice out of my bomber jacket, but it could have been much worse. It took me quite a while before I was comfortable walking at night again. If I heard footsteps behind me, I used to shake a bit.

If it’s an infection, can’t you take antibiotics with painkillers until it dies down and then have the tooth worked on to fix whatever is causing the infection? You need my daughter there to fight for you. She has a way of arguing things that would bring a dentist to his knees. Our old dentist, who was a close family friend, used to do things to keep costs down for us. I have a molar that he rebuilt and its probably 50% filling. Unfortunately, he retired a few years ago and sold his business to a “Dental corporation”. These guys are always trying to find problems even if they aren’t bothering you. My molar has been fine for over 30 years but every time I go there he wants me to put a crown on it. Last time I was there he told me that 2 of my fillings look old and should be replaced. I have a dental plan and so fillings are free. They did the same to my daughter and said two of her fillings need replacement as they are old. Well she laid into them, said that she’s not made of freaking money and without a dental plan she’s not “fixing shit that ain’t broke”. She said she doesn’t intend on getting unnecessary work done so that they can pay off the huge mortgages on their two new offices. They said okay then, next cleaning is in 6 months, pay at the desk and have a nice day. I’d send her out there to help you but she needs to make money to pay for her wisdom teeth extractions (her choice, not the dentist)

Today, I brought my Tucson in for an oil change and tire rotation. I left it with them and they called me back and recommended an alignment inspection ($30) and a brake tuneup (cleaning and lubricating all mating surfaces for $179). Come on now....the tires are wearing perfectly and the car drives dead straight....there’s my alignment inspection. As for the brakes, 40,000km and they need lubricating and cleaning? I’ve normally gone 70,000km without looking at the brakes at all. For $179, my regular mechanic will clean and lubricate all 4 brake calipers and replace the front pads too.
Afterwards, I hit Lowe’s and picked up some satin nickel door hinges to replace the old brass hinges on our doors. I never got around to changing them over when I put satin nickel door knobs on them. Two doors down, six more to go.

I'm sure the dealers are starving for service business. There was a point where we hadn't driven out cars for something like 3 months and I had to put gas stabilizer in the tanks. Imagine how many people who usually drive 12,000 miles a year only drove 6,000 or less last year?

yeah, you've got to watch some of those guys. there's only one shop around here that I trust for alignment and they do it for a living. they are an alignment shop. I'm sure the dealers are starving for service business. There was a point where we hadn't driven out cars for something like 3 months and I had to put gas stabilizer in the tanks. Imagine how many people who usually drive 12,000 miles a year only drove 6,000 or less last year? Well when I had my last oil change last Sept, I noticed that the dealership had signage showing 3 month/5000km (3000mi) oil changes although the owners manual recommends 6 mth/6000km for severe use and 12mth/12000km for normal driving. Also Hyundai Canada moved to using only synthetic oil in all their dealerships although my owners manual recommended either conventional or synthetic oil. So I mentioned to them that their recommended intervals don’t match the manuals, especially now that they are using synthetic oil. I said that my other 2 vehicles use synthetic oil and the recommended change intervals are 6 months/8000km. Anyway when I got my car back today, I noticed that the reminder sticker showed my next change being due in 6 months/ 7000km. I think others complained about the service intervals too and they listened. Geez, oil changes every 3 months went out of style with saddle shoes and Bobby socks! When I used to drive to work, I used to put 24K km (16K mi) annually on my vehicles. I’ve only put 14K km (9K mi)on this car since buying it 19 months ago. It’s also another reason that I waited 6 months to get my oil change....I had only put 4800km on it since September. I agree that these guys must be hurting. I only go to the dealership for actual required services....oil changes and transmission services...until the warranty expires. Just covering my own ass in case anything breaks down. I have a good mechanic that does brake jobs for half the cost of the dealer. So he gets all my other business.

It must be very high grade synthetic. You think I'm going to change the oil after only half that? One of the reasons I'm planning on a long road trip is to put miles on the car so I can take it in for service. Of course I also want to visit my friend! I've never driven as little add i did last year

I’d send her out there to help you but she needs to make money to pay for her wisdom teeth extractions (her choice, not the dentist) I got see the x-ray they took of the bad tooth. The dentist wasn't BSing me.....There's only a tiny bit of the top of the tooth that's still attached, but all around the outside at the gumline, it's cracked and broken. The dentist told me that there isn't anyone that can bring it back to life at this point. He says if someone tries to do a money grab by putting time and money into repairs, it's a waste of time....The first time I bite down hard on it, it'll break off. In this case I believe him.
The sad part is that I lost the back tooth on that side right after I got the crap kicked out of me, so once I lose the tooth that's going now, there won't be enough left to chew on the left side. I'll still be able to chew carefully on the right side, although I'm missing teeth that meet properly, so it won't be easy.
I've always had a conviction that dentures are a bad solution to dental problems. I've seen enough people that have issues....food getting stuck where it doesn't belong, changes in the ability to taste things properly, and most of all, problems that affect their speech. I find that a lot of people, to be kind, talk like they've got a mouthful of marbles. If you don't believe me, listen to the reverse mortgage commercials done by James Garner and Tom Selleck.....They're still distinguished-looking mature men, but they just can't speak as well as they used to. I'll grimly hang on to the teeth I've got and refuse to rely on full or partial dentures.

I guess an implant is out of the question? I know this is an expensive option.
