Caleb got a new Jackson JS22 Dinky with his Christmas dough. The kid now has more guitars than me. At $199, it's a really good guitar. Today we'll restring it, and give it a real setup. Next time I get get a guitar, I'll have Caleb help me choose it. He's got some kind of mojo working with choosing guitars. Three in a row. We ordered him a Marshall MG30CFX for Christmas. That's on back order until the end January. The Jackson - The Marshall - Quite a racket he, and have going. It's the guitar version of a "baseball dad." Caleb played Little League baseball for about five years, and hated it. And, I wasn't fond of it. Now, he's really digging music, and playing the guitar. It's a blast to go to Guitar Center with him. He's really trying to learn the instrument. He sits in his room with his tab books and works mightily on the songs he wants to learn. Raspy - the most Metal of the smilies.

It's all setup now. Damn good guitar for the price point. He played an LTD, as well. That was also a killer guitar. Makes me want one of these. It's cool now that I've outgrown the need to have cork sniffed levels of guitars. If it plays well, it's all good.

I have a couple of Super Strat types and truthfully they're amongst my favorites. I like both the black and the heritage cherry there. I have a black Epi X1000 and a heritage cherry (flame top) Matsumoku Westone that I really like.

He will be dive bombing all over the place with that axe. Think his Dad will be sneaking a few whammy bar moments too when he's at school.

Nothing even remotely like that in that quality or price range available when I was a teenager. Lucky young feller!
Guitars either cost a fortune or were a POS. Those were your choices.

For the truth. Horrible guitars by Kay & Satellite were the order of the day back when I was a young skelper. Paul got it right a long time ago when he said those guitars had an action so high you could limbo dance under. They were brutal.

My first electric guitar was an cheap Electra "immitation" Les Paul. It was made out of plywood. As the finish cured over a year, the finish sunk in to the wood and you could see it was made from plywood. It was very similar to the this photo I found.

They were always black & smelled funny. Could not barre a chord beyond the fifth fret to save my life.

Can all be undone by a cold snap Colin. Fingers go slower than a weekend in the jail when the extremities shut down & right now mine are numb....brrrrrrrrrr. All fingers & thumbs. Can't play shit.

I have those days too, even without the cold. I have never been very comfortable with a pick and prefer to use my fingers, but have been trying to force myself to use a pick a bit too because I have it in the back of my head that I am somehow missing something by not using one. But see when I picked one up yesterday? It was like the first time I had ever held one Seriously, I was so fumbley that I would have been better off switching around and playing left handed. After about five minutes I said fuck it and tossed the pick. But when I was at the guitar store today I was fine, even using the exact same make, model, and gauge of pick. Fucked if I know what was wrong with me yesterday.

Just hitting them in a new way. Once you got that under the belt then it takes no time at all to get back in the swing what with finger memory & all. But Aye...Some days yer all fingers & thumbs & can't play shit. Happens mate. Just quit that bad day & go for a stroll, watch a movie or have a sneaky wee ham shank. Lot's to be done when the mind is burnt out on the strings.
