Barre? Open? Triads? Power chords? Other?
How do you typically play chords on the guitar?

I generally Barre everything too. I rarely use cowboy chords.
Triads are just another way to look at chords as 1-3-5 arpeggios. They aren't difficult to comprehend but I don't use them in performance because Barres are fuller and easier to cycle through.

I came from playing in thrash metal bands for years. During those days I was well versed in single string sixteenth note rides and of course power chords. After I left that world I got in my first cover band. Long story short I had to relearn how to play because I knew nothing else. Learning the barre chords came fairly easy as I was already used to power chords. Learning open chords and their variations is still going on to this day. These days I use a pretty good mixture i guess.

When gigging, I mostly play what I call twiddles as we have another guitarist playing chords. When he does any solos, I fill in on chords. As it's mainly old fashioned R&B, I would be playing barre chords or 7ths. Our singer does most of his stuff in G, although there are some in A, Am & C. All easy stuff

I use all sorts of chords--although I tend to avoid augmented & diminished chords.
I play open chords, barre chords, & power chords.
Mostly power chords some days.
If you have 2 guitars I like how it sounds to have one play open chords & the other to play power chords.
For power chords I usually play root, 5th & Octave--although I also like to play them as double stops--5th & Octave.
And I sometimes throw in a Hendrix chord.

Some songs require them as passing chords. A few songs we play have more prominent diminished chords or have disminished runs, which is interesting

If I have to I can play them, I did learn them after all, but they just feel weird to me.

They are weird. I only use one open sliding pattern for diminished chords. I do cheat occasionally by sharping a maj7 root for the quick passing diminished chord

They are weird. I only use one open sliding pattern for diminished chords. That's okay if you are playing a song made up of diminished chords-or a section of diminished chords. I still find it awkward getting to that pattern (I did learn it though) Oh well--lots of ways of dealing with the chords, etc.

I still find it awkward getting to that pattern (I did learn it though) Yeah for some songs there are sections where you just can't avoid playing them and half diminished doesn't cut it. You are right the pattern is awkward to get to- there isn't an easy barre pattern
