It's a done deal! The buyer just left here with the Fender Rumble 150 and the Gibson/Eminence cabinet and I've got 400.00 that I'm about to deposit in the bank. I just ordered the Hofner 459 and it'll be here Saturday, April 9th. The only glitch is that it doesn't come with a case...Maybe a gig bag, but not sure, and I wouldn't trust a set neck guitar with a tipped-back headstock to a gigbag....That's just asking for a Gibson-style tragedy. What I've discovered is that Hofner doesn't offer a case for the 459 (and the violin bass case doesn't fit the shorter neck of the six string guitar, and it appears to be an elusive item. When I bought my violin bass (from a dealer in London Ontario), they were able to get a rectangular Yorkville hardshell case to fit it. I ended up buying a shaped violin bass case on eBay (from the same dealer I just ordered the guitar from) and when it arrived, I used the shaped case for the bass, and used the rectangular hardshell case for my Jay Turser JT-G2 violin guitar. Unfortunately, I had to sell the Turser with that case because I was shipping it to Florida, so all I have now is the shaped case which won't fit the guitar. I'll have to try Long and McQuade, which is the Yorkville dealer now, and see if they have something that'll fit the new guitar. Can't seem to find any good full-size pictures online, but here's a teaser I snapped from the eBay ad.... Yay!

I did a heck of a lot of reading this afternoon, and was mildly troubled by multiple references of a neck-heavy attitude, and recommendations that a player should consider a nonslip strap. I don't remember balance being any problem with my JT-G2, which I'm guessing is a pretty similar, or maybe even identical item. I noted in the specs quoted by one seller that the thing only weighs five pounds, which sounds about what I remember the JT-G2 being. Being as how the semi-hollow body is for all intents and purposes the same as my bass, and the neck on the bass is a longer scale and heavier, I don't anticipate it being a problem.
Another review commented on the extreme range of the tone control which sounds appealing. The JT-G2, which used the same control panel as the violin basses, only had a single volume control, and the second control was an Artec QTP-1 Varitone which had three frequency filters plus a bypass position, so I'm expecting the Hofner to offer finer tone control.
I know the day I get it, I'll be switching the strap knobs over to Dunlop Straploks. These full hollow-bodies are way too fragile to survive being dropped. And those black speed knobs have to go.....I think I'll be ordering some Hofner teacup knobs from Allparts.

Both my Fender Thinline and my PRS Hollowbody are very lightweight (6lb 3oz and 6lb 1oz respectively) and are both susceptible to a little neck dive. I’ve got strap locks on both and suede backed straps. I can still feel the neck tugging a bit on my shirt but at least the guitar doesn’t move. If the new guitar has a maple or mahogany neck, it’ll tend to want to drop as it’s probably heavier than the body, especially once you add in the tuners and truss rod. If you plan on ordering the teacup knobs, make sure you figure out if the pots are imperial or metric and get the correct size. Here is a Yorkville case for a violin bass www.long-mcquade.com/12051/Guitars/Cases---Gig-Bags/Yorkville-Sound/Hardshell-Viola-Style-Electric-Bass-Case.htmWait until you see the actual gig bag. My son has a gig bag for his Taylor acoustic that totally protects the headstock. Some gig bags are pretty decent.

My son has a gig bag for his Taylor acoustic that totally protects the headstock. Some gig bags are pretty decent. Great find with that case, Rob. I recognize that as the same model that John Bellone Music in London, Ontario ordered for me for my violin bass. It works great for the violin guitars as well because the storage compartment is small enough that there's a lot of open space at the headstock end. I wish it was a little less money, but I'd rather have the right case than save a couple of bucks on something that only sorta fits and might damage the neck. I'm not even sure if Barry Clarke Music in Wisconsin, who's supplying my 459-SB gives people a gigbag with it....I went back over the ad and I don't think they do. (Fair enough, since their price is 50.00 cheaper than anybody else's)
I've been mulling over how to generate a bit more dough, and I think I have the answer. I have a vintage Fender bass case (mid to late 70's) that I could liquidate and that would probably pay for all or most of the Yorkville case from Long & McQuade. Just trying to figure out what to ask before I advertise it. I looked on eBay, and even those plastic POS Fender cases from the 80's are fetching 100.00 or more, so I think 100.00 would be more than fair for a vintage Fender G&G hardshell. What do you think?

A new G&G case is well over $300. A vintage one from the '70s should easily fetch at least $150 or more if it's not chewed up. Prices on eBay range from $150 to over $400 for vintage Fender cases.
I would also check on Reverb.

I appreciate the suggestion, Rob. I asked on TDPRI and the answer I got was a vintage case from that era might bring 250.00 if it's mint. I did some other checking online, and finally settled on a realistic-move it quickly ask of 150.00 firm. I also showed a few pictures of the case loaded with my 34" Telecaster bass, and mentioned that the bass was available for an extra hundred bucks if someone was interested. I'm getting lots of hits on the ad on Facebook Marketplace, so hopefully somebody will jump on it quickly.
I mentioned in the speaker/rabbit-hole thread that I'm keen to buy a Sound Source bass cabinet that I've found for sale used. It's got a 15" JBL in it that I'd love to transplant into my Ampeg PortaFlex cabinet, and then sell the Sound Source cabinet with the new 15" Eminence from the Ampeg at a reduced price. I think I see a way to put a 400.00 upgrade into my Ampeg box for 75.00 or less, but I need to liquidate this bass case to be able to afford it.

I've been thinking about my new Hofner that's coming and I'm like a kid before Christmas....I haven't bought a new off-the-rack guitar in well over ten years, so I'm really stoked. Realistically, I don't expect to get an Asian-made set-neck guitar that plays like a dream right out of the box, but I think I know just how good it can be with some expertise from somebody who's a real luthier, and not an FIYer like me. When I bought my Jay Turser JT-G2 years ago off eBay, the guy I bought it from was a pro and he set the thing up professionally before he shipped it. I think this Hofner I'm getting is a twin brother from a different mother and can be made to play really well. I just sent an email to the local luthier who did the refret and ZeroGlide nut installation on my Classic Vibe Duosonic with the vintage Fender neck about three years ago, knowing that he's trustworthy to do an exceptional job on the Hofner. I asked him for a quote on the job, and I'm hoping he'll treat me right on it, since I gave him my complete guitar parts inventory free a year ago when I had to give up my larger apartment in Maple Bay. I hope I'll hear back from him within a few days.

I just sold my 34" Tele and my Fender bass case, ironically to a guy who was a baby when my first wife and I lived next door to his parents. The buyer's also a friend of my oldest daughter....Small world. Anyway, I've got 250.00 in my pocket that was there yesterday, so I guess the next step is to contact the fellow in Victoria who's got the Sound Source cabinet.Chances are pretty good it'll be mine within a day or so. If that happens, I'll be swapping the 15" JBL from the Sound Source box into my Portaflex cabinet and reselling the Sound Source box cheap with the new 15" Eminence that used to live in my Ampeg.

Ahhh....Done like dinner! I made the deal on the Sound Source cabinet, just finished transferring him the payment by e-transfer, and I'm headed for Victoria Saturday morning to pick it up. So, I guess next week's project will be to cross-transplant the JBL into my Ampeg and the Eminence into the Sound Source box, and then do an ad to resell the Sound Source cabinet. I can hardly wait to play out somewhere so I can hear it at higher volume.
