Back in September 2016, we were due to play a couple of Gigs in and around South Wales.
Our singer set off from his home in Spain allowing a 3 days for the journey by car as he normally does. Unfortunately there were loads of problems en-route for him and he rang me on the Friday morning to say he wouldn't make it in time. His expected arrival would be around midnight.
I didn't like cancelling at such short notice but thought the landlord may be able to get another band. As I was already in Wales, I popped up the pub and had a word him. He said he could get another band but he was expecting a crowd that would be disappointed as it was always packed when we played.
I quickly had a word with a couple of the band and they said we could just about manage without Adrian, by people who don't normally sing having a go.
This is one of the songs. Whilst most of us had played it in the past, we had never done it in our band. The drummer did the song in his other band, but in a different key. Rather than switch keys, the keys player said he would have a go if I printed the words out for him.
So we gave it a go. Despite me starting way too slow, it wasn't too bad.
BTW it was my wedding anniversary as well

That's really nice of the owner to say that!

Always best to not cancel if you can help it, and good effort--if the energy & attitude and all that are there--it can get you past things like the singer not able to make it.
Although some bands would probably have to do mostly an instrumental show.

Although some bands would probably have to do mostly an instrumental show. We were lucky then in having 3 main vocalists. Now one bloke has retired it's down to 2, so we can manage without playing instrumentals. We just make the songs last longer like we did in the 60s.

I can see extended solos would help--or additional solos. I'd be okay with that

Even now we have 3 with sax and 2 guitars. If you count me on harmonica as well that's 4 types of solos.
We have played songs that last about 20 odd minutes, particularly old blues stuff like Smokestack Lightning. Our audiences seem to love the single chord drone type music

Wow 20 minutes is long! I think the longest song we ever played was about 10 minutes, which was a tango called La Cumparsita
