5300 steps today, even though we were riding in carts on the golf course. Apparently, they had almost 2 inches of rain in Niagara last evening and the course had lots of standing water so we were relegated to cart paths only.

You guys walk way more than i do. I’m lucky to get between 4,000-5,000 a day as my Achilles’ tendons don’t like the strain.

I played squash up until a couple years ago but sometimes I have trouble with my shoulder which makes it all but impossible to play. Of course the pandemic also made it impossible to play because the courts near us were shut for over a year.

You guys walk way more than i do. I’m lucky to get between 4,000-5,000 a day as my Achilles’ tendons don’t like the strain. I came close to snapping my right Achilles back in 1987, when I was in the RAF and attending the annual Rifle Championships, held at Bisley.
I damaged my Achilles tendon when taking part in a competition known as the Queen Mary. This involved firing a self-loading rifle (SLR) in various positions from 500 yards to 100 yards distance. Basically you fired a couple of shots at the target, then had to run 100 yards to the next distance and fire a couple more shots in a different position, until you reached the last 100 yard firing point. All of this in a fixed timescale of, I seem to remember, a minute for each 100 yard distance, whilst dressed in full camouflage uniform and military boots.
I did fairly well, managing to get into the second round. I also beat a young chap next to me, who was in the RAF Regiment. I always remember his officer telling him off for being beat by an old man; I was 41.
The next day, I woke up in the tent and could hardly walk. I certainly couldn’t put my right boot on. I managed to limp to the medical tent and was told by an RAF Squadron Leader that I had come close to snapping my Achilles. He gave me some painkillers and also an excused boots note. He didn’t send me home though, so I was allowed to compete in the competitions that didn’t involve running.
I still have the occasional issue with my right Achilles, usually if I do any running, although it can ache when just walking. I just accept and live with the pain.
Pic is me on the front left grimacing as I had to put boots on for the 'official' pic

I’m not sure how I injured both of mine. It seems to have happened after I had participated in a few different things over a one month period. We had a team building day at work that involved foot racing and climbing. Around the same time I started riding my mountain bike along some of the trails around here. Shortly after doing this I started feeling pain in my ankles when I’d get out of bed and to this day, I need a few minutes of movement to loosen them up. It’s worse after I do a lot of walking or strenuous work that requires use of my feet such as digging with a shovel etc. Then I pay for it for a few days.
Ive had tendinitis in my elbow and received a cortisone shot to stop the pain and it worked. However, I was told that the Achilles’ tendon will rupture if injected with cortisone. However, the doctor tried to inject the cortisone into one of my heels to see if that would help and it did for about a month but I’m back to square one now. When I golf, I tend to ride a golf cart but I try to walk a bit while I’m out there . The walking isn’t so bad until I come to an elevated green or elevated tee and the uphill walk stretches the tendons. Again I’m fine while doing it but once I sit and rest for a little while, they stiffen right up. I’ve tried physiotherapy, CBD, analgesic creams, ice etc but nothing has helped so now I just live with it.

Nowadays I tend to wear an elastic bandage with a liberal application of Voltarol, when it hurts. I have managed to run London Marathon 5 times and New York Marathon once, along with numerous half marathons, all since I did it in 87. When I did a lot of running, I used to do around 80-100 miles a week in training and I think that helped a lot. I used to do a lot of stretching as well, mainly the back of my legs. With walking it’s slightly different, but still find the more I do the better it is. Did around 4.5 miles this morning without too much of a problem, but will probably wear the elastic bandage later. So I suppose like you, I just live with it.

I think you are going to have me beaten by a wide margin with 11,000 steps today. We were pretty stationary so I have less than a grand in at midday.

So I suppose like you, I just live with it. Unfortunately John I can’t use any of those creams as they aren’t recommended if one has an aspirin allergy. I can only use the creams or gels with menthol or eucalyptus in them. I tried CBD only because everything else either didn’t work or I couldn’t take them due to a reaction. I also tried taking turmeric which is supposed to alleviate inflammation….nothing worked! One of the exercises that therapist gave me was to stand on a step with only the balls of my feet on the step with my heels hanging off. Then I was to lower the heels to stretch the tendon and hold it there for a short period of time. This just seemed to aggravate the injury even more. Last summer, I tried doing some walking, mostly on level ground and they didn’t didn’t bother me too much. Then I’d go golfing or do so strenuous work where my Achilles would be stretched and I was back to square one. Even this past winter, I pulled out the treadmill and started using it a few times a week. However, even at its neutral setting, it still has a slight incline which stretches the tendon. If I was a horse, they would have shot me by now. This getting old sh!t ain’t for sissies!

We had to call my son to pick us up because we were concerned about the lightning We got caught in a major thunderstorm tonight when we went to visit my wife’s uncle who has just been put into a hospice for his remaining time on earth. We are not allowed inside so we had to stand outside his window to speak with him. About 10 minutes after getting there the skies opened up and we had to take refuge in a nearby gazebo for about 15 minutes until it all passed. Quite an amazing light show. didn’t keep track of my steps today as I wasn’t carrying my phon but I don’t think it would have been more than 3000

It is just a round number and a fair gauge of how much activity I've done. My rough guideline is this: <2k means I basically didn't leave the house all day ~5-7k means I went on a few short walks ~10-12k means I went on at least one pretty long walk and probably some short walks too ~15-20k (which is rare) means I really walked a lot- like walking around NYC all day long, which I haven't done in a very long time
