Yep, when I first ventured down the rabbit hole I knew this was how it was going to go............
I still have the Boss SD-1 and have since picked up a Joyo Ultimate Drive which is their version of the Fulltone OCD. Not sure I like it though. I think that maybe the Joyo Sweet Baby, which is their version of the Mad Professor Sweet Honey, would be a better choice for me. I'll spenddf some more time with the UD and, if I don't like it, I'll just trade it for something else like the Sweet Honey. And earlier today I picked up an EHX Soul Food. I'll try it out tonight to see if it lives up to all the love that Edro gives it.
At some point I will pick up an inexpensive delay pedal and will then start putting together a small pedalboard.

Just remember Edro has no taste. He likes lime Kool Aid with strips of baloney in it.

Lol, rabbit hole is correct, in the end, you always work your way back out albeit a few hundred bucks later. Anyhow, I would like to offer a little advise on the delay pedal. Don't go to cheap, there are so few out there that are worth a shit. You really do get what you pay for when it comes to delay pedals. For the dollar, MXR makes a pretty damn good delay, simple to operate, sturdy and the delay effect is on par with some of its high dollar counterparts. Shop around and you'll find huge differences in the sound and control of delay from one pedal to the next. I guess what I'm trying to say is be careful and ring the pedal out pretty good before you buy it, delay pedals are tricky.

I use a TC Flashbook. Under $170.00. A great pedal with a lot of settings.

Before I get into delay pedals and the like, I figured I should grab one more OD pedal just to have different flavours available. Someone on another forum offered me two Tube Screamers - a Maxon OD9 and an Ibanex TS9 with some kind of Monte Allums mod - for $100 for the two of them or $50 each. Or he said I could take them both and send back the one that I don't want. The modded one sounds like it has more gain than what I would want so I doubt I will bother with that and will likely just go for the Maxon. Or I could buy both and sell the modded one and basically get the Maxon for free. Fucking rabbit holes...............

I decided to buy the Maxon, but not the Ibanez. Since that one is modded and has extra gain, it is more than what I need. I could have bought both and sold the Ibanez to get my money back but if he is offering these at such good prices then I figure it is better to leave the Ibanez for someone else who might want it. Better to allow the wealth to be shared around than to be greedy.
So now I have an SD-1, a Joyo Ultimate Drive, a Soul Food, and a Maxon Tube Screamer is on the way. The Joyo UD is a clone of an OCD, the Soul Food is a very well regarded clone of the Klon Centaur, and both the SD-1 and OD-9 are industry standards that some might say are iconic pedals. That should be more than enough drive pedals eh? I can stop looking into those and can settle down for a while before looking into delay pedals and the like.
I might not be crawling back out of the rabbit hole, but have at least stopped my descent for the time being - and the four pedals that I do have cost me a total of only $200.

You'll be buying more. I'm a pedal junkie. I just bought a JHS Muffuletta - it does the main versions of the EH Big Muff. I got this for some old school fuzz guitar. I had a "Ram's Head" Big Muff when I was a kid. And then a Keeley Oxblood, which is Robert Keeley's take on the Klon. By the way, I have no qualms about paying a bit for pedals. Therapy is in order.

I think David has developed a serious problem. This is what happens when you travel so far down the rabbit hole you lose sight of the light. This is a cautionary tale Colin. When you have fooled yourself into thinking money is no object when it comes to pedals.......your gone. As the snowball rolls downhill it just gets bigger and bigger. Toad needs to seek counseling immediately before we lose him forever in pedal hell.

Toad needs counselling for many things, pedals are the least of his worries As for me, I think that with those four pedals I should be more than happy. Since I only play at home for fun I don't need to go too nuts buying pedals. In fact, I might even turn around and just keep three pedals and sell off whichever one I like the least. I was thinking of maybe putting together a small pedalboard and think that three drive pedals, a delay, and something else (no idea what yet) should be more than sufficient for my needs.

