I Cannot believe it. My nephew finally talked me into listening to Cannibal Corpse. Despite the terribly cheesy, horror movie lyrics. These guys are actually great musicians. I think I've finally stumbled off into the deep end. This is my nephew (r) with the drummer of Cannibal Corpse. My nephews band got to open for Sunday's Knotfest, on the second stage, a few weeks ago.

I've always liked highly technical music, even though I'm principally a blues/rock player. What I like about these two types of metal is the precision. There's no place to hide when your doing what these guys are doing.

It's really cool that you've been listening to this stuff hard enough to appreciate what these guys do. I've always believed that they don't get credit for what great musicians they are because of the style of music they play. When I started I was playing a lot of iron maiden, ac/dc, black sabbath and all that morphed into thrash once I met a couple guys who were already into it, after that I was addicted. It was a real rush to play that style as a band but took over a year of relentless practicing and writing to get our first 45 minutes..... Great memories. I have pics all over the house of those days and my cover days. It's fun to see the contrast hanging on the walls.

I like such a variety of music. I show people my iTunes (all my collection is iTunes based), and they look, all bleary eyed, and say "you've got weird tastes in music." From new underground country to extreme metal, and all points in between. I've got some jazz, some classical, just to round things out. By the way, I NEVER listen to the music on the radio. And, I'll probably go head long into a genre with no rhyme or reason.
The so called underground country is great stuff. I found Whitey Morgan and the 78s on a whim. I bought his live album Born, Raised and Live From Flint and was blown away. He's just raw country, and a great songwriter. Then whilst reading reviews, I found Cody Jinks. His latest The Adobe Sessions is another fine album. He's a former Metal guy from Texas, who decided to play country. He's a great songwriter. And, of course, I end up finding all this cool country music, that has nothing to do with the garbage on the radio.
I love blues. I spent a couple of years back in the late 70s learning acoustic blues, and I'm still at that. I love it because it's raw, and dirty. Most of the modern blues players are too clean and polished. Joe Bonamassa, for example, is a great player, but it's just to clean and polished. One of the reasons, I like the last ZZ Top album was because it was jagged. In my opinion, Rick Ruben did a great job producing that one. Elvin Bishop's last record Can't Even Do Wrong Right is another raw sounding record. I still love the Allman Brothers Band. Rory Gallagher was a genius. I liked Gary Moore better when he was playing hard rock.
Rock n Roll - I love The Rolling Stones. I've been a fan since I was 11 years old, and heard Honky Tonk Women. I spent one Summer learning Keith Richards' guitar parts from Exile On Main St. After doing that I realized that he's not as simple as people think. He's far from the best guitar player in the world, but he knows where to put the notes, and play rhythm. I think a lot of folks miss the great production of The Stones on the records from 1968 through 1972. A lot of experimentation, and depth in those records. Led Zeppelin, and Jimmy Page were plumbing the same depths of production on their records. Other bands I dug - Thin Lizzy, Molly Hatchet, Cheap Trick, Blue Oyster Cult.
Then it's metal. Everyone knows the old classic stuff - Black Sabbath, etc. Then the New Wave of British Metal. Iron Maiden is still one of my favorite bands, and Saxon. I never listened to Slayer when they first came out. Metallica was a mind blower for me. Master of Puppets - I wore out my vinyl version of that. Then, as a really late bloomer, I happened on Motorhead, and Meshuggah, which, of course, led me on a search. So, now here I am, an old guy, listening to Slayer, and other Thrash Metal bands, and farther into it with Cannibal Corpse, and Blotted Science. I neglected to mention Mastodon, they're like a metal version of Yes.
Punk. I listen to a lot. But don't know the genre that well. Sid is the one that knows the good stuff. So, I'll take his advice about it.
I just want to hear music that's not on everybody's radar.
My taste in music that I listen to drives my wife up a wall. However, I get a good dose of it driving back and forth to work. 20 minutes one way. So, 40 minutes of good tunes. The really aggressive stuff helps sooth my nerves after a day with high school kids.
So, tomorrow morning, I think I'll listen to some Whitey Morgan on the way to school.

Your taste in music drives your wife up the wall? LOL..... I sure glad I'm not the only one. She's into Elton John, James Taylor, and Motown, type stuff. She thinks AC/DC is to "hard." I can appreciate those artists, and, in fact, I love Motown.

My nephew is a great drummer. And he fits the stereotype. Crazy! The thing is, he's extremely smart. He writes some great stuff on FB, and has a sharp wit.

I love me some metal but I am pretty picky these days. Same goes for rap/hip hop.
When it comes to metal, I still want groove...which is why I am a fan of bands like Fear Factory, Ghost, Gwar (Lust in Space albums specifically), Black Sabbath, Ministry, The Absence etc.
I can appreciate the technical skill when it comes to the complicated math metal but I don't have much of an ear for it to listen for more than 1-2 songs at a time.

I've been listening to Iron Maiden's Book of Souls all week, on my drive home from school. Damn, what a great set. They've been one of my favorite bands for years, starting with Killers.
