We can all learn from each other.
We play an amazing musical instrument. It's vertical, and horizontal. It looks simple, but it's very complex.

I'm a music theory moron, i don't have a clue what I do on the guitar. Yep, I know, that's pretty sad, you would think I would have learned something after all these years instead of completely relying on my ear. I have much to learn yet. Although i have not played any metal in almost 20 years you can still hear it in my playing. All the improvising I did on blues and rock covers was very aggressive and people would come up to me and say "you played metal didn't you". The very last cover band I was in believe it or not was country, it was very difficult for me in all aspects but I muddled through it. I will be keeping an eye on this thread.

i don't know Bill. the musical ear is the most important part of music. without it, one can have blinding fingers, perfect technique and have the creativity of a rock.
and Tommo, i'm sure you've got more than two bits. I might be able to find a quarter of musical knowledge somewhere. I'm sure between us we have a dollar lol

I was pretty good at pulling songs by ear. Now don't get me wrong, I didn't improvise everything but I took a few liberties here and there. I got to where I recognized the major and some minor chords listening. Since I don't have any theory on scales other then the pentatonic I recognized "patterns" in the playing which gave me a good start on copying songs. I regret not putting in more effort in that area.

i only barely "studied" guitar. i spent most of my time just improvising stuff. of course without a lot of different root sources for what i was improvising my playing can start to sound the same after a few songs.... but i guess htat's true of a lot of players and i'm told it's not necessarily a bad thing to be recognizable.
i can build chords. i just don't have much use for anything beyond a major, modal, or minor 7. i did chord inversions, in jazz, didn't much like it. my talents really lay in my writing :)i have a good vocab and can write about almost anything that pops in my head. had a half a song written bout taking about the garbage one day before i realized that it probably should be sent out with the rest of the garbage lol

We all know Friggsley's fan of Steven Seagal's magnificently bad guitar playing. He also likes Lil' Wayne's mad guitar "skillz".