[br Yeah, get a voodoo power supply and build your own. I fell so far down the rabbit hole I bought a diamond plate trailer trash pedalboard. All I had to do was plug in the board, it was the largest pedal board that trailer trash was building at the time and I crammed every inch of it with pedals. Mostly boss and mxr, I wasn't into boutique pedals at the time. I think I had around ten pedals on it not including a wah and a volume pedal which were both on it. Yep, I was pedal sick at the time, if I wasn't shopping around for something else I would go into pedal withdrawals, just awful. The funny part is I only used 2 of the pedals at any given time. Some were there just to cover specific parts of songs as I was in a cover band at the time. Over the years I've tried various strobe tuners (korg, boss etc...) but found that the old boss analog tuners worked the best, at least for me. Just as a side note, I was using a phase 90 (mxr I think), it was an awesome pedal and I have tried a lot of phasers, if your ever interested in going that route give one a try. I also had a 1st generation ibanez tube screamer which was also a great pedal. I think that pedal has been reissued as it's replacement didn't work near as well. This was all before boutique pedals exploded onto the scene so now you have an even wider variety to check out.. If you fall to far into the darkness Colin let me know, I'll scare up a search team and pull you out.

I think I'm safe for now. A friend who works at my local guitar shop has said he would be happy to help me put together a small pedalboard whenever I decide to do so.
Other than three drive pedals and a delay I can't think of anything else to put on there. My amp has reverb so I am good on that front. I am also considering grabbing a Traynor YGM3 Reissue (a point to point reissue of their old amp and they even went back to the original transformer and grill cloth manufactures to get those made again...I had one briefly but wasn't using pedals and couldn't handle the volume when turned up for dirt, but now I would be using pedals for dirt) and those have both reverb and tremelo so both of those would be covered. I think a mini board with three or four decent drive pedals and a good delay should do me perfectly well for years to come.

It sort of smoothed things out and provided some natural compression at the same time. Food for thought. Keeping things down to three or four pedals is a great idea. There were times on stage that I wished I didn't have a clusterfuck of a pedal board in front of me. I was all the time hitting the wrong pedals, having cable problems and anything else that comes along with having to much stuff. Sometimes I left the pedal board at home and used my floor mount fender mustang. It's just another modeler but worked great in tight spaces. This thread brings back lots of memories.

My favorite dirt box is still the MXR Custom Badass 78 Distortion. Despite the stupid name.

I keep thinking about buying an EQ. ... Mostly just cause I'm too lazy to mod my Big Muff. I like the texture of the fuzz but the EQ is just too scooped. Pedals are an endless black hole. I actually can't let myself look at Electro Harmonix ads anymore. I'd buy everything they sell.

I don't need therapy dammit. Pedals are good. Well, pedals are good if your feeding an amp that already sounds good. If your amp sounds like shit, all the pedals in the world won't help.
I've bought and sold dozens of pedals over the years. If I don't like them I sell them. There are other pedal junkies out there who will pay good money for a pedal.

You guys are gone, no saving you now. You both are going to wind up asshole deep to a tall Indian in pedals and then you will start going in reverse and wind up back where you started. Your deep in the rabbit hole now, I'll go ahead and throw the dirt back in. Enjoy the ride. I was thinking about getting a boss super chorus for the wedding this weekend.............damn.

All my pedals burned up in a house fire a few years ago, along with my Marshall amp and cab and a few other things. At the time I kept unused gear in a storage facility so most of my guitars and a couple combo amps survive. I was so far down the rabbit hole at the time, if it wasn't for the fire I would have never come out. Hmmmmmmmmm, maybe your right, one little pedal won't hurt....

The pedal world has exploded since my playing days, there are so many. Boutique pedals have really come on over the past few years. I always had the boss, ibanez, mxr and never really experimented with much else with the exception of a Dunlop crybaby and an Ernie ball volume pedal. Of all the pedals I lost the Ernie ball volume hurt the most, I really loved that pedal. From what I've been told, some of the boutique pedals out there are way better then the big name pedals but that's just something I've heard. I guess it's just a matter of taste.

Like everything else, quality is a case by case issue. Some pedals by major manufacturers will be better, some pedals by boutique makers will be better.

Like everything else, quality is a case by case issue. Some pedals by major manufacturers will be better, some pedals by boutique makers will be better. Yeah, that's what I figured. I've never plugged into a boutique pedal of any kind. I am extremely familiar with boss pedals and there weaknesses. Boss overdrive and distortion pedals leave something to be desired in my opinion although I did use their metal zone pedal as an overdrive for a while. They make a great chorus, phaser, flange, delay, compressor and equalizer. I also used a little mxr stuff. Phase 90 and they also make a decent delay. Just as a note, boss makes a pretty decent multi effect pedal, great for those on a tight budget. I might even look at one of those as I really don't want to fill another pedal board. Next time I'm in a music store I might try a couple boutique pedals just for shits and giggles just to try and get an idea of what's out there. I will most likely go with a multi effects unit of some kind (not a modeler).
