Hi Guys,
I`m looking for pickup suggestions for a "s" style parts caster I just acquired.
I was hoping some of you guys would share an opinion on what gets the nod with players who know strats much better than I . It seems there are many really good pups to choose from, so i find it easy to get lost in the choices.
The body I have can accommodate a humbucker in the bridge position, and I thought that might be a fun option, but not necessarily the only choice I`m considering...
I`ve been playing acoustic for almost 5 years now, so i don`t know all that much when it comes to pickups and wiring configurations, but I can read a schematic and can commission anything, so suggestions for switching configs would be welcome also.
I will be using it for blues/rock. The only amp I have presently is a Traynor YCV-20WR.
Budget for the pups would be +$300, but under $400
Thanks in advance for any info that you have time to share...peace.

I'm not much of a pup modder. Two Strats that I had came with CS Texas Specials and SD HotRails. I liked the sound of both over the Strats that had stock. I'm sure that more informed people will add to this.

Hi Larry,
CS Texas Specials are on the short list already as they seem popular, and a little cheaper than boutique pups the last time I checked.
Thanks...

I have the Fender Custom Shop '54 strat pickups in mine- I really like them and I think they come in around $200. There are a lot of other Fender custom shop pickups to choose from.

For all I know it may be that some guys like boutique just because...while Fender may be the only place I need to look. I bought Lindy Fralin pups for the "t" style I built, but was hoping to access something in Canada this time so I could avoid border/customs charges. The Fender pickups you and Larry mention fit that requirement...and the price is nice. Thanks man...

I have Fralins in my Guild X-500- wonderful pickups, basically modeled to be somewhere between a Soapbar P90 and a vintage Franz that they used in the older Guilds. Probably not what you are looking for. My Jazzmaster has handwound Novaks which are also great pickups. I'd say Reilander as a great Canadian option, but I think he isn't in business anymore. I have one of his too.

There are only so many ways to wind a pickup. Wire goes on bobbin, magnet poles, and leads. The number of winds per turn and tightness of wind is the variable. IMHO and someone who winds his own pickups. You really can't go wrong with any of the big names out there. I would even suggest a set of GuitarFetish.. don't get the magnet that's glued on the bottom of the bobbins, get the magnet pole pieces. I like Seymour Duncans Hotrails and SSL-1's. www.guitarfetish.com/1963-Stratreg-Texas-Wound-Professional-Series-Pickups_p_2094.html
For Humbuckers..
I like Seth Lovers and DiMarzio 100th Anniversary.

Thanks for the info Sinister...

Yes for sure...
It`s going to be a difficult choice, due to lack of experience on my part .
I`ve looked at the Seymour Duncan`s already...probably can`t go wrong with any of the suggestions on this page.
I guess my wallet will to have to compensate for my lack of experience once again.
Should be fun.

On my hard tail Strat partscaster, I put the Seymour Duncan SSL-1s on there with a RWRP middle pickup. Good classic Strat sound. For Canadian pickup builders, I used The Pickup Wizard to rebuild the pickups on my ‘75/Tele and he did an awesome job. I believe his name is Peter and his pickups get a lot of love over on the Offset Guitar forum. I think he’s located around Peterborough, Ontario. www.pickupwizard.com/Unfortunately, it looks like he’s temporarily closed due to the pandemic. However, you can email him as his email is on the home page. Maybe he’s opening soon.

If I were doing replacing pickups in a Strat I would consider a rail type or a Lace Alumitone.
But I'd check all the stuff above as well.
But first I'd need a Strat

I have only changed pickups in a guitar once when I put some P90s in a PRS Singlecut. Obviously making up a guitar is different. We have a great maker over here called Bareknuckle Not sure if they're available in the 'colonies' I met the MD Tim Mills once at a guitar show, where he was demonstrating his pickups in Strats & Teles. He's a nice bloke and great guitarist. I do have a set of his PG (Peter Green) Blues in a Les Paul. They were already in it when I bought the guitar. Sound great to me.

That is a manufacturer that I came across when picking pickups for my tele partscaster. I had forgotten about them, thanks for the reminder. At almost 400.00CAD before tax and shipping they are the most expensive set I have looked at so far. I like the resistance numbers for this set www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/pickup/strat/irish-tour-single-coil

/steps up onto soap box We as humans are so easily manipulated and influenced by the power of suggestion and that's all this got to pay top dollar for gotta have vintage starts. You get what you pay for is a salesmen tactic.. they want to pay more out of pocket so it's more money in theirs. Of course sometimes this holds true in some cases.
Here's a video on Audio Myths which is a bit interesting if you're into this thing. The first 20 minutes is the gist of it.

A good article...I remember learning all this when I was apprenticing to become an electrician. As the article mentions, DCR it is a way of getting a rough idea of the range that the pickup will operate in, when it`s installed. Still, I will have to assume that heat has an equal effect on different pickups regardless of wire diameter and coatings...until I find out otherwise. I don`t have the opportunity to listen to alot of different pickups in person, and even with a good sound system, which I have, internet sound bites could be deceiving, so personal opinions from people of experience like yourself, along with DCR values for a rough idea, is all I got at this point.

Completely agree- any one of these choices would give a very satisfactory tone.

Tone Emporium will be the inexpensive way to go. Will you be satisfied mentally since it's not a big name or most likely made overseas? Some people do get hung up on that and there isn't anything wrong with that.
I apologize if i seem a little preachy.... I just don't like to seeing others making up decision with little information. Plus I'm horrible trying to get my thoughts across correctly without sounding like a downer.

Yes...Tone Emporium for savings and buying Canadian, and for all intended purposes should be all I really need. Seymour Duncan because of the comments I was repeatedly reading on another forum...and your suggestion as well. Also middle price point for my list. Lace for their technology. If I want noise canceling single coils that company has a good rep. What do you think of these..? lacemusic.com/collections/7/products/lace-sensor-dually-purple-emerald-humbucker?variant=12851958317129 Too gimmicky? For me, in my world of little experience, these look like aot of value, but with that said, are they more novelty than anything else, will i give something up to get more options? Usually I`m a bit more minimalist/purist, but those pups are stuck in my mind as an option. As far as being preachy, no worries. I have a room full of soapboxes myself. I welcome your opinion, and I get where you`re coming from with consumer influence and popular branding. You haven`t been a downer. You`re talking with a guy who isn`t afraid or intimidated by critical thinking. It`s getting rare, I welcome it.

I've never dealt with lace sensor pickups. From what I've read that they have a smaller magnetic field and weaker magnetic pull. Which you will have to have the pickups closer to the string.

From the Lace page...starting point for height adjustment "String distance from the pickup, fretted at 21st fret: High “E”: -NECK: 1.5mm -MID: 2.0mm -BRIDGE: 1.0mm String distance from the pickup, fretted at 21st fret: Low “E”: -Neck: 2.5mm -Mid: 3.5mm -Bridge: 2.0mm"I got 1/8"th and 1/16" from Lindy Fralin website as their suggested starting point...1/8"th = 3.175mm, 1/16"th = 1.5875mm There is quite a bit of difference on the low "E". This might get sticky if there is an issue with string/pole alignment over any of the three pickups. Thanks for pointing that bit out.

I fully agree with you on both points. I had Lace Sensors on my Tele for a few years. Nice quiet pickups (no hum) but they sounded a bit sterile…just very clean. But then again, back in the ‘90s, Eric Clapton was using Lace Sensor Golds in his Strat and he sounded great when I saw him back then. I really like the Seymour Duncan SSL-1s that I put in my hard tail partscaster. Just great classic Strat tone.
