Many, many years ago I could play clarinet, trombone, and guitar from charts. After years of only playing guitar I have mostly lost the skill. I can get through a chart but depending how hard it is it may take take a lot of tries before I can play it at tempo. Guitar seems more about patterns on the fret board than notes. I find it easier to figure the chart on a keyboard then transfer that to guitar. Keys seem more note oriented than pattern.

I have helped keyboard players understand stuff from a guitar player perspective, and the other way around. I know how to read music & where the notes are on a keyboard--although, as I have mentioned--you likely wouldn't want me playing keys in your band.

There is no way I can play keys at speed. I find going through a chart on a keyboard helps me visualize it on a guitar. No idea how or why but it works for me.

Although rarely play keyboards anymore (Haven't had one around at home for a long time--although that is on my mental gear to get list), I find some things easier to think about on a keyboard, some on a fingerboard.
