Ok, I'm fifty three, only been a bedroom player up until 2 years ago. Started playing with a couple of guys (all guitars) and did a mini set of 7 songs last Xmas at a party/ mini fest , liked it, gained a sax and keyboard, did a small hour long gig in the summer at a party in a field. Anyway, we probably have a drummer as soon as he gets back from India in a couple of weeks and maybe a guesting female singer, so we are starting to prepare for a 30 minute slot at a party on 27th December. Sort of minifest like last year at our practice place with a bit longer to play in a secondary tent in the garden afterwards!! Then on the 7th Jan we are going to play at a local bar in Folkestone, here's our proposed set list:
two sets which last about 55 minutes each.
1st Set
Mrs Robinson Maid of the River - Levellers Come on - Levellers Karma Police - Radiohead The Day we Caught the Train - Ocean Colour Scene Where is My Mind - Pixies Here comes your man -Pixies Julie - Levellers The One I Love - REM Goodbye Girl - Squeeze Four Winds - Levellers Echo Beech - Martha and the Muffins + Zombie - Cranberries
2nd Set
Dosed-RHCP Golden Brown - Stranglers Times Like These - Foo Fighters The Man Who Sold the World - Bowie Stuck in the middle with you - Steelers Wheel Beautiful Day - Levellers Will You - Hazel O'Connor Up the Junction - Squeeze On Mercury - RHCP Annie get your gun - Squeeze Airport - The Motors Local Boy in the Photograph - Stereophonics +Duchess - Stranglers +Stay Free - Clash
What do you reckon? We have tried not to do the standard fare of covers and kept it indie/pop spread over several decades.

Is it a specific crowd you're playing for that you know likes that type of music?

Is it a specific crowd you're playing for that you know likes that type of music? Well we have fairly diverse taste, so we play stuff we like and that we feel will appeal to a fairly widespread group of differing ages. Most of it is fairly pacey and pretty well known (in the UK)but not what most cover bands churn out. The lady manager of the bar was very happy to have us because she thought our choice of music would be refreshing. ( besides we would probably be bringing most of the audience )

I like a setlist that's not overloaded with "bar band classics."

The biggest plus is HAVING a set list....
Did I just type that out loud?

The last band I was in the drummer/leader wrote the set list, and it was etched in stone. So, if it was a song I was starting, I'd switch it just to piss him off. Left him thinking for a minute. He was a dick.

i dont' recognize most of it. I have probably lived a sheltered life but if it's well paced, and people will recognize the tunes, but not think "oh shit not this song again" then it will be a huge success

I'd try to be careful with language. I'm not sure if folks from the forum provider look around forums too much. But, I wouldn't want someone wandering in here and give us a warning. I do know that this service is really strict about images. Mal, had a forum here, and told us that any nudity would get it shut down in a heartbeat, no questions asked.

Understood GT. Do let me know if you find out about language use. I think words like that should be allowed if they are not used in derogatory ways... if you get my drift. But I'll follow whatever you guys like in order to keep our little home here safe

Language doesn't really bother me. You should here the language used by the kids at my school. F**k is a noun, a verb, and an adjective for my students. Along with the N word, every other word. And, they're African American kids who use the N word all the time.
I think one of the reasons I've developed such a dislike for Rap is because of the language - N***** this, and that, and rapping about killing people. I absolutely hate the blatant misogyny. I'm so glad that Caleb got away from listening to that crap. He even went so far as to delete it all from his iTunes. I'd rather have him listening to Metal, than Rap. RANT over.

Levellers are a folk/indie band. Ocean Colour Scene are Brit Pop/indie Motors are New Wave I suspect they are the ones you don't recognise?

I kind of like the mix of songs and now we are rid of the main singer who was contributing nothing and just wasting our time we can really crack on! we also just got a bassist for our two Xmas gigs. He's just finishing touring in a local indie band called "The Native People" which is great for us in the short term:)

I saw The Motors a couple of times back in the late 70s at The Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino. Great band.

Well Colin, as the list is under review I suspect one of the songs you know has been cut tonight because it's not really one we like and we only did it for our recently disassociated singer. So out goes Stuck in the Middle with you and in coming Dog Train by the levellers

Do like Echo Beach. Reminds me of a time in 1980 ish. Never knew they were muffins... Here we go Sid. Only keyboards and two guitars so quite raw, we played a few songs for only the second time and I captured it by using GarageBand on an iPad placed in the middle of the room. Not good sound quality, but you get the idea unfortunately I left the metronome in the app going!! Just ignore it. :-S https%3A%2F%2Fsoundcloud.com%2Fgooner_1%2Fzombiehttps%3A%2F%2Fsoundcloud.com%2Fgooner_1%2Fairporthttps%3A%2F%2Fsoundcloud.com%2Fgooner_1%2Fstay-freehttps%3A%2F%2Fsoundcloud.com%2Fgooner_1%2Fon-mercuryAll very raw and needing polish.

Had a great session with the other guit player tonight. Now that the knobhead we had as a singer/3rd guitar is gone, we are achieving so much. It is surprising how much his turning up late/his gear in poor order and rarely bothering to practice or even listen to anything in his own time was holding us back. We have a couple of weeks off now and then we will have a practice which will include a young lady who will sing for us over the Xmas period.

I'm on same page as Colin - 4 songs for sure, 2 more maybe.
I'll listen the links when I can, but being in a working band, we do know the power of playing songs that aren't necessarily on the radar.
That said, there are people that come out to see us that request the same ol, same old.
