At one point I stopped using/decreased my use of delay or echo, because I sounded like a poor imitation of what Brian May does here. But then I got over that--and I try other stuff. I still use the ideas he has put forth here, but back off if it sounds like a mere pale copy.
Anyone else have similar or wildly different experiences with delay/echo?

I rarely use it, preferring a dryer sound and a simpler setup. Although my henricksen has onboard echo so maybe I'll start messing with it again

I used a Watkins Copicat in our early Shadows days, but never use pedals. I do have a couple of pedals that I bought one, to be honest to try and wean our other guitarist away from an awful digital pedalboard he has. When we recorded our album, I asked the engineer to convince him to use an Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer I had bought. He was convinced and his sound really opened up. The other one I have is a BOSS RV-6 Reverb Guitar Pedal that I bought when we were going to play some Shadows numbers at a gig. None of my amps have reverb, so I thought it might help. In the end I didn't bother. i do use echo effects when recording though, mainly to mask my voice

I like using delay and/or reverb to help fill in the sound it there is no keyboard or other guitar player. Sometimes a little chorus helps too. I don’t like digital delays...too clean. I have an old Ibanez AD9 that sounds really nice.

I have an old Ibanez AD9 that sounds really nice. I used delay just for songs that called for it, now I am also using it more often with the chorus pedal. Both my chorus and delay are boss pedals and do a pretty good job, the delay is still a work in progress for me.

I bought a used BOSS DD-3 on eBay a few years back. After playing with it briefly, I decided I liked plugging in direct, I stopped using pedals for a couple of years. Now, when I try to use that DD-3, it sounds like Doo-Doo 3. I can't believe it failed just sitting in the drawer for an extended period of time, but I can't get anything usable out of it. I'm afraid to try to sell it in case it's bad, but I don't even try to use it any more.

Let someone else see if they can make it work for them.
Maybe they can--and sell it to them.
I have used pedals that don't work for others & the other way around as well.
