I wish I could find the video I saw online about ten years ago.....It was done by one of the companies that was offering kind of a hybrid case that was like a gigbag with styrofoam inserts. Their demonstration of their product involved putting a Gibson Les Paul in their case and throwing it off a four-storey building onto the asphalt. The guitar survived. It's probably the best demonstration I've ever seen for a soft-shell case. Sounds like the Mono make I have for my 335. The Mono M80 Vertigo Semi-Hollow and it cost me £194 a couple of years ago. They are now £209
They have done numerous videos showing gig bag and guitar being thrown around. This is one thrown downstairs
This one shows the bag out of a window.
Not the video I was thinking of--but same idea.

I checked out the Mono cases- how do you like yours, John? They are certainly pricey for a gig bag, but also not your run of the mill gig bag either.

I bought it originally for my 335, but I occasionally put a Les Paul in there. Lots of pockets for leads, strings and straps as well. My only slight regret is that my Guild Starfire III is slightly too big to go in, but it's not a big issue as I rarely gigged the Guild.
If you were going to get one for your big bodied guitar in the pic you posted, I would try and check whether it fitted before buying.

Good advice for sure, but that could be challenging- I've never seen this brand in stores. But you are right, my Guild is big, with the lower bout measuring at 17" or 17 1/2"

It's a tight fit, but does fit. It's the Bigsby on my guitar that makes it awkward. I wiggle it a bit and it drops in.
I would try contacting them to see what they say about your guitar fitting or not. They're too expensive to buy and find it doesn't fit

When I bought my Fender Thinline, it came with a case similar to this. It was extremely light and quite solid for an all foam case. At the time I wanted a hard shell case so I sold it but in hindsight, I should have kept it as it was made for Teles and Strats. www.thomann.de/be/gator_foam_case_electric_guitar.htm

I've never had either the disposable income or the space to do it, but I used to think it would be fun to create a case collection. Aside from all the configurations, like rectangular, guitar shaped, poodle shape, chainsaw shape, coffin shaft, and then all the varieties of cases and case finishes. I've seen a few cases that I thought would be cool to own, if a bit impractical like the embossed vinyls, leather tooled, and animal hides. Then there's the whole amp-in-case thing like the old Silvertone guitar and amp combination. I think if my eyesight and budget had lasted long enough, it would have been fun to do a couple of custom amp-in-case pieces, just for fun.

I always thought that whole "amp in case" thing was pretty neat too. I hear the old Silvertones are pretty bad, but it would be cool to have one that sounds good

I don't have one, but I have a friend who bought 2 guitars with them. The Gibson Protector case--also called the chainsaw case. They were very protective, and not that heavy. Best feature was the handle that was so well placed & comfortable for carrying the guitar.
And here's a video on the various generations of the case:
Gen 2 is the one I am familiar with. If i found one in good condition & could afford it at the time, I'd buy one

It does kind of look like a chainsaw case. I've never seen these.

It does kind of look like a chainsaw case. I've never seen these. I used to stand on my friends case, way back then-but I was scrawny -even into my 20s He was taller & weighed more and he stood on it to show off how good it was--so I tried out as well. But if you have to walk any distance or take bus with a guitar these cases were great for that--the handle was comfortable to hold--and well placed the guitar just balance nicely. Unlike my Iceman case which has horrible nosedive.

After I built my son’s Strat, I was using my old Levy’s gig bag to protect it. Then one day, a guy that worked with me asked me if I’d be interested in a hard shell case for it....free. A friend of his gave him a bunch of old cases that he didn’t want/need anymore. So he gave me a nice molded plastic G&L case, fitted for a Strat. Beautiful case and although not as light as a gig bag, much lighter than my rectangular wooden Fender cases. Here is an identical case on reverb reverb.com/item/2453668-g-l-molded-hardshell-case-grey

I remember Fender having some plastic cases...I think they actually had name embossed into the plastic....back in the eighties, I was under the impression that plastic cases tended to get brittle and become less durable. How do the G&L cases look - Do they seem sturdy? If so, they might be a good compromise between the gigbags and the standard hardshell cases with the lighter weight. I love my G&G cases but they're not lightweights.

It is apparently the same substance used in many bus bumpers/fenders And my friend has had that case out in the cold--and no damage. the Fender ones I've seen are not as endurable--but hardly seem fragile. But there may be various ones of varying quality.

I can take a picture when I go downstairs if you want

I believe those were made by SKB. Very nice sturdy cases.

There is a small crack on the G&L case but who knows what happened to it before I received it. Would I trust it if I stood on it? No. Would I trust it to protect the guitar if it’s accidentally dropped a couple of feet off the back of the van? Pretty certain that the guitar won’t be damaged. like I said the G&L is a lot lighter than a G&G but that’s because it’s mainly molded foam fitted into a thin outer plastic membrane.

I think gig bags are great if your moving around a lot with your guitar, especially walking. I have a couple guitars that would cause me anxiety if I were to put them in gig bags. The lp studio I bought a year or so ago came with a sort of a hybrid/semir-rigid soft case which I think is pretty cool, anyone seen those?

I think have something sort of like that for my Fibretone, but l was never really satisfied with it (which is why I am interested in that other gig bag JR posted).I think mine was an Ibanez case. I can post a picture of mine later

I've seen something recently online regarding Fender starting to manufacture and reissue thermometer cases. The person talking about it mentioned the thermometer cases being fairly poorly balanced and probably not offering the same level of protection as the rectangular cases, but still being appealing in the aesthetic sense.

Do you mean cases shaped like this? I have one like this for my fretless bass & it is a great fit--and good size & the handle is placed nicely--easy to carry. I can't speak for the Fender ones though--maybe the handle is placed differently? I find most rectangular cases tend to be front heavy with the handle placement. I know my Iceman case has hit many curbs, steps, and other obstacles because of that A teardrop case (as above) offers better protection in my eyes. It won't hit as much stuff. Although you might be referring to a different shape.

Nope, not a teardrop case....Thermometer case is actually guitar-shaped. linkOkay--cool. In some ways these would be better than rectangular cases--some of which I listed above. Although the case for my Mustang is small enough it is less likely to bang on stuff. But this type of case--if it fits the guitar is great--less movement
